Re: How much easier to get hired as local hire at decent sch

As I stated before, I was not assuming that his wife-to-be was SIngaporean.

If his wife-to-be is already on an EP, with an expat package, I can't think of any school that would offer him an expat package, he would be a local hire. If his wife-to-be is Singaporean and he will have PR, I very much doubt that any school would give him an expat package, so again he would be looking at local hire.

Re: How much easier to get hired as local hire at decent sch

I didn't come here to argue, just share information. What I stated was correct. Once the guy becomes PR himself, then yes it is moot. But if they are looking for immediate employment, it is very relevant. If he is PR, then the original question of whether or not he applies for overseas or local hire itself becomes moot, as he will only be eligible for local.

Re: How much easier to get hired as local hire at decent sch

Actually, I just checked and even those marrying Singaporean residents need to apply for a Letter of Consent. SO the same rules I stated above still apply. Unless they become resident themselves, which is still a process they need to apply for. The information can be verified here - http://www.mom.gov.sg/passes-and-permit ... ued-by-ica

Fair point. I had assumed his girlfriend was not Singaporean, but was working there on an EP.

Re: How much easier to get hired as local hire at decent sch

Not completely accurate, Psyguy. He can apply for anything, but companies have to stick to strict ratios to ensure locals have equal chances of employment. If he secures a job, the company applies for a Letter of Consent for him to work. This can take up to 6 weeks to process and he may not work until this is formalised.

Supply teaching is strictly limited to one school, as the school must apply for the Letter of Consent for him to work for them. You are only allowed one letter of consent, so may only work for one school at a time. Supply rates vary greatly between schools.

Re: How much easier to get hired as local hire at decent sch

Has your friend thought about visa issues? If he plans on getting a local hire contract, is he planning to go out on a tourist visa and then look for work? He can't get a dependents pass as he is not married, therefore the only other long term option is LTVP, which you are not allowed to work on. Then for a school to give him his own employment pass, he needs to be making over a minimum amount (can't remember how much), which makes getting hired on a local package potentially problematic, especially given his lack of experience. Best options are to apply for the new, budget international schools that are cropping up...or get married.

Re: Cost of living in Singapore

Hi again, I think your current situation family-wise makes a difference to the responses given. We have two children, and I'm the sole working parent. Hence, I see the figure I quoted as what I feel is necessary. If you are without family, advice from the other posters is realistic.

Re: Cost of living in Singapore

I'm in Singapore and would agree with the above. As a general rule of thumb, I'd say look for an overall package which equates to at least $10,000 SG per month.

Re: Trailing Spouse Work Problems / Family Planning

Regarding maternity leave, I've had two children in two different countries/continents. First country allowed 3 months paid maternity leave, which could not be reduced by holidays - luckily for me, I had my baby in June so got the full summer holiday added to my maternity leave. I was offered the choice of taking that as is, or going part-time for an extended period, which I did. Second school, 2 months paid maternity leave and up to 1 month unpaid. I took it all. Am now back working full time, with a 4 year old and a 9 month old. It's hard. I'm permanently tired. But for us there's no other option right now.

Re: Teaching in Singapore

Hi, you will struggle to get relief/supply work as the salary will not be high enough for you to get an employment pass. You cannot work on a LTVP. So you either need to get a full time position, where your employment pass will be sponsored by your school, or you need to get married and switch to a dependents pass (which it is possible to work on).

Re: What's the Worst?

New school opened by a big brand company in Africa. Arrived to find school a building site. Company refused to believe average rental rates so forced to live in the boarding house - walls were still damp and mould was rife. Had to walk through school to get home. After being told we would have 300 children, we opened with 35 kids from nursery to Y10 - I had 2 in my class. We had to prepare amazing displays for a parent cocktail evening with no coloured paper, no internet, no printer, and no photocopier. And no pencils. Regularly got paid a week late. Every single resource bought had to be approved by the mother company, even a few cheap plastic skipping ropes to entertain these children who were studying in a building site. Went through 3 principals in my two years. Some local staff had contract terms changed, meaning they weren't paid for summer break...and were told this as they returned from said break. It hasn't got any better since I left.

Re: QSI-like organizations

While they are all chains, I don't think the chains mentioned have the stream-lined application process of QSI. UWC doesn't. Nord Anglia doesn't (or it didn't, not looked at them recently). GEMS don't. If it's a 'one application, many opportunities' thing you're looking for, an agency would be a better bet.

Re: Teaching in Singapore

Psyguy has missed out one other visa option - a Letter of Consent. As your spouse will be working, you will have a Dependent's Pass. People on a Dependents Pass CAN work in Singapore - the company wishing to employ them applies for a Letter of Consent. I know many supply teachers (and expat classroom teachers) working on a LoC. Most supply teachers at my current school are on LoC. You can only do supply at one school, as you can only have one letter of consent.
