Re: Is SEARCH worth it this year?

If it isn't coming up on Search then you really should start digging, or you are UK teacher and should be looking at tesjobs.co.uk

Every day I see postings for multiple teaching areas in multiple countries/regions/continents.

Re: Effect of Brexit on WE teaching job market?

@PG - Britain - specifically England - has a TON of Irish teachers, many of them Northern Irish. However, they also have connections with Ireland (if you have an Irish grandparent, you can apply for Irish citizenship), which means that even though they have an Irish background, they have an English accent. I side with TP - schools will take those teachers, or Brits with existing EU continuing EU residency through an other-national parent or through marriage, and the UK passport teachers will go the back of the queue.

Re: US/Canadian license or QTS

Canada won't do it for you. The requirements can be quite tricky and vary province by province. Plus, you need a valid work permit in some jurisdictions, so you won't even get in the door.

US might be better - but it might cost you 6K through TeachNow (now Moorehead University) out of DC. Search members get $1000 off of the tuition cost.

QTS - are you in the UK to do this? I don't think QTS can be done internationally, except under special circumstances at specific schools.

Re: Trying to Teach in Singapore

If you want to work at an accredited school as a teacher, TESOL is pretty worthless unless you are a certified teacher AND teach ESL/EAL/ELL. The certification is what allows you portability.

This says it all, National. Think about if you are seriously searching for a job, how many hours you would spend trying to aggregate everything Search sends you in a daily email. That alone is priceless depending on how you value your time. If you think your time is $25 bucks an hour, ten hours or so pays for Search membership for three years. You would spend more than 10 hours combing through schools looking to see if your job is there or not and trying to find out the information that Search makes available to its teacher and admin members as part of that fee.

Re: Trying to Teach in Singapore

"I'm in the process of getting a teaching license from the US."

And there is the heart of your problem. Get your certification, get a job in SE Asia if you can't get Singapore right away, then keep plugging away. Make connections and contacts at conferences, sports events, etc, and milk them for what you can.

Re: Out side China job offers

Astegar, it's why I am avoiding China. My life is too short to deal with their regulations. My friends (not Shanghai or Beijing) are in or shortly getting to, three different cities. I think you are right that depending on location and school influence, plus local government initiatives, some places are easier than others to get to.

Re: Moving Home Success Stories?

Depending on your teaching area, 10 years prices you out - they can hire two new teachers, one of whom will last, for what they pay you. Given school based budgets, this can be a concern for some administrators when hiring.

Re: Vaccination and other issues.

As I watch the postings on Search, this is very common for schools to ask if you have been vaccinated. And very common will be, prior to arrival, asking for proof of vaccination.

I am not sure why it is grotesque at all?

Re: Questions about timing

Being an examiner IS a positive in interviews at solid schools. It means you have a greater understanding of what the fundamental elements of good papers are and thus the ability to impart that to your students.

Re: Administrative Certification

MoC, as a Canadian in your position, I get jobs and interviews. Once they hear there is no such beast in my jurisdiction (and I offer to go the universities and teacher certification sites to show them), it ceases to be an issue. Some schools will write you off, yes. But experience speaks louder than certification, and with your Masters, you should be OK. Do not let this stop you from applying.
