Have you ever been evacuated?

Has anyone ever been evacuated from the country they were working in?

What was the process like? Were you evacuated to your home country or the nearest safe place? Was it as your expense or did the school or your government cover the costs? How much were you allowed to bring with you? How much notice did you have? When, if ever, were you allowed back into the country where you were teaching? Did you keep your job & did things return to normal afterwards?

Re: GRC

I was registered with both Search & GRC. GRC was great for the job fair, but it was still worth it to me to keep my account with Search because they seem to have the more information about the schools (even if it is self reported and not always entirely accurate) than any other organisation.

Advice for married couples working together

I was hoping for some advice from other couples who have worked together successfully. I am recently married. Although I have taught for many years, this is my first job where I am working overseas with my spouse. My husband & I just started working together. So we work at the same school, live amongst the other teachers, and it's kind of odd for me. What advice or ground rules do spouses who successfully work together follow in order to have a successful work/life relationship? How do you keep your life from being consumed by work? And how do you keep your marriage happy & strong while working for the same school as your spouse?

Re: GRC

I used them last year and found a great job. The school has been wonderful throughout this whole COVID nightmare. I believe you need to have worked at another one of the GRC schools in order to register. This way you are somewhat vetted, in that you worked for a reputable school and completed your contract. I found it to be much more competitive than a Search fair, since many people already had a lot of connections and had worked at top tier schools. I believe they do contact your references straight away once you register. Hope this helps!

Malaria

We're meant to be moving to a high risk area for malaria. Our hope is to stay there for 5 years, possibly longer. Has anyone been in a high risk malarial area long term? If so, did you always take medication?

I'm thinking malarone might be the one I need to take. I'm not sure about taking it for 5 years. If I'm usually in my home or classroom (both closed off and air conditioned) maybe I could risk it? (At least until the pandemic comes to an end?) Any thoughts or personal experiences appreciated.

I wish I had known....

What do you wish that you had known, or wish you had been better informed about, before you began teaching internationally? (or beginning the process of trying to teach internationally)

Transferring Money US- UK

Hoping some money savvy person out there can help me answer this one-

I am a UK citizen. Next year I will be earning a tax free salary in US dollars. I have a US bank account to deposit my salary into, butI was then planning on transferring it to my UK bank account. I was wondering if when I transfer it to the UK, I would be liable for UK taxes, even if I am not domiciled in the UK?

Secrecy around salaries

I was recently reading a thread about which countries one can work in and potentially save a good deal of their salary. I feel like there is a lot of speculation and debate about this. It makes me wonder why schools are simply not more transparent about the salary they are offering.

In this recruiting season, I turned down several jobs. This was after spending a great deal of time preparing for interviews & sitting through the interviews themselves. Many schools make you speak to three or four people before they offer you a position. (this can easily take 3-4 hours of your time simply interviewing- often at odd hours due to time differences in different parts of the world) The main reason I turned down these offers is that when the salary was finally revealed to me, I learned that it would not be enough to live on and have any savings.

Why do schools waste their time, as well as candidates? If we knew from the beginning of the interview process what the salary range is, it would be easier to decide which opportunities to pursue and which to pass over.

Please don't recommend looking at the information on Search- since schools self report, it is often inaccurate (some over estimate/others underestimate) and you can't really get a very clear picture.

Can anyone think of a way to get schools to be more open and transparent with this information?

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

I agree with Nexttrip. I think GRC is definitely worth pursuing. I went to the GRC fair in Dubai last month. I thought they had a great selection of schools available. But, my experience was a bit more challenging.

I had a couple of schools contact me before the fair asking me to set up interviews with them on Saturday. So I was feeling somewhat confident- until I arrived and saw several interviews already happening in the lobby on Friday. I started to freak out a bit then. Even more so when many of the jobs I was hoping to interview for over the weekend had disappeared by Saturday morning before the initial sign up session. However, I went to interview signs ups and got interviews with most of the schools I was interested in. I had several interviews over the next two days and walked away with two offers, and still talking to a few schools. I was offered a couple jobs after the fair as well. In the end, the job I accepted was as a result of the GRC fair. I am thrilled with my new position. The school has been wonderful thus far, which I take as a really good sign.

If you are looking for jobs in Japan or Singapore or Thailand, you may not be happy with the GRC fair, but there are a lot of really good schools in what some would consider "less desirable locations" like the Middle East, Sub-saharan Africa, India etc. in addition to what I would consider to be the premiere schools for their region.

One thing to keep in mind is that competition for the jobs there can be FIERCE. I talked to several people who were feeling dejected about the lack of interviews or offers. But since this fair is only open to people who have already worked at pretty reputable schools, many people have a lot of connections and everybody seemed to be bringing their A- game. I would do another GRC fair, but next time, I would have a better idea what to expect. In my opinion, even more competitive than Search Bangkok.

Re: European adverts?

Some European schools will hire earlier. I got my job in Europe at the Search fair in London a few years ago.

Re: Rio and EARJ

Not sure about EARJ, but I do know that any school in Brazil will need to pay you in Brazilian reals, as dictated by Brazilian law. So, if you have any debts in your home country, how much you can pay off or save will vary based on how the Real is doing against your home country's currency.

Re: Substitution Survey

I've had a lot of different experiences having been in several different schools. The really top tier ones tend to have a "sub pool" and will call on them when needed. The less good schools will make teachers cover lessons for one another occasionally and keep track so no-one is asked more than two times a semester. The really poor schools require teachers to cover colleagues classes fairly often, generally with no reimbursement. Some truly awful schools even expect teachers to arrange for their own cover.

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

@Psyguy

Earlier in this thread you said about the Search Fair in Singapore in October:

"The East Asia fair is at the end of the AY in SG, which has an English speaking population of DTs. Its a regional dump fair. ISs on the circuit arent recruiting that early, they dont even know who is returning and who isnt. Its not how early recruiting works."

However, I have just checked the schools attending and there are some top tier schools on the list. I think that as schools begin recruiting earlier and earlier, this may be a chance for both educators and schools to get some early recruiting done. Rather than being a "dump fair" I think it may now be the start of the recruiting season
