Re: Masters Degree That Is Worth Time/Money?

Michigan State University has a very interesting Educational Technology program with a one month summer program in Ireland that takes place over the course of three summers I believe.
Check this website out for more information. The cost per summer is a little over $8,000. I found it to be really reasonable. http://www.edutech.msu.edu

Re: Countries where age discrimination is not a thing

I am also facing the same issue. Here is what I have found:

No visa age limits (as reported by schools):

Croatia, Costa Rica, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Korea (South), Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Russian Federation, Georgia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Brazil, Malta, Japan, Peru, Kenya, Colombia, Romania, Chile, Latvia, Uganda, Jordan, Lebanon, Switzerland, Bolivia, Italy, Poland, South Africa, Nigeria, Mexico, Honduras, Czech Republic, Austria, Portugal, Israel, Luxembourg, Pakistan, Vietnam, Georgia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Taiwan, Congo, Philippines, Mozambique, Togo, Senegal, Ecuador, Guinea, Azerbaijan, Uruguay and probably many other countries.

Visa age restrictions:

55: Thailand

57: Colombia

58: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia

55-59-60: Indonesia

60: India, Iraq, Kuwait, Mongolia, Morocco, Thailand, Qatar, Singapore

62: Bahamas, Myanmar, Netherlands Antilles, Malaysia, Oman, Philippines

64: Albania

65: Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, China, Turkey
Teachers' reports differ. Age limits also fluctuate depending on the job seniority and other circumstances. Some schools have been able to negotiate wavers, etc.

Re: Library Certification

Dear Geuro
The State of Idaho offers an independent online course of study that will get you a Library Media Specialist endorsement on your teaching license, but I think it is only applicable if you have an Idaho Teaching License, check okay.

Good luck as I love my library position!

Re: Qatar, UAE, Oman, Best Schools/Packages/Living Standard

Having lived and taught in all of these countries I can tell you that Oman is hands down my favourite. It has kind people, amazing places to travel to within the country....miles of endless empty beaches, craggy mountain villages to explore, a city like Muscat with everything you could want. Loved it and went back twice for holidays after I left.
Hope this helps. Go for TAISM or ABA American British Academy.

@ Sid, the teachers have not been given any indication of whether or not their contracts will be renewed, pay rises have been mentioned, but currently no scale has been distributed so people have no idea what they would be getting by staying.....I could go on and on but it makes me weary!

As a single parent I always made it clear within the first paragraph that I was a single parent with a dependent. I usually got back very positive responses. Alas that is no longer an issue for me as my"baby" is now in her third year of university; time passes so quickly. She is a true third culture child!

Early decision bonus

I have taught for 30 years and over 15 of them have been internationally. Has anyone ever heard of a school offering an " early decision bonus" for making the decision to NOT return the following year? My school is offering bonuses of $1000 dollars payable at the end of the school year even though teachers have not been given letters of intent or informed if their contracts will be renewed.
Thoughts? Teachers have one week to make decisions as we got the early decision letters today.

I have a friend working there right now. She went because a former colleague was there and obviously liked it well enough to recommend it to my friend. The pictures she posts look good as does her housing......the Internet in the country I am in, not too far from her, is infrequent so I haven't had a chance to find out more......helpful?

Sorry I didn't answer your question completely the first time. I sent my CV and references with the initial contact.

Contacting schools directly

They were hiring for other positions at the time but I contacted them anyway to inform them of my strong interest in working at their school.
They told me to contact them again the following fall, which I did, but my name and interest was noted.

I contacted a school I was very keen on the year before my contract at my present school expired. The new director came on board and was informed of my future. interest. So to make a a long story short I am headed there for the next school year! Contacting the school directly certainly worked in my favour!

Joyjobs tends to be the best place to go to find summer employment as a teacher. It is a site you must pay for though. I worked at a summer school in Korea for a month and made $3000 which included accomodation and a transportation allowance. I found the post on Joyjobs. I am not advertising for them, just stating facts.

I will chime in here as well and say that I have always used Expedia, unless my school is booking and paying for the tickets. I find booking directly with airlines to be outrageoulsy expensive compared to what one can find on the internet. I have booked flights on the internet from some pretty obscure places for good prices. Give it a go and compare prices.
