Re: US Citizen - Retirement Saving...?

Very strange. The first book is “Mill…ionaire” Teacher. Keeps changing to “poor”. What an odd feature of the forum.

Re: US Citizen - Retirement Saving...?

Stick to the earned income route, and get hold of any of Andrew Hallam’s books. poor Teacher is the first and there is a very recent one as well. Follow him online.
Avoid the sharks that prey in international school waters. “Advisors” who will sell you very expensive “instruments” and “pensions”, with long commitments, complex structures, and no path to riches except for the advisor. If it sounds too good to be true…

Re: New to The Game...

Agreed. The pandemic needs to be taken into consideration. If someone was caught up in a pandemic situation that messed with your length of stay, make sure you provide the context to help a recruiter understand. It’s a small world, we’ve all heard (been part of) some horror stories, and we also know that some schools and countries handled things much better. What made your situation worthy of leaving?
Lots of people will be getting a pass on shortened stays in the pandemic. Recruiters will be balancing those with your bigger picture.

Re: New to The Game...

To be fair though, this hypothetical 2/2 ad infinitum beast does indeed have an edge in applying to bottom tier schools. The 2/2/4/6 candidates will not even be applying, and the other candidates will include multiple.5/1/.5/1 candidates. 2/2/2 wins there, if you call that a win.

Re: New to The Game...

Nope. She will not.
Once I get to 2/2/2, I’m out, unless there’s some other amazing reason to proceed.
PG strongly feels that 2/2/2 etc makes no difference. But PG is not a recruiter, nor can she summon others to agree with her. All her claims in this area are her personal ones, without backing.

Re: Is there a demand for autism specialists?

I suspect we're all teaching students with autism, and many teachers don't know it.
If you're looking for international schools with dedicated classes for students with autism, you might be looking for a long time. Those international schools which consciously accept and serve students with autism, usually do so within the mainstream classroom.

Re: New to The Game...

You’ve gotten pretty good guidance so far. Our hive is knowledgeable.
Not everyone views the alternative pathways as problematic. There are many roads to Rome, and which one someone chooses depends on plenty of factors. Some of us see interesting life experiences as valuable. From what I can see, you didn’t languish overly long in silly places, which is a sign you’re a quick learner and looking forward. You’ve had more classroom experience than most teachers with only two countable years, and that’s fine with me.
China might be your oyster right now if you’re willing to stay. Find some moderate to decent PYP schools and start applying. Get any of them to give you a job, and two years from now you’ll have four years experience and two years of IB. Massively stronger than your current position. Even better if you stay three or more years. Don’t make the mistake of trying to do just one year- with your cv so far being rather chop and change, you need to add a longer stay soon or you’ll be relegated to the ranks of those we recruiters presume will love us and leave us without leaving any real mark of value.
If you stay in China and get PYP experience, you can postpone thinking about another degree. Or get it now so it’s done. Whatever suits you.

Re: Vaccination and other issues.

Search indeed does not vet schools' answers to just about anything. Once a school passes the rigorous process needed to use Search to recruit, after that it's mostly trust as schools update their profiles annually. Similar to how Search does not vet applicants' info either - it's trust. In both cases, Search will respond if someone reports an inaccuracy, but it's about trust first.
As for schools giving different answers in the same country, that can be accurate too. Some bigger countries, federations in particular, let regions/states make different decisions. Others have different requirements for different regions based on Covid numbers, and still others have different regulations for different types of schools - there may be public schools, private schools, magnet schools, international schools, tutoring centers, etc in the same city, all under different laws.

More interesting to me at the moment is how strongly shawanda feels about the ethics of these questions and practices related to vaccines. Given all this individual has said so far, about how egregious it all is, I wonder if shawanda's ethics suggest that they should not deal with Search at all, nor with any school which asks any questions about vaccines. Ethics are real, with real implications for how people should behave. If one finds a truly abhorrent practice, ethics generally require that one refuses to have any dealings with the perpetrator, possibly after first alerting them to the issue and seeing if they correct their behavior. One should certainly not gain any benefit through an alliance with such an organization, such as getting a job. Nor should one give benefits to such an organization, such as by paying a fee.

Re: Is SEARCH worth it this year?

I'll agree that the virtual fairs are pretty useless. I have several friends who work in the recruiting agencies, mostly in Search, and even they are not fans. To paraphrase their viewpoints, there are a few loud, important recruiters who insist on holding them despite the lack of interest from their colleagues, schools and applicants. Maybe to keep their hand in for a non-Covid future? Who knows. But useless.
Does that made Search useless? Far from it. Still arguably the best single source for openings in decent international schools. If not the best, than second best. And since ISS and Schrole got divorced, I argue their positions diminished and Search is in an even better position. Don't skip them just because they do one thing you don't use.

Re: The only school *I* would consider working in...

I have written a couple of IB guides, but I don't think you've ever heard me make a declaration re "only" school I'd work in. (Full disclosure. IB guides are written by teams and are officially authored by the IB, not individuals. I've been on multiple teams.)

Re: Out side China job offers

I was contacted by a recruiting company I’d never heard of, saying they worked with schools who knew how to get people in. Said it had worked. But she also blithely referred to an incoming principal who had been refused entry and the school dropped her in October when they couldn’t find a pathway. Not reassuring overall.
So no, not personally.

Re: Vaccination and other issues.

Shawanda: “what I think is at the heart of the reasoning of many of the proponents' of mandates and mandatory reporting: she wants a leg up in the job market over her un-vaccinated competition.”

Remind me who started this madness by complaining about a recruiting company asking about vaccines?

😂
I am almost afraid to ask, but I’ll be a risk taker.
Help me understand why asking the question is “grotesque” and why people should be “outraged”.
