Re: Admins Out There

TBH as a small school we are in an unprecedented position and are not even sure we need to recruit this year. I'm flummoxed, to be honest!

Re: Competitiveness in the Market

Pods are where student groups stay the same and have one teacher for Lang and Lit and I & S and another for Maths and Science, with lots of interdisciplinary stuff going on. At an IB school sometimes the third pod is Design and Art, with PE and Languages being the specialists in the group.

Re: Requesting criticism on my plan to become qualified/competitive.

Skip the PGCEi, get certified in English, get to a smallish IB school, stick around, and teach ITGS. If you can teach programming, start a programming club, a tech club, a robotics club if the school has equipment and there is none. If these exist, volunteer to help out. Hang out with the technology...

Re: Requesting criticism on my plan to become qualified/competitive.

Mencoh, the world still needs tech teachers and good, experienced ones are gems. Pursue your English but keep on developing your tech skills. Move laterally to things such as yearbook class, journalism, integrate technology in story telling, and then keep pushing the envelope. I know people with NO ...

Re: Reference requests

This is one reason why people sign up with an agency and stick with it - everything stays on file. If you've been with Search for 15 years over 4 positions, you have sets of parent and admin references, police checks, etc that are stored and available so you don't have to do them again. Asking for a...

Concur with Sid. You're better off doing the leadership. Many mid-level and upper level roles open with an MEd in leadership areas, plus experience.

Hi Zebra, target IB schools. You want to stay in that environment to progress. You have both MYP and DP experience - I am assuming you have your Cat 1 or Cat 2 certificates? You fill an I&S or Lang-Lit role - and have experience teaching across, which can be beneficial for smaller schools which ...

it sounds like you are EU citizens. You will have it easier than non-EU, especially in today's climate.

Re: Professor Career Changer

Just a word about the Phd. Some schools will NOT hire you based on that - especially if you are young-ish. I once worked with a director who hounded out everybody with a doctorate - because, to quote Highlander, "There could be only one." Him. Basically you are asking to be on the TOP pay ...

Re: Search October Virtual Fair

The truth (as seen by SJ) about this recruiting season? Forget any other year you have gone recruiting. This year will not be like that. Schools hiring NOW for next year? Like Spotted Owls - very rare. Everybody is kicking tires, everybody is hoping that they can line up something - schools, teachin...

Re: Applying to schools in husband's home country

God no. The instant you note you have a husband who is a national, you are a local hire. Even if you recruit as an international hire, once your husband is 'revealed' your contract might change after the initial period. If you don't need the fringe benefits of housing, etc, then mention it. If not, ...

Re: Professor Career Changer

Yeah, Memory1, Get certified. It will save you staying awake nights if your school is downsizing or if a new head comes in and goes 'head hunting'. Not having a credential will automatically eliminate you from many schools, and from countries where no credential = no work permit issued.

Re: chances for newbie teaching couple

Your husband's math is the selling point. You (at this point) would be part of the package of him. If he is teaching Math 11 or 12, then it is better for his prospects. You might not get in at a great school, but you can get in at a school in China, get the experience, then start shopping around. My...
