I have lived here (QATAR) 3 years. Save 40+ each year.

Clubs and bars are very expensive... (beer=10 bucks)

Groceries are cheaper than the USA. Gas is a dollar a gallon. Tons of free athletic events.

My housing is free from our school. Our school pays 75% of electric and water bill.

We are very happy here!

I am a current teacher here at ASD. A couple quick points.

1) All teacher filled out a "what are you doing next year" survey. Even the "maybes" jobs were listed as openings. I would bet half those teachers are staying.

2) Our new directer Dr. Welsh is doing an awesome job! She is well liked and we have a long waiting list of students wishing to get in.

3) Qatar is a fun place to live and teach. Our staff housing is great! The kids we teach are awesome! Our buildings are fantastic! I will probably teach here for at least 4 more years!

and we don't have MYP!!

I worked with a guy who was covered from shoulder to arm. Played in a ska-puck band in the 90's. GREAT teacher and it hasn't slowed him down. I have a couple tats on the shoulders.. had to cover them up in the hot baths of Japan 20 years ago!!

Keep em covered during the interviews... once you get the job, let em fly!

Been overseas 20 years. All 5 schools have been "fun"

But the most fun was in Poland and, now in Qatar! We even had some great times in Kuwait after the Gulf War! Finding AK's in the sand!

The trips, the teaching, the lifestyle! It's all good!

PS- Stay away from "for profit schools" and schools with 50%+ locals!!

We have been in Qatar for almost 2 years, but we are at one of the "better" schools.

We LOVE Qatar. Safe, tons of things to do, great place for kids! sporting events!

Our single friends struggle. Expensive hotel bars, not many single women, boring. There are a lot of poor workers from Nepal (etc).... And it is HOT in the summer!

Modern English School is a FOR profit school with lots of local kids. I don't know anyone who teaches there but it is one of many for-profit schools that bring in a lot of teachers who end up frustrated over pay, bad kids etc.. If you are young or new to teaching overseas this may be an OK place to start your career. Can you do two years at a so-so school?? Do you need all the comforts of home?

We have been teaching overseas for 18 years! And all in all its been great!

Good luck!!

There are a few international schools: The American School, Qatar Academy, Doha College. All good schools!!

The rest mostly are for profit and lots of locals. Tons of expats here.... so lots of schools opening.

We love Doha! Tons of sporting events! Great weather! Lots of stuff for our kids!! The single teachers feel like its too "boring"

Hope this helps!

the argument that MYP isn't that great, and not well liked and not doing a very good job of teaching children.

My argument seems to have picked up a bit of steam...... I'm not the only one in my boat. Perhaps my tired old comments are felt by the majority of teachers in international schools.

No particular order:

American School of Doha
American School of Dubai
American Community School of Abu Dhabi
TAISM Oman
KAUST (take the money and run)
ARAMCO (same)
Cario American College
Tel Aviv
Jordan

I personaly wouldn't go to Saudi, nor would I go to an IB school.

To each his own.....
