Re: St. Gilgen International School

It's amazingly beautiful and near Salzburg of Sound of Music fame. I expect the school will become more and more popular in the years ahead because of these facts alone, though I think their programming and facilities are quite nice too.

Re: ichiros

Well, it's nice to know that Ichiro, despite going MIA, will live on through his wonderful idea about how to make a fair more enjoyable and successful for all involved. Several years ago I created what we could call a Reisgio: a little note to a school at the end of the fair. It was essentially a message that said, "Thanks so much for your consideration...I am sorry to hear that you chose another candidate for your administrator's job that pays $27,000 and does not include safe housing but I wish you well in your third world country and with your newly-hired single, 24-year-old administrator who I saw last night getting drunk at the hotel bar. I surely could not do as well as her in the position since I have seventeen years of experience...a FAMILY...and no desire to go down on you. Clearly you feel as though my spouse and children would make me less successful than your new hire with no discernible professional accomplishments or chance of landing a spouse in the near- or long-term because of her tattoos, proclivity to be on her smart phone at all times, complete lack of intelligence, and raging feminist ideology and superiority complex that will make her a real joy to all males students with whom she interacts. While you are boiling your water and sleeping in mosquito nets, please know that I've just accepted my dream job in Switzerland where I will be enjoying fondue, making $115,000/year, and getting free tuition for my children worth $90,000. Again, all the best!"

Sort of like the written equivalent of the scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts enters the store that treated her like trash before her make-over only to discover that she just spent thousands somewhere else. Your Loss!

Re: Best agency for counselors? Is there a difference?

Nikkor's reply is why this forum is so dangerous for the casual user.

First he says that there is a definite shortage of quality high school counselors with relevant experience. This is false. I am at London and I know for a fact this is false.

Then he throws out the tier one line, as if one person's tier one is another person's tier one. Again, just basing my impression off of what people here in London would call tier one would give me as many different answers as their are people in attendance here in London.

Finally he says that, "we feel that there is no one on the Search database that stands out." This means that Nikkor doesn't know what a good college counselor looks like or he is simply not looking at the Search Database at all. There are some amazing counseling candidates this year with very diverse and valuable experiences.

In London the school counseling postings were relatively few and pretty much Asia-centric. These locations have a harder time recruiting great candidates in London because many come to London for the European schools.

UNI is great if you are just entering the field or if you are single or if you really like Asia/ME or if you are all of the above.

Good luck Curt but remember that this forum has so few contributors that it's very dangerous to take anything you read here as gospel. It can be helpful if put in context, but it is not the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

CIS London Fair

I am curious about whether anyone here is currently attending the CIS Fair in London? If so, how many schools are attending, and do you care to name them? I can't seem to find any information online about which schools are attending this fair. Thanks.

Re: Childcare on Jeju Island, South Korea?

If English speakers are really important to you, I don't see how you could go with Jeju. Very provincial relative to Seoul metropolitan area, and even Seoul has very few English speakers compared to other major capitals. Don't let your love of a school or location cloud your judgment about what is really most important for your family.

Re: Bangkok fairs this week…how is it going?

I don't know PsyGuy, so this is not personal, but he talks a good game but you must wonder how he "knows" so much. Direct discussion with a Bangkok recruiter today yielded news that his school did major hiring, as are many, at the Search Bangkok Fair. Fact is, good couples and singles are filling up positions that are still listed on Search right now but that are in fact no longer available. Those heading to London and Cambridge better hold on, positions are going to be deleted from Bangkok Fair schools in the next 72 hours.

Re: which one would you choose?

Let me just take the side of Russia since it is clear that people who post on this site have a clear bias towards all things Asia.

Russia is the most highly educated country in the world: http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Global-I ... rld/Russia

Russia has a rich and storied history.

Singapore is the hot thing these days, as many other Asian countries are, but these are not Western countries in the traditional sense; therefore, if you want to be closer to the West, Russia can claim to be part of both the West and the East.

Many of these Asian countries have hyper competitive students who would slit your throat and cheat on the SAT just to get into an Ivy League school.

Moscow would allow for more European travel on short breaks. Singapore would allow for visiting many Asian regions that for someone who may be more of a fan of Western history/tradition may be more boring.

Weather is not everything.

Route66 says that Singapore has a reputation for education that is miles ahead of Russia's. I dispute this in every way. Just because there have been a crop of international schools built in the last thirty years does not equate to being miles ahead of Russia in education. Everyone here needs to get a grip. People on here are trying to constantly compare schools in different countries and with different populations. It's a fool's errand. It's like saying that Northeastern University is tier one and GW University is tier two. They both are overpriced and have their warts. Check your egos and supposed tiers. Go for the right fit for you and your family.

I would want to know what currency I am being paid in at the Russia school. If ruble, that could be a big problem if no carve out exists for vast currency devaluation. Go with your gut, not with what others will think.

Re: Nido de Aguilas in Santiago

Yes, but in Venezuela you have to deal with a communist dictatorship and in Brazil you have so many issues with crime, red tape, etc. Nido seems to have better benefits than both and neither of the issues mentioned in the previous sentence. I have to believe it's just better funded or trying to overcome something.

Nido de Aguilas in Santiago

I am really impressed with Nido de Aguilas' compensation package both in terms of salary and housing, etc. Is this because the pollution there is so bad that it is having a hard time attracting recruits? I feel like there must be a catch since I can't seem to find anything else that would call for such a package, especially in comparison to other SA schools.

Schools' Timelines

I am seeing a lot of Asia and ME schools post jobs. Not so much for Europe. Is this a function of higher turnover in the former, or is it because the latter start posting/recruiting later? When can we expect most jobs to be posted?
