Re: Taking a year out

Take a gap-year! All the kids are doing it these days.

Re: The Search Blacklist

It's real but, let's face it, it's managed by Search's associates, so how air tight can it be? Give it a few years and they won't even recognize you and will be glad to take your $$$.

Re: Negativity in the workplace

Back to the original point of the first post, I think that it's wrong for a teacher of good conscious to simply be happy at a school that is not serving to meet the potential of the students or faculty members. Being happy in such an environment and looking down at the "negative" teachers who are pissed that the school is so dysfunctional strikes me as being part of the problem at best and incredibly self-serving at worst.

Re: Serious Concerns about Medication

I would not hire someone on so much medication, but unfortunately, I probably would never find out, unless I was a bad head who inspected all of his employees' health insurance expenditures. Maybe find the root cause as to why you depend on such medications BEFORE turning your life upside-down by moving to a new country for a new job?

Re: Anyone have experience with being Jewish in the ME?

ap410, for goodness sake, don't take your innocent Jewish children to the Middle East! How bad is your life in the US that you would even consider it? And, please, don't tell me that anti-Semitism in the US is anything close to anti-Semitism in most of the rest of the world. It is so much greater everywhere than in the US. While the US is not perfect, good luck having your kids sing their songs on a street in London! Ha. I wouldn't be comfortable having my children basically hide their identities just so I could work somewhere exotic. What's wrong with you? Look to East Asia, but even there you could potentially run into more dangerous anti-Semitism than you would ever find in the US. South America may be your best best, as the general ignorance and general poverty of the population sort of takes up a lot of time for locals - they don't have as much time to hate Jews and blame them for all of their problems.

Re: Family friendly locations

This is an appalling scenario faced by far too many highly qualified educators. Admins, I hope you are seeing this thread and hanging your heads in shame at the fact that you don't go to your board or ownership and explain to them/it the benefits of employing ITs who have families/dependents. Otherwise, as others have pointed out on this board elsewhere, you may have lower costs in the short-term but will have an underwhelming monoculture staff-wise in the long term, which I would tend to argue also reduces the quality of the school long term because margins end up being so small that families can never be hired after being phased out (unless of course a smart head cuts costs elsewhere, but how few really do this?).

As for Nomad's particular situation, I would look to some countries in South America and some countries in Asia (but I don't know which) for your best bet at overcoming the discrimination that you are unfortunately facing.

Re: Do I need to sign up for Schrole if I am a SEARCH candid

I find the Schrole schools to be pretty annoying. They know exactly what they are doing and they think so highly of themselves that they think they can get away with it. As if I want to work in Brussels anyway. You list the same positions every year. It must be great!

In all seriousness, Schrole's recommendation system stinks, their app is not clear or intuitive and I predict Schrole won't be around too much longer because of its tendency to alienate candidates who don't need the bother.

Re: Parent confidential references - how much do they count

I think this is a crazy thing to ask for because you of course are going to ask a parent who loves you and gives you gifts, etc. Quid pro quo big time. Don't recruiters understand that?

Re: Convincing My Friend Not to Go

@marina,

I hope you were right for your friend. I think it's both hard to land a job at the fair at that age AND hard to land a job by just sending out virtual applications. Either way she is probably in for a long haul.

From what I have heard, the fairs this year are going to be a bit less robust with positions. People are simply staying put or schools are listing and hiring in the fall.

By the way, how is your position going? Was it worth it leaving international education for the $$?

Re: SA job fair Cambridge

This fair is in Boston, which is fun to visit in Blizzard season, but, frankly, the majority of schools at this fair are looking for 20-somethings with no strings attached.

Fleeing Korea

That's the general sense every year, but this year it seems even more pronounced. Are ITs fleeing South Korea over fears of nuclear war or are they leaving working conditions and/or Korean quality of life that is/are worse than ever?
