Living On Campus

Anybody willing to share their experiences living in Staff Accommodation which is on the school campus. While this is free accommodation and you don't need to pay for bills etc, how was one experience? I have watched a video on Youtube and does very much feel like you are trapped (no balcony, staff living above, below, and next to) as a family having our own space to relax and unwind is important and 24/7 having staff around us, just feels like we are living in a prison.

Would be great to hear from people that have lived in this situation and find out what was the +ve and -ve experiences people had. No option for an accommodation allowance at present, this will only change as move staff join and then staff accommodation becomes less available. Also, all the old crew staff would get the first choice when that situation presents itself (which I can understand and agree to)

Re: Morals and Contracts

Thanks for your feedback @Hellotrope, but the location is an important factor when considering a move for a single or a family. location and area need to be seriously considered for a number of reasons let alone your or your family's mental well-being and what the location has to offer to make that transition work. If we are looking at the UAE or even China location and the area does play a factor. You did mention a family in tow, but one can't at times judge a location from Google Search and a school website, one needs to also speak to teachers in the school or try and reach out to people living in the area that can give a first hand experience.

Morals and Contracts

Are there morals when it comes to signing a contract and then reneging on it? I have been given a contract for an area my family and I are not too thrilled about but a great job opportunity. Do we sign it and send it through, currently still in the interview rounds for schools and locations and also great career opportunities that are better suited. It's a gamble. People must have been in the same situation given a contract to sign but a few weeks or a month later getting a better offer somewhere else.

The only thing both parties have invested in is time and the role doesn't start until August 2023.

ISS-Managed School

What does this actually mean? What are the benefits of working for a school that is managed by ISS? Apart from the professional growth and of course, the networking opportunities when considering a new job.

Update From a Recuirter Regarding China

This was posted on social media,

Given that China has not been issuing dependent visa's since the pandemic began and currently there is no sight of this changing in the near future our China-based clients are clarifying with us that it makes no sense to interview candidates with families (Children or non-teaching partners) because at this point they cannot get them into China and we don't know when this will change. Our clients have been requesting we submit only those whom they can secure PU letters and visa - currently solo travellers or married teaching couples only. Also worth noting that schools in China are also still going to prioritise those candidates already in China - certainly in the early part of the season. As a result - it is clear that we really will not have many options at all for those travelling with dependents for our 22/23 season.

Don't forget for the first 180+ days you are taxed at the highest rate of over 30%.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai

If a family of three are potentially thinking about looking at a post in one of these two countries, what are some of the things a family of three needs to beware of before during and after an interview? Please note only we a not a teaching couple so only one will be teaching.

China New Tax Law

Can someone with hands-on experience be able to explain to people that haven't worked in China before what this new tax law means for Expats and how does this affect salaries and the total package that a school will normally offer you and your family?

That's interesting I reached out to HR in Thailand and they confirmed with me yesterday that they are accepting applications from teachers with families. I also spoke to somebody working at a school there and he also asked his HR team that said the same thing. Interesting how people are hearing different information crazy making it hard to target a particular location with the misinformation.

Countries and Schools not accepting Teachers with Families.

Hi,

Hearing mixed things including from recruiters, are there any countries that you are aware of that is not accepting Teachers with a wife and children. Understand China is one country but on job advertisements, some aren't saying this in their job advertisement and a lot arent. Things are a concern as membership sites could be expiring, and thinking directly emailing schools that are advertising or even calling them to see if this is the case.

Schools that dont post package etc

Is it a trend that schools that don't post a salary scale and what your benefits on their site are generally shady?

I have had two interviews with the same company and both times I asked about the salary expectation and benefits. Sending documents and updating HR application forms etc, only to be given a contract and omg the package is shit. What a waste of time for everyone.
