Re: Doubling up on Recruitment agencies

I think it depends on the scope of your search. If you have a list of schools that aren't covered by ISS and GRC, you can regularly check those schools to see if they have vacancies and most-likely apply directly.

If you're looking to do the broadest possible search, you may want to sign up with Search - although that's what I might have done in the first place if I was looking to do a very wide search.

On the other hand (I realize I'm growing extra hands here) if you've already been a Search candidate and you have some excellent recommendations already on file that might be added along with some of your current ones, then it might make sense to sign up with them.

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

Expatscot: The January fair can also be for single teachers if Search decides that you're a competitive candidate. Asking never hurts.

Completely agree with everything Spedguy said. Select the fair that has the schools that interest you the most. Would also add that on the whole a larger fair (Bangkok, London, Cambridge) can work to your advantage as you may find other schools that you weren't previously considering become worth your time.

Re: Career changers, if you could do it again...

One possibility that has already been mentioned to some extent here is to stay on the domestic end, and work in a district where you can both get a provisional license and work towards certification at the same time.

Districts with substantial teacher shortages will sometimes allow this although there may be benchmarks along the way (so many hours towards certification/master's, passing PRAXIS). If you do this, you are both building your resume and getting certified at the same time.

Many of the districts that may offer such an option may have challenging student populations, but if you can find some high quality veteran teachers as mentors or certification supervisors you will probably learn a lot that will help when you switch to international teaching. You might also find the switch to be easier. Good teachers at challenging schools can be valuable role models.

It may not work out logistically or in terms of what you want and will probably involve a pay cut, but it's an option to consider.

Re: May 2019 IB Results

Sorry I wasn't clearer. What I meant was that out of all subjects, each year there often seem to be two that have grading that's hard to figure out but it's not consistently the same subjects year to year. I haven't seen any pattern of a record of off-kilter grading for a specific subject but neither have I looked for one.

This year for us was an exception in that we did not see it, but it may not be so for other schools. Again, sorry for the confusion.

Re: May 2019 IB Results

Ours are unusually consistent, but one set of results doesn't demonstrate much of anything.

Over the years I've found there are usually a couple of subjects where grading seems to be peculiar, and given valid feedback there's sometimes some widening of the grade boundaries if re-grading seems warranted - although in the best-case scenario that feedback has been provided prior to grades being released. As far as I can see, nothing is certain.

Every year seems to be different. I feel for you if students and teachers are feeling things are looking weird. Thhat's hard for everyone and I don't know of any quick fix to make people feel better.

Re: Marketability and dogs

So in other words, instead of providing the data you repeatedly state you stand by you're going to be intransigent? I don't understand how someone who states they believe so much in data has their reactions derailed by emotion to the extent you do. It's confusing

Re: Marketability and dogs

Then what I don't understand is that when asked a direct question about your recruiting experience in relation to the advice you give (when you state you have recruiting experience), you get upset rather than asking the question. I would hope that you'd take a few breaths and explain how your experience as a recruiter backs up your points system to help it make greater sense for those who might use it.

Re: Marketability and dogs

Overall I think we're looking at a poster who feels deeply hurt and wounded by working at international schools due to past experience, and is perhaps working through what he may feel is a traumatic experience by developing his own understanding of how things work. The problem is that the level of misinformation makes him something of the Alex Jones of this forum and I need to remind myself to have some sympathy and pity for the individual while still correcting his factual errors.

Re: Marketability and dogs

Actually, my point is that a candidate can be quite successful in finding a position without racking up the points you posit in your system. It's also possible that someone could have many of the points you create, but still find themselves having less of a hiring experience than they hoped. No smoke and mirrors and mystery - just finding the right person based on the year and the priorities of both the school and the candidates.

I seem to have hit a nerve. Perhaps it's best to move on.

Point well taken. International education is the least regulated education system out there and there is a good deal of misinformation. Sadly, a great deal of it comes from the person who posts the greatest amount in this forum. As long as you are willing to accept that it's a nuanced process and you vet schools carefully when you apply you should be fine.

It's not a matter of mysticism. It's more an understanding that there are many more moving parts in recruiting and hiring than your system allows, as well as qualitative data, and purely subjective opinions.

Your data isn't the only thing that matters, and it's just not possible to reduce hiring (and lots of other things) to a mechanistic view or formula if you want to do so successfully. And if the statement "data is the only thing that matters," then the definition of data needs to be substantially expanded to include non-quantifiable information and allow for uncertainty and extremely wide interpretation - something that your reductive approach doesn't seem to want to allow.

So let's get some data:
1. Do you currently recruit teachers for international schools, or have you done so for at least three years in the past five? (And I mean recruiting on a school/division-wide basis, not just vetting or giving an opinion on a departmental candidate).

2. If the answer to the first question is positive, did you exclusively rely upon your system to hire?

3. If the answer to the second question is positive, how did it work out?

Re: Marketability and dogs

"Right its all magic. They dont need to speak in those terms they just have to come down to those terms.
We disagree."

It's not that we disagree. It's that you are simply wrong here. It rarely comes down to the terms you assert. Since you don't have much/any experience recruiting and since at least one of your hiring fair experiences was not registering but trying to interview on the periphery, I don't think you have a solid understanding of the hiring process.

What's more, I think that repeatedly posting your point system does a strong disservice to those looking for positions if they accept what you say. It's not helpful for candidates, for recruiters and ultimately for students. If you are going to store posts to cut and paste, they should at least be a fair representation of the topic at hand. At the very least, you should include a disclaimer that you are not and have not been an active recruiter. At the best, you would not attempt to speak ex cathedra about something you don't know.

You will likely post something to the effect of "We disagree" to keep your post percentage high, but that in itself is a symptom that what you post here is more driven by a desire to be the most frequent poster rather than someone who is willing to authentically engage in dialogue and is willing to admit that sometimes they don't know. And that's counterproductive, to put it maybe too politely.
