I live in Southeast Asia. I did my B.Ed. in Vancouver knowing full well I wasnt going to get a job somewhere I actually wanted to live. Our plan was to move overseas from the start. We left the year after my wife got her B.Ed. That was a few years ago now.

Stop reading psyguys post and start searching for UK Gov website advice. It's all there online and if you cant find it (meaning you would prefer someone to deal with it)

If I was told I had to go through an elongated and lengthy process (two years in my case) to get a BC teaching certificate and at the end of it I would get to roll a hundred sided dice and I only get a job (any job, including subbing) if I roll a 1, I'd probably give it a miss. Actually, that's pretty much what I did, and I got the sub job. But i was a permanent resident at that point. If you don't have residency the dice is 10,000 sided and probably more. Now, if I was a betting man..........

Difficult to say without details, but generally the answer is no. It might be a bit more complicated for the first few months when you arrive (August to December). I'm quite sure is info is available on line on .Gov websites.

Having gone through the process of converting a UK 3 year degree to a Canadian 4 year degree and then doing my B.Ed. in BC, knowing that I'd have to be incredibly lucky to get even a subbing job ( fortunately I was one of the chosen few), I would not advise anyone to do the same, unless your plan is to teach overseas. And I was a permanent resident as the time.

Bangkok went well for us. We got eight interviews during sign up and probably could have got more. We got offers from one of our two top choices, so very happy. We had previously applied to most of those schools and heard nothing. It all happened at the sign up. This was our first fair. Hard work, but it did the job. Neither of us teaches a shortage subject.

Surely you'd also get a government/provincial pension as well, which would give you over CAD$3000 a month. If this was me I'd be looking to Asia for a school where you could save and invest a substantial amount of savings. You already have two solid pensions, I'd be looking at saving a substantial sum and investing it offshore. Your situation is not disimilar from mine (although I have a family) and that's what I'm doing. Read Andrew Hallam's book , "Million.aire Expat." It might help you clarify where you can go to get you where you want to be.

Thinking about applying to a couple of schools. Thoughts on which one is better for a family of 4 mostly based on lifestyle?

I guess I'm just wondering who gets paid in these circumstances, Schrole or Search?

I was thinking the school might find the situation complicated and prefer to hire a Schrole candidate at an ISS fair or a Search candidate at a Search fair.

I just applied for a job through Schrole, not thinking I should really have applied through Search. I mentioned that I would be attending the Bangkok Search fair.

I can definitely agree with fine dude on point 1, but ultimately we're thinking of moving on because our kids are getting older and we live in a small town with no public transport. Time to get back to the big smoke. This is the first school we will have left because of personal circumstances. We love the area and for the most part the school. The first first we worked at we left because of crazy students, the second we left because of crazy admin. This school? Life has just moved on and we need a change.
