Take a look into iTeach DC. It results in the same Washington DC credential as Teach-Now, but $2,000 cheaper. They have payment plans too.

Re: How long do you stay at your 'dream school'?

I'm at my 'dream school'. I imagine I'll be here for the foreseeable future (or until something major happens that pisses me off too much).

Ultimately it comes down to what you're looking for as a teacher vs what the school can offer. Both of those can change over time, so if one (or both) of those factors change too much then it's time to move on.

I didn't do it the the UK, but I did it abroad. The main things that the school has to do is have the Headteacher sign a form confirming that you spent at least 200 hours working with them in a 3 month period, and be okay with you getting parental permission to video record the students (if the school doesn't have permission already). Ideally they should also provide a mentor who will meet with you regularly and assess you against teaching standards, but if this isn't possible then Teach-Now can assign an online mentor.

Offering some money to go towards a mentor might be worth investigating. I don't know if Teach-Now offer this already, or whether it would be allowed in case it was interpreted as 'bribing' the mentor. I think the main issue will be finding a school that will take him on for only 3 months.

When I booked my Praxis tests, I had to select which institution I was attending so that they could automatically send the results to them. At the end of my exam the computer gave me an option to withdraw and not have my scores sent to Teach-Now, so I suppose if you are 100% sure you failed then you could select this option. Obviously the risk is if you end up passing then you've just thrown the test away unnecessarily.

> I assume that PRAXIS tests can be taken as often as one needs?

Yes, but you have to wait 21 days per attempt.

Re: IPGCE for an experienced teacher?

An iPGCE/PGCEi is not a licence, just an academic course that equates to roughly 1/3 of a masters. Teach-Now results in an actual credential. A US teaching credential is more valuable than a British academic qualification, even if you're British.

Agreed - I think changing their name would probably sway me to study with them more than gaining regional accreditation. It's a shame because I really like their mission and the price is incredible, but putting years of work into something that will probably get laughed at is an issue.

Re: University of the People - Master in Education Leadership

Definitely the cheapest M.Ed out there. It's a relatively new program so very few (if any?) people have completed it yet. The UoPeople subreddit seems pretty useful for gauging the quality of instruction - sounds like a mixed bag of reviews, with a few recurring negative themes (lots of inconsistent peer assessment, poor customer service from university advisors etc). With that said, I don't think it's fair to compare the quality to a university that costs 3 or 4 times the money. I also know it is also going through the process of regional accreditation, which could be quite a game changer.

My main gripe is with the name. I really don't want to put "University of the People" on my resume...

Re: Schools refunding tuition fees

My school is giving a 20% discount for remote learning, but not offering any refunds. Any parents who paid for the year in advance will have their fees credited towards next year.

That's so expensive though. Why not go for a cheaper regionally accredited US university, or any other UK university at a better price? It won't make any difference to most employers (unless it was something exceptional like Oxford or Harvard).

If/when UoPeople get regionally accredited, or if I somehow end up at an IB school, then I will seriously consider their M.Ed even though the university name sounds like a communist diploma mill. It's only $2,660 USD and could very well pay for itself within a year or two. $13,000 would take significantly longer.

And this is the problem - you are referring to an abuse of power when literally all that has happened is a director inviting a new employee to join him for lunch in a group setting.

But who is the victim in this perfectly normal social situation?

But what part of going to a group lunch implies anything to do with sex or abuse towards women?

Firstly, these are rhetorical questions that are unrelated to this situation. But to answer, if a woman claimed that their reputation and well-being was destroyed after being targeted by a man then I would take it extremely seriously. But again, all that has happened here is an invitation to a group lunch... Not a date, no coercion, and with plenty of other 'witnesses' who would be there if he decided to do something untoward.

People like you totally undermine the #metoo movement.

How on Earth does getting invited to group lunch turn into a discussion about gender, gaslighting, and himpathy? Hilarious but ridiculous.

Re: Korea

I went the other way around (Korea to Thailand). To me it is as simple as as money vs quality of life. Korea definitely had its financial benefits and I really enjoyed my first few months there, but by the end of my contract I couldn't wait to get out. Overall I found it boring and homogeneous, not helped by the fact I disliked my job. Thailand on the other hand is less money but an amazing quality of life.

Obviously teacher experiences will vary depending on personal preferences and the quality of each individual school, but I believe the general trend will be that Thailand is a nice place to live but Korea pays more money.

I don't think I've ever seen an international school require a masters in the subject they are teaching (although maybe there might be a couple out there?). The main benefit for the vast majority of teachers would be to get a raise, move into a new position, or just out of personal interest.

Interesting... Sorry to hear you got knocked back! This makes me suspect that it's specifically Teach-Now on the radar. Psyguy's Mississippi route is probably the safest for now.
