Re: GRC

Does anyone know anything about the GRC fair in November? I've indicated to them that I'm going, and the fair is listed on my profile, but I've gotten no information about the time, platform, or the schools attending. Just wondering if I'm missing something.

Re: Lesson demos

I will not burn the midnight oil, then, and get a lesson demo ready for this week's job fair. I'll just prepare myself to talk about what I do in a typical lesson.

Thank you!

Lesson demos

The ISS-Schrole virtual fair next week will be my first ever job fair, and I'm starting to get nervous!

I'm wondering if schools expect you to prepare a 10-15 minute lesson demo as part of the interview process? Should I have a lesson or two ready to go, or will it be okay to send them a link to a quick lesson I've uploaded to YouTube? Not sure yet how I'm going to present a lesson virtually, especially if I can't share my screen!

How do you get to work?

Just wondering how people commute to work...train? Bus? Bike? Walking? Or do many people have a car? My husband and I were initially under the impression that we wouldn't need a car in Asia, and we're hoping not to get a car to save on expenses, but I'm finding that some schools aren't really within walking distance of public transportation...

Re: Salaries in Bangkok

Thank you; that is useful information to have ahead of the job fairs!

If anyone else knows something different, chime in. :)

Salaries in Bangkok

I am wondering what an average/typical salary is for an international school teacher in Bangkok? And is it more typical to be provided free housing or to be given a housing allowance?

FWIW, I have a Master's degree and over a decade of domestic experience.

GRC

I had not heard of GRC (Global Recruitment Collaborative) until this month. Does anyone have experience with this site/company? Has anyone connected with schools and gotten a job through them?

I am about to register with them - it's free, after all - but I'm wondering if they will immediately contact my references when I do? Their FAQ makes it sound like they send a confidential reference form to references as soon as you register, but I haven't told my current principal that I'm job hunting yet (she's got enough on her plate with COVID stuff), so I'm thinking I need to keep her off my reference list, then, for the time being...?

Re: Thoughts on Search Online Fairs

By "putting out feelers," do you mean sending out resumes/cover letters despite no job advertised? Is that a recommended thing to do?

Re: ISS Fairs

Okay, thank you, PsyGuy. There are about 20 schools on my list (about half) that are NOT with ISS, so I'll plan to check their employment pages regularly starting mid-October, I suppose? Maybe November?

My worry is that there will be a few schools that won't let you apply directly and will make you apply only through ISS or Search, so if they're not on ISS, I'd be out of luck. But hopefully, that won't be a common occurrence.

Re: ISS Fairs

So will a lot of schools, whether they're on ISS or Search or not, be recruiting and interviewing independently this year, do you think?

I am registered with ISS, but quite a few of the schools I have my eye on are NOT with ISS. (Some are with Search, but I am not registered with them and don't know if it's worth it, considering I'm only focusing on 5-7 countries, or rather, one continent.) So am I just supposed to keep checking the schools' websites and applying directly, if I can? That's a lot of work, but I'll do what I have to do...

I already clarified last year. My license definitely expires in 2023, even though it says 2022. I'll have to call the department of education to see if they can "fix" it on my license. Good news that it shouldn't cause me trouble in terms of getting hired, though!

License and renewal

My current teaching license (in the US) states that it expires in June 2022. However, all educators in my state were given an automatic 1-year extension, which is noted on my state's department of education web site but which is NOT reflected in the PDF of the license. Will a potential school pass me over because it appears - falsely - that my license expires halfway through an initial contract, or is this just something I can explain at an interview?

Also, how does everyone renew their US (or British, or Australian, etc.) teaching license while overseas? I know my first time will be straightforward, because I'll submit all the clock hours I need before I move overseas and all that will be left is to pay the renewal fee when the time comes. But after that, when I won't have any clock hours in the US...?

Re: Quick resume questions

Oh - acronyms. My position is "ESL teacher" in the US, and my licensure is "K-12 ESL," but some international schools use the descriptor "EAL teacher." So I assume I should keep my licensure to read "ESL" but change my position title to "EAL Teacher" for those schools using that wording?

When I write my position at the top of the resume, do I capitalize teacher in "EAL Teacher" or leave it lowercase? And is it okay to say it that way, or do I have to write out "English as an Additional Language Teacher?"

So many little things to worry about...

Re: Quick resume questions

Thought of a couple more quick questions.

1) Do I need to include my full address on both the resume and cover letter, or is my city/state/country sufficient?
2) On the resume, is it better to start with my licensure or with my teaching experience?

Re: Quick resume questions

Thank you, shadowjack!

Yes, I have already spent many, many hours this summer crafting good cover letters for my top 10-12 schools. So much work (when I'm supposed to be relaxing!), but I hope it will pay off!
