Re: Recruitment Season

Prime time depends upon the position. The top tier schools in Asia are well into their hiring for hard to fill positions. Most of them will be done by early January, then often finish up at the Bangkok fairs. The 2nd tier schools are on a more traditional schedule, January and February.

Given the European labor laws, the European schools tend to be a bit later with the top ones trying to finish up in January, but they will also have openings later as their own teachers find jobs during the recruiting season.

Re: Search Stats

Psyguy,

The number of 5,200 was the exact number of candidates whose files are active in Search as of yesterday. Recruiters can access that number. Yes, it does not include those who have taken a position or those who have started a file, but it is not active yet. I provided the number only to give the members of the forum a sense of the active members.

How do you know the SA stats include teachers who renewed their contracts. What is your source? Also, what is your source for the success rate of SA and ISS? Is it published somewhere?

Re: Package Negotiations

br12,

I do not know many schools that will provide extra compensation to single teachers in lieu of the free tuition. The reason is for many schools allowing a teacher's child to attend free does not cost the school much if anything where as an extra flight home would be a real expense.

Re: Package Negotiations

Splendid,

I neglected to address the first part of your question, what would be your top 10 package/salary requirements?

Here are mine in relative order. I am sure different people may put them in a different order.

1. Regionally competitive salary as measured by ability to save
2. At least 10% for retirement either matched or paid directly
3. Quality housing relatively close to school.
4. Free tuition for all children
5. High quality health care that covers you in country and in your home country
6. Annual flights home for you and all dependents
7. Professional development allowance between $1,500 to $2,500 annually that can roll over to a second year if unused
8. Longevity or resigning bonus for year 3 and beyond
9. Wellness allowance to help offset out of pocket costs related to health care plan or to be used for health club membership, sporting equipment, etc.
10. Utility allowance if not covered by housing.

Most top tier schools outside of Western Europe provide many if not all of the above.

Re: Package Negotiations

I have work at five international schools, two of them would be considered elite or tier 1 schools, and none of them allowed negotiation on salary or housing. Good luck if you can get extra, but do not be disappointed if they tell you the compensation is fixed.

Re: SA Job Fair Questions and chances for employement?

PsyGuy,

I have taken issue with some of your posts in the past, but to be fair, I should also commend your quality posts. This is one of the most comprehensive pictures of a recruiting fair that I have seen. I may not agree with a couple of your conclusions, overall it is very accurate. Thanks for sharing with the newbies.

Re: Search Stats

As of today, there are 5,224 candidates registered with Search. I have never seen any published annual statistics down to the level you are suggesting. At the end of each recruiting season they can tell you how many people have been placed, but to my knowledge they do not break it down by curriculum of the school or how many applications they have per position. It would be a significant amount of work.

I have a vague memory of receiving an email saying they had placed about 10,000 candidates last year, but I cannot find it.

Re: Global Recruitment Collaborative, Dubai Fair

Just came back from the fair as a recruiter. The candidate pool was very strong as they were all veteran overseas teachers who had worked at some good to great schools. Singapore American School, Zurich International School, International School of Beijing, American School of Dubai were the top schools represented. There were about 40 schools in total most from the Middle East, but many from Asia, some from Europe and Africa. 375 candidates were in attendance.

The timing of the fair worked well. There were a number of teachers who had a chance to interview before having to decide if they wanted to return to their current school. Although some schools could not offer contracts because they have not passed their budgets for next year so some positions were tentative. A number of schools at the fair indicated that their enrolments are declining and could reduce the number of positions available this year.

With luck I will close the deal with four teachers I met at the fair and other schools were hiring two to four people as well.

The plan is to make this an annual fair. The price is right as there is no fee to register or attend the fair. Also, the reference is very easy. You put in the email address of your director and they are sent an email, with a one question reference.

The database is still up and running, so candidates can still register.

Re: Early season interviews/offers

The recruiting season is well underway. What used to occur from December to February now is October to April. There is now a recruiting fair in November.

I expect to offer contracts to a couple for next year this week.

I would encourage you to contact the other schools once you have a firm offer from the first one. I would not contact them and say I have interviews with other schools will you interview me.

The variable is whether the schools have definite openings at this point or tentative ones. Some schools begin interviewing if a current teacher has said they are probably/possibly leaving, but cannot offer until the current teacher resigns.

Re: Global Recruitment Collaborative, Dubai Fair

Can only speak for my school, but I will be there with contracts looking to sign high quality teachers.

The fair was actually started for schools who value face to face interactions with candidates. There are over 40 schools signed up to attend and over 100 candidates already. Looking forward to the experience.

Re: Visa Question

The visa is issued by public security, however they have to be authorised by a different government ministry. For some schools, it is the ministry of education and for others it is the foreign ministry. The ministries have different offices in different parts of the country and when I was there, the offices applied the rules differently.

At my school, we could not get a visa for a teacher turning 65 and a school in another part of the country hired the teacher.

Re: Visa Question

Psyguy,

Have you worked in China and been responsible for getting staff visas? I have. My school had to go through one ministry and other schools in the same city as well as other schools in different cities when through a different ministry. It all depends upon how the school was founded.

I doubt you know the inner workings of every single school in China and how they get their visas enough to make such a declaration.

Re: Visa Question

b12,

The schools in China get the visa from different government agencies and the rules can vary region to region. At one time, the age limit for Shanghai was 65, but in Beijing it was 70. There is no one system. Additionally, the Chinese government has recently increased the requirements. The school I used to work for did indeed go from 2 years requirement to five. In many cases, it is the government requirement and the school does not have any wiggle room.

I agree with Sid, it never hurts to apply.

Re: Schools, locations for non-married teaching couples?

One thing to consider is that you will mostly liked be hired as couple as opposed to two individual contracts. One impact is if a problem arises in the contract and one person leaves, the other person may not have a position as well. One school had a practice of come as a couple, leave as a couple.

Re: Aquatics Directors

Few schools have this position. They are generally larger schools in Asia or Europe. Given the limited number of positions, the people tend to stay in place for a long time. As you noted, when there is an opening, there will be a limited pool of candidates.

The Aquatics Directors I have known are generally certified PE teachers with extensive experience as a swim coach.
