Re: IB vs The Rest

It has opened the doors for you to experience a number of curricula, not curriculums.

Schools that don't pander to the 1%?

I'm considering returning to international teaching after half a decade working remotely as a writing instructor for college-bound high schoolers (college essay prep basically).

One of my reasons for leaving the international circuit (eight years experience, three schools, high school English) was the level of stultifying privilege and entitlement among international school students and imbued into international school culture. They were basically like private school students in the US with more frequent flyer miles to their name. What a great environment in which to start out life! And their parents? I won't even start. If you're on this board, you know.

But the wretched of the earth was not everyone. I also instructed wonderful, curious, intellectually driven students who made my job worth it. They were unfortunately in the minority.

I have deep ethics, as all educators should. I did not get my Master's in Education saying "I can't wait to facilitate greater and greater life opportunities for those already born into historically unseen level of wealth and opportunity!" (Who does that?) Wealth is not morally neutral. Follow the income ladder up to the stratosphere and you encounter both overt and and tacit insults to democracy, our collapsing climate, and most notions of fair play and equity.

So, does any school do it differently? Is there any international school out there that recognizes the moral and ethical hollowness of the ruling class and seeks to reform this? Is there a school that consistently lives out the true meaning of educational meritocracy? Is there a school that actually brings kids from across the socio-economic spectrum under one roof? What do you got?

Re: Madrid Schools

The pay in southern Europe is something international school are aware of and, frankly, should be ashamed of. Anyone with a modicum of financial sense would pass over Spain. But earnings aside, it is the best country on earth.

Re: ACS Beirut?

Thanks, all. I get the low cost of living that a place like Beirut guarantees but anything under 30k is ridiculous. You would make more working at Popeye's in the US.

ACS Beirut?

Let's say I wasn't concerned about the Syrian conflict spilling over the border at the moment and turning Lebanon into chaos. Anyone have the latest on ACS? Admin? Salaries/package? Cost of living?

Re: "Chinese International School" Why no reviews?

Let's be critical thinkers. I think it would be wise to avoid any place called "Chinese International School."

Re: The International Teaching Life-style and Finding a Mate

"The dating market place is turned upside down outside of the U.S and the western world. In much of Asia, Eastern Europe or LatAm, a single male expat has more options than he knows what to do with. It's overwhelming at times."

I agree that single, and usually but not always white, males have a field day in some parts of the world but we really have to make a distinction between A MATE, as the OP stated, and BOOTY. I know so many teachers, especially in the 20s and 30s, who had revolving girlfriends in central America but very few developed into actual long-term relationships. I think there are so many cross-cultural differences that undermine many of these relationships. Some do work out and become beautiful partnerships, but so many don't.

Linkedin exists specifically so you can network in your chosen field. If a recruiter does not want to be reached out to on Linkedin they shouldn't be there. Most Associates have a robust Linkedin presence. Go for it.

It would be great if people could post any success stories that come out of the fair. Position, school, salary, etc.
