I have always thought that Higg's self-serving, cinical attitude was perfectly suited to management and marketing. :D :D :shock:

RISS in HCMC say they will reinburse but always pay less that the actual cost. They always say that they could have booked cheaper.

Many of the bad schools will pay airfare late so that you cannot pocket the money and do a runner. Make sure that any school that promises to pay tells you when they are going to pay and tell then how much the ticket will cost and get them to OK it before you buy the ticket.

ME

When I was in the ME I was amazed by how many people loved it, I felt it was and educational and cultural cesspit. When i dug a bit deeper I found that most of the cheerleaders had very little experience of how good most schools were in other parts of the world or indeed any experience of education at all.

I normally agree with Psyguy when he is talking about things that I have personal experience of. Like him, I have been working IT for many years and I have worked in a few different places, If I want information about schools for my own use I can E-Mail many people that have first hand experience but lots of new teachers do not yet have a lot of contacts so use this board.

If Psyguy was not replying to every thread this board would be dead. This is an opinion board so post your opinion.

The way that the Psguy Haters conduct themselves on this thread and the restaint shown by Psyguy tells me a lot about the respective personal qualities of both.

The group is expanding like mad, they were making conditional offers to many people a few months ago and expecting people to wait till now for confirmation. Looks like they are now trying to fill gaps made by people who gave up waiting.

It could be that they have recuited more students than they expected, but I doubt it.

Re: Discussion
@AnnieT

The difference between those is good and bad schools, and whether the school has an open salary scale or a closed one. Open doesnt just mean having a salary scale it means having public or at least published salary scale, one thats been standardized for at least the current year and approved by ownership.
Any school can put together a salary scale in Excel and say its their salary scale, and change those numbers with each candidate they bring in. Just because it "looks" like a common salary scale doesnt mean it is.

Even in the case of an open salary scale, these scales use "steps" and while a year is equivalent to a "step" its not the only factor that can shift what step you enter in.
You are, of course, right. None of the schools that made the offers could have been called good schools. I have in the past made offers that moved people up a few steps on the salary scale but only for teachers that I needed to fill difficult gaps. The subject that often asked and was always refused tended to be PE teachers or american coaches who seemed to feel that were special. I always groaned when I had a PE post to fill because I knew my inbox would be swamped with iliteracy for months.

I have had many offers over the last 2 years at more than the school's official salery scale and I have also had schools that have replied with better offers when I have refused the first offer. One school in the philippines even doubled the offer that they had orriginally made.

If you teach a shortage subject at IB deploma level and have the right experience some schools will be flexible with salary scales.

I would not employ you with 4 kids, it is just too expensive, some of the lower tier Asian schools may look at 4 more white faces in the classrooms as a bonus as they feel that it looks good. even better if they are blonde.

Your dh teaches English which is posibly the easiest subjuct to fill (PE is i close second.

Many experienced teachers would be wary of employing somebody who has been homeschooling. Homeschoolers tend to be very self opinionated about education and are very poor team players.

I would advise that you both get properly qualified in school teaching in your own country and then start applying in a few years.

@PG

That would be the sensible way of doing it. MYP rules say that you have to report on all 4 criteria and then convert to the 7 point scale.

The sensible way and the MYP way rarely cross

SIS is almost as bad as RISS, do not go near it.

Every time they lose a student to a better school they have a witch-hunt for a teacher to blame.

Got to disagree with PG on this one, I hated the ME but I would go back for a couple of schools and this is one of them.

Dubai is not a nice place for many, but it is probably one of the best spots in the ME. If you want to live the ex-pat life and can blinker the darkside of life here. Also you will need to be less of a yes man for this head.

M only worry would be how long will a great head last?

My last school was fairly crap, but they only insisted on one complete year of service after training. They did not even try to claw it back when they did thier normal sackings on the last day of term.
