Re: Retirement Goal

As a married couple with no children - $1,000,000 in investments and a paid off house. That would allow us to walk away from teaching and either live frugally or continue working in a different industry and move towards FatFIRE. 3 years to go.

Re: Search Shanghai Fair

Mostly the former. China is having issues getting teachers and dependents in. If you're single or part of a teaching couple, I can *sort of* see taking the risk, but I don't know why anyone with children would apply for jobs there right now.

Re: Qatar contract advise

That sounds dodgy. Did you look at the reviews for this school on the paid side of the site? If not, I would suggest you do....

Re: Teaching Abroad and Home Ownership

Agree with all of the replies above. The one thing I would suggest is to make sure you install a good security system if you aren't going to be renting it. Other than that, I have 0 regrets about purchasing a home while overseas - it gives me peace of mind to know that I always have a place to go if/when I get tired of life as an expat.

Re: How many teachers have had Covid?

~10 of us have had it, but we've also been virtual and WFH since March so we definitely go it from somewhere outside of school.

Re: Maritial Status: Single, No Answer... OR??? need advice

If I saw you had listed yourself as "single' and then found out you were not in the interview, I would almost certainly no longer consider your application. Part of that is the lack of transparency and the other issue (which is the biggest) is that my country has very specific restrictions on spouses. I truly don't understand why you wouldn't just be upfront and say "Other" or "Married".

Re: Left DS Mid-Year

I don't know about other Heads/recruiters, but if I saw "charter" and "United States" I probably wouldn't ask too many questions.

Re: Pollution Levels in SEA

I can't speak to the other countries over the course of a year, but Bangkok is ROUGH pretty much year round. A 5k run feels like you've inhaled a pack of cigarettes and the AQI is regularly in the danger zone.

Re: US License Renewal

I transferred my Florida license to New Jersey because 1. I will never teach in Florida and 2. New Jersey has permanent licenses that don't require renewal. I did this 3 years ago, so things may have changed, but the process at the time was extremely straightforward and took about 2 months. It may be something you want to look into if your state has a reciprocity agreement with NJ.

Re: applying for the same position on multiple sites

Agree with both @sid and @Heliotrope. Applying through multiple platforms means that I have to spend more time cross-checking references/materials. I also run the risk of having to argue about how I "found" the candidate to avoid being double billed for hiring them.

Re: Re-training as a maths teacher with a BA (language studies) and a PGCEi

Out of curiosity, why are you looking into re-training for math, specifically? Do you have a background in the subject in some other way (work experience, something hobby-related, etc.)?

Re: If not in your home country, then where do you plan to retire?

Spain. My old coworker did this and apparently it's quite easy to do and you can split your investment into multiple vehicles (e.g. house and bonds). https://www.globalcitizensolutions.com/ ... isa-spain/ .

Portugal has a similar program, but I feel more at home in Spain.

Re: How do you get to work?

Taiwan - Scooter - 100% necessary unless you lived in Taipei.
Korea - Car - 100% necessary if you live in a rural area.
Thailand - tuk/tuk or motorbike. Walking was possible, but you'd end up covered in grime.
Now - I live on a compound so it's a 5 minute walk and the school provides transportation for me to go anywhere else.

Re: Stay or go for it?

The only way to know is to attend a fair and/or start reaching out to schools and see what happens. If you're willing to If you're willing to keep your options open in regards to location, I am sure you can find something.

Also, ISS doesn't cost very much.

Re: Advice for married couples working together

Every couple is different and you're going to have to find out what works best for the both of you. My husband and I have been living together (often in very close quarters) and working together for over a decade. We have found that we are stronger as a pair than we are as individuals. We unfortunately do not have the option of having a lot of time off, but we have date night every Friday or Saturday make sure that our cell phones are ignored for anything but emergencies after 7pm (he is now admin, so turning his off is impossible). We worth with many other couples and I'd say they're 50/50 on the "don't talk about work at home" rule. We personally talk about work all the time, but again, that's because we like to.

Like anything in marriage, just communicate with each other and enjoy your new adventure!
