Quality of the Job or Quality of the City?

I'm in line to take a job that is the perfect fit for me. It's a subject I am heavily passionate about and one that I would enjoy teaching on a daily basis. The problem is that the city absolutely sucks. Violence and pollution are rampant. I open this forum to the philosophical query--what is more important, location or the job itself?

Colegio Americano de Torreon

Has anyone ever worked here or know anything about this school? Low pay like most places in Mexico, but it seems like a great opportunity to learn Spanish.

'Inside Job' won best documentary at the Oscars this year. It exposes the truth behind the greatest theft in American history: the greedy scumbag Wall Street investment firms and their transferral of billions of taxpayer dollars to the top 1% of the US. It's even more applicable now, since so many Republican governors are declaring war on what remains of the American middle class through their dismantling of our collective bargaining rights. They're blaming teachers and firefighters for our state budget crises rather than laying blame on the greed of this nation's oligarchy. In a nutshell.

History, geography, political science. I hate teaching economics. I just finished teaching economics to US seniors. Very difficult, but oh so pertinent. I wanted to show them 'Inside Job,' but I couldn't get it approved by the principal.

So you're in Search Associates and not hearing anything? I'm in ISS and have only heard from one school. I was thinking about joining Search too, but that's 200 more bucks I have to throw down. Thinking of scrapping the whole int school thing and goin to work in the Bronx. Either route would be throroughly interesting. There's just so many hiring freezes and budget cuts in the states this year. Keep me posted on Search. Do they have a lot of social studies or ESL openings right now? I've seen some posts for counseling positions on tieonlline.com.

It may not count for much toward high end schools, but it definitely counts toward getting your foot in the door. And so does experience in the states.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Yeah, I've done a lot of international work but never with an international school. Tough racket to break into I guess. I'm thinking of signing up for Search also. Do you think that would be worth the extra 200 bucks, or should I just stick with ISS?

And no, I applied to ALL of the social studies positions available on ISS. I was not being picky. There are only around 15 to apply to.

I'm actually registered with International School Services. I've expressed interest in almost 15 jobs on that thing, and I've only heard back from one. I might attend the Fairfax fair in June, but that's a lot of money to spend when you're not assured of a good job. Plus, that means I'd have to tell my current school in the states that I'm definitely not coming back by june. That's a big risk, because I might not end up with any job. Now I live in a rural desert area on a reservation. I've lived here for 4 years and just can't take the isolation anymore. I need to live in a city.

They didn't even approve me until late February. And to my knowledge, there is nothing "wrong" with me. I am a bit picky in that I don't want to work somewhere you can't go out for a drink. I also have high expectations for schools I guess.

I really want to hear from people who have been to one of the late fairs before. What type of schools were there? Were there still good opportunities? What are the circumstances in which schools would still be at these late fairs?

Late in the game, but am I too late?

Well, I screwed up and didn't even file an application with ISS until February. Now I'm realizing I may be too late to get a job. Even though I have 5 years US teaching experience, US certification, a Master's, and extensive overseas experience, I am not getting any interviews. I want to know if I should be patient and wait for jobs to open up over the next few months. I really want to work in Thailand, China, Japan, or Europe but will this be possible? I also might attend the ISS fair in Fairfax in June, but is this even worth the money?
