Re: Family friendly locations

Neither option is really open for us. To stay in IT for the few more years we need financially I will have to leave the family 'at home' ☹

Re: Poor admin reference - how do I deal with this

I have this issue with one school I worked for. I just clashed with one of the Heads who was the most egotistical pr!ck I have ever known, who interfered in my work and indermined me. He was half of a married couple who were both my managers. I resigned at the end of my 2 years and have never given either of them as referees. They have both moved on but I am certain they have cost me job offers. I have had some excellent interviews that were heading to an offer but went dead with no explanation. I suspect either of these two scuppered me. Unfortunately I have just had another similar experience with a Head who made thinly veiled threats that he knows 'all' the Principals (yeah, sure!) TBH I am at the end of my patience with these douchey Heads and their bullying toxic ways. Sooner rather than later I will be heading for more civilized workplaces.

Re: CHINA OR INDIA (BEIJING OR NEW DELHI)

Well I am pretty patient - I did a lot of years in TH

the Middle East. With a trailing family, India seems like an option. What are considered the best/easiest cities for expats?

Family friendly locations

Many schools prefer not to hire ITs with kids. Saudi Arabia has recently introduced a 'tax' on expat workers' dependents. If you have a trailing spouse and 2 or more kids where can you reasonsbly hope to get hired in the current employment climate? QSI seem family friendly but seem to have a bad rep. Any suggestions?

Re: CHINA OR INDIA (BEIJING OR NEW DELHI)

Well I was in the ME for over a decade which might be a reasonsble prep for India? Male with trailing family. We know it would be a genuine adventure but it appeals over the current alternative China.

Re: CHINA OR INDIA (BEIJING OR NEW DELHI)

@shadowjack: not Canadian, Brit. I appreciate your comment - and financials are always a factor but in my current situation I need a fast and easy transition into paid employment.

Re: CHINA OR INDIA (BEIJING OR NEW DELHI) - work visa fquest

@senator - understood but sadly there are times when you have to take what is available and in my case I need a job in a hurry and those are my options.
Beijing seems to pip the post in desirability but my follow up question is which location is it easier to get a work visa - India or China?

Re: CHINA OR INDIA (BEIJING OR NEW DELHI)

Many thanks for the replies - it is Gurgaon rather than New Delhi itself but from what I have read its pretty much the same thing. Both are interesting countries with pros and cons so I shall see what happens.

Re: China and pollution...

I wouldn't go to China at all if I had a choice but right now I am not in such a lucky position. Beijing pollution especially worries me and if I end up going I have a clear exit plan after 3 years with the motivation of savings and adding to my CV. I won't stay longer than that unless I have zero options. It is a worry but right now I am not lucky enough to be able to choose a better place to go to.

CHINA OR INDIA (BEIJING OR NEW DELHI)

Not asking about particular schools - the ones I am looking at both have solid reputations but I am asking about expat life in both cities - which would you prefer/recommend - Beijing or New Delhi?
Beijing has slightly worse pollution - New Delhi is dirtier and smellier.
But what about ease of living as an expat family? Safety? General day to day living, shopping, etc.?

Re: What is your greatest motivator and biggest regret?

Motivator - Making as much coin as possible so we can find somewhere to settle down where my kids have a better future.

Regret - 1) The circumstances that caused me to have to work overseas in the first place.
2) losing friends and family whilst overseas.
3) Having to work with some truly awful colleagues and managers who are clearly unemployable in their home
countries.
4) Now that I am in IE I wish I had done it 10 years earlier so I wouldn't be doing it now (which contradicts all of the
above)

Re: January 2018 start - where?

@NeoEagle - nope, got canned the other day. I was fully expecting it from the nastiness that was flowing from management. I have no regrets about leaving this toxic school and will post a review in due course. The reasons given for my termination would not stand up in Europe - a clear case of unfair, constructive dismissal. It has sharpened our resolve to bank coin asap and get back to countries where we have legal rights and are not so at the whim of abusive managers.

Re: Men's Beards

I want to add to my earlier response that since you are under 30 a beard would be ok. My feeling though is that if you are job hunting and over 40 a beard might make you look too old - and I have been told that in Asia schools prefer you clean shaven. When I am clean shaven it's a sure sign I am job hunting. Once I am in a job since my usual day starts at an ungodly 5am or earlier the beard gets grown to save me time. Plus I get to apply some beard balm.

January 2018 start - where?

Hi, if I wanted/needed an overseas teaching/school admin job in January 2018 (or as close to as possible) which countries/regions should I look at?
