Re: Teachers in Europe

My question is about a serious energy crisis, European banks going under (Credit Suisse and a couple of others, too), a major drop in enrolment/related pay cut, and serious depreciation of CHF/Euro (similar to the 2008 financial crisis in US and Asia). A former colleague is reconsidering his stay in a W-European country fearing this situation that might unfold in a year or two.

Teachers in Europe

With inflation on the rise and looming uncertainty, how are teachers stationed in Europe planning their next move? Do you like to stay put or thinking of relocating else where?

One year online certificate programs

Hello all,

We are looking for an accredited online one-year, affordable leadership certificate program for a group of teachers transitioning into mid-level leadership positions. What would you recommend?

Thank you.

Re: Years of IB Experience for Top Tier Schools

Fortuna is right. This forum is dominated by a handful of people and discussions are like egotistical tug-o-wars and 'shouting matches' rather than meaningful exchange of ideas (similar to teachers' meetings at international schools). Best option: read the first 4 or 5 responses and ignore the post when it goes beyond a couple of pages. You know what 'am saying?

There is another breed of admin who will treat you so well during the interview and share great stories about their school's accomplishments and collaborative spirit. Fast forward six months or a year and report a genuine problem, instead of addressing the issue, they will start excusing themselves citing a technicality or logistical issue. These are the so-called admin who have a 'glowing' CV with headship at tier 1 schools, but some of them simply lack the creativity and raw intelligence to troubleshoot.

Re: Search Job Fair Demise

Irony dies a million deaths in IT recruitment irrespective of the format:
- A 60-year old administrator drawing a high 6-figure salary refusing to hire a 50-year old veteran teacher as s/he is 'expensive.'
- A shiny 21st century school brochure tells you nothing about the quality of teaching or rigour of the curriculum.
- There is no ed tech innovation in IT, it's just a bunch of apps and play. Majority of ed tech coordinators can't code nor do they have the willingness to learn programming.

Re: Years of IB Experience for Top Tier Schools

Having taught at a few top-tier schools for a while, here are my two pennies:
I think the fundamental premise is to have deeper pedagogical content knowledge which means you can guide all students successfully both in terms of every day learning as well as steering them through complex assessments, projects and extended essays. If you can shorten students' learning curve by teaching them creatively, finish syllabus on time, and provide enough review opportunities, IB isn't really rocket science. Of course, experience helps, but you need to know your stuff like the back of your hand if you wish to navigate through multiple IB classes. I have seen PhDs falter in connecting with students and building strong professional relationships. 3-5 years is a good time to experiment and refine teaching and learning strategies.

Thank you all.
@JDK
If you have to do it all over again, would you enrol in the same course or a different one? I have heard Australia offers some pretty rigorous options.

Affordable Housing Prices

Happy New Year all. For those planning to purchase property, which cities offer affordable prices (200-250K USD) for a 1- or 2-bedroom condominium or apartment not far from downtown? I'm sure Singapore and Hong Kong are out of question. Thank you.

That will be a lot of zeros and ones. Why would you ask it here?

Re: Harvard's CSML

Good points, gentlemen. The problem is there are many folks who are leading and taking the initiative and despite having the experience and credentials, it could be a stroke of luck or the right connection that can get you the first break.

Thanks sid. That's what I thought. Not any different from PTC. Admin credential is the way to go, I guess.
