Re: African American

I agree with a comment above, there's a picture of you and if they aren't interested, they won't hire. I have lived in both Asia and Africa (the latter obviously isn't a problem), but in Asia, things could be different. I know a few of the black British or Americans that I have worked with have talked about discrimination, but I don't think this was in the workplace so much, more when out in the local community and being stared at etc.

Re: Lying former director - shut out of Search

How easy is it to switch to another associate? I so wanted to do that because I had been using someone in the States and the times I went to job fairs in London, I found a couple of other associates super helpful and just because of the ease and the fact that they answered questions that she didn't I wanted to switch.

When I signed up for the third time I was looking for a job I remember trying but it didn't work. So now I am curious.

Thanks

Re: Global Recruitment Collaborative, Dubai Fair

I am a little confused as to how non GRC candidates are registering. I tried looking at it and it said you need to be working at or be an alumni teacher of the schools listed so I am not really sure how anyone else could even get in.

Re: Question about PYP schools

Thanks, I feel a little better! I did take one year out of teaching to work in education development in Kenya. I managed a team of 10 curriculum writers and edited all curriculum, lesson plans and textbooks created for 150 schools in the slums....I would think this would add and not hinder to my CV. Thanks for your advice!

fairs, search associates or applying directly

It has been 5 years since i last was looking for work and i am wondering if things have changed much. Is Search Assoc still a good way to go or is applying directly to a school better or...? It seems like things are changing but having been out of the market for a while, I am just not sure...

Any advice would be appreciated, I am currently updating my info on Search but have no plans to attend a fair this time and I wonder if that makes a difference.

Question about PYP schools

I am an American teacher, single, with 11 years of experience. 2 in the States then I worked for 5 years in PYP schools and then 4 years at a British school in Africa. 1 school was tier one and then I took the British School job because I really wanted the African experience at the time. Now I am wondering if I am no longer even marketable ( I hate British curriculum and will never consider it again) and I desperately miss PYP... Will the decent PYP schools consider me with only 5 years PYP experience now?

It depends on what you like to do and what life you make for yourself. Also, something to think and ask the school about is where you would be living because traffic makes life in Jakarta very difficult at times. If you are talking about BIS or Sinarmas World Academy, you will be a bit far from town where there is a variety of things to do.

Search Associates didn't agree

I am not being invited to this fair and have been told it is mainly for couples with extensive experience. This is not what they told me when I first asked about this fair. I should have asked to be signed up 6 weeks ago instead of two weeks ago. Even as late as last week, I was told there were spots and requested one, but will not be able to go now anyway. Is it more competitive this year or because I am apparently not a strong candidate? The Search Bangkok fair that was recommended to me was even more insulting. I am sure I have enough experience for London!!!!

Bangkok fair

Thanks everyone, I am feeling a bit more confident! Now I wish the list would stop being taken off the Search website. First time I looked, I was interested in 10 schools, then new list and 5 schools and now there is no list again!

I don't know what to do because I am open minded but will not even consider going to the Middle East or China! That is why I think London might be better for me, but I can't afford it...

It is either try to get a job beforehand or go to Bangkok.

Thanks

jobs in Japan

I completely DISAGREE with psyguy, foreigners in Japan are leaving all over the country as they sort their lives out post-tsunami. Schools lost people in the immediate aftermath and many teachers are choosing to whether to stay or go. I have worked at some schools in Tokyo over many years, know administrators...and I know that they are already posting jobs for next year on Search.

There will be more jobs available, but at certain schools, the salary and benefits are so good that people won't necessarily leave. It depends on the school quality, but unless it is the top, yes many people are leaving.

job search

I agree, I think the best thing you can do is go through Search and meanwhile look at school websites directly and write to them directly. Your references and CV make a difference. A CV that stands out (use boxes), good references as well as being on Search may get you a job between now and December. Looking into everything now to see what is out there is a smart thing to do and in a few more weeks you can really start the job search full on.

I agree with you, this forum is fantastic!

To Pinkstar

The Search London Fair is mainly IB schools. In my experience and an opinion I often hear from others is that if you do not have PYP/IB experience, the Search London Fair may be difficult for you.
The Search London and the CIS fairs are usually back to back so perhaps attending both is a good idea? The head at my last school ( a "tier 1" school) asked me why I was bothiering to go to Search because CIS is so much better, but I didn't go to the CIS fair. In his opinion, there are better and more of a variety of schools at this fair.

French teachers

Hi,

I don't know how much help this is, but I was at the London January fair last time I searched for a job 2 years ago. My friend is a French teacher and there were only 3 jobs for French going at that fair specifically. I would write to every school you are interested in first.
