It's not black and white Psy Guy. I'm not suggesting anyone should not be compensated for their work, but as I stated, a good teacher is in it for more than just that. I have passed up more money and more prestige to work with higher need populations. Ive done that because I love it and I wanted to. Military kids have unique needs and stressors that require teachers who actually care about that and them. You plainly could care less about this and I just wish you would. Not actually expecting what I say to have any impression on you though.

Sad sad sad. A good teacher is never just a teacher. The role should include parent, advisor, coach etc... when it's needed. Unfortunately whoever interviewed you failed to assert this was not the case with you PsyGuy. You've made it quite clear throughout your constant posting that you're in this for the money, not the kids. You've stated plainly that the only downside to DODDS is the kids, because they have "issues". Your views might work on the international school scene, but now that you're essentially going to be teaching American public school children it's quite a shame that they will have to be subject to your attitude about them. I would be elated to be in your position, but not for the same selfish reasons as yours.

I have the same license from New York State/ city. It only qualifies you to work with ELLs, not high school English. I mean I can work with high schoolers but I would be their ESL teacher not their English teacher. I would be really surprised if an Inernational school would consider you qualified to teach any kind of Enlish literature or high school English. The license and experience does not prepare you for that.

I follow along on the Facebook page. Some people who are applicants have posted there. It seems to have been met positively. There might be a few people who it bothers but in general it is a very supportive and friendly place. It gives me great expectation that if I ever get a chance to work for DODS it will be equally as positive.

I'm not feeling a press to find a position at the moment but I'm a little bit on the fence about posting there next year (when I won't have missed the application deadline). WeDoDudes suggestion to network is obviously spot on. That's a great way to get hired in any field. I think it works best if you have some personal connections other thn just posting on the FB page. I'm sure some of your former teachers know current ones. I would be on touch with them about that for certain.

We haven't gone anywhere yet but my family is excited for us. They are practically buying their plane tickets to come and visit.

You should contact Search directly for a solid answer on this but I would think doing the Sarch internship might not be possible with children because their are visas involved. Even if you fully covered the expenses of having your kids with you they still would need a visa to reside abroad and I'm doubtful schools would sponsor dependents if it's only for an internship.

I think questions specific to your program of study as an undergraduate and feasibility of double majoring/minoring and such should be directed at your academic advisor. No one on here knows the ins and outs of your degree program, but your advisor does.

I don't know where you're located but the Teaching Fellows program (similar to Teach for America) accepts certified teachers in two cities that I know of (Pittsburgh and New Orleans). I work for them part time so this is where my info is coming from.

Peace Corps wouldn't count as teaching experience and Teach for America only accepts applicants with no teaching license or degree in education so you won't qualify for that. You said you were planning to study abroad. Maybe you could find out about doing your student teaching at an international school, possibly one where you would like future employment. If not, try to student teach in a top public or private school, somewhere where they are doing really innovative things. Hiring is really tight in the US right now so use your student teaching experience to make connections. With your family situation you'll need those ties to help you get your foot in the door when you're ready to teach internationally and even to get a full time job in the U.S.

I so want to be encouraged by that as that would be great for me too. I feel like the bottom line though is, given the option to hire me and adjust my salary accordingly or spend far less to hire someone who will be cheaper, what do you think the school will do? You said that's written into your friends contract about adjusting income according to dependents. I'd be more interested to hear if they actually have and are hiring teachers with a number of dependents. Has that been the experience at your friends school?

Do you plan to gain teaching experience first before applying to teach overseas? I ask because I think without any experience and that many dependents you'll have almost no shot. I would think with 5-10 years of teaching experience and a willingness to go anywhere you might be able to find a position. I'm speculating on this based on my own research, so hopefully someone with experience overseas can confirm.

I spoke with someone at Search and was told that despite having an Ivy league masters degree in teaching, 8 years experience, and lots of leadership roles in my teaching career I have almost no shot due to my dependent situation and my regional preference. Everything I've read on here confirms that.

It would have to be a program where she earns an actual teaching license from a state, not just a certificate to teach in a language school. Does she have any teaching experience? She would likely also have to student teach if she was earning her first endorsement as a teacher. I would think she would probably only be considered for an international school position in ESL if she gained some actual experience teaching in the field after becoming certified.

I'll be interested in the responses you receive as I am in a similar position (+ an additional child) with similar teaching qualifications and a husband with a skill set similar to yours. I have a hunch you will hear that the issue is not that there might not be work to be found for your husband, but rather you may not find a school willing to hire you with three dependents. Without a teaching background your husband essentially counts as one. I'm fairly certain I have no shot in the traditional sense due to this. Because you have one less child than me you might have a chance but I think you would probably have to be super flexible with location and kind of school.
