Re: Staying for the Summer, or flying home for a visit?

We are staying. We could take one of the repatriation flights that depart every few days, but decided to stick around because, as Marieh stated, this is where are jobs are. Some teachers have left on repatriation flights, and hope to get flights back in once school opens up.

Re: Non-collaborative colleagues - advice?

You say you and the other teacher are part of a larger team. If so, the problem is not yours alone to solve. Has your team discussed this issue (quite common by the way) and how it is impacting your team and student learning? Sounds like your team needs some "storming" to bring issues like this to the surface.

I'm assuming that this person shows up to meetings and agrees to do things. If so, another strategy is to ask all team members to bring something you all agreed to do (e.g., a math test you were all supposed to give). If people don't bring it, the whole team should talk about it.

Another thing to consider is that the teacher who is doing his own thing might not have the capabilities to do what you agreed upon (again, common).

This is not accurate. Just more fake news emanating from our illustrious mainstream media.

Re: What did/do you do with your mail?

We use one of those services and quite like it. Very easy to use and quick turnaround. The scan option is very helpful as you can see if something is important fairly quickly (usually done within 24 hours). We've had them ship important correspondence to China using UPS first-class and FedEx. It's all made it so far.

Re: Future of International Schools due to...

It might be pollution, but I think other things are at play. The Embassy School in Delhi is, I believe, still dealing with visa issues because of a US/India incident. I believe many positions are still open in China because there are more "international" schools than you can imagine. I'm sure some people are turning down jobs because of pollution, but based on the number of people who have signed on for next year at the school at which I teach in China, it doesn't seem to be turning people off.

EllieSLP is wrong. Average PMI2.5 levels in Beijing are at their worst from November to February, mostly due to the high level of coal burned for heating. If you already have respiratory problems, I'd pass on Beijing.

Re: Comparing locations in China - pollution

This is my 3rd year in Guangzhou.I like Guangzhou a lot more than Shenzhen. By Shenzhen, I really mean Shekou, a small section of Shenzhen where many of the expats live and where at least 2 international schools are located. In my opinion, Shekou just feels weird--lots of expats, Chinese tour groups and a land-locked ship that has been turned into a hotel. I know teachers who love Shekou and have been there for 5+ years. It just wasn't for me.

In my opinion, Guangzhou (Canton) has more of a "soul" and is much more "Chinese". Guangzhou has so much history. Shenzhen was a Hakka fishing village in 1985 and now it is a major metropolis and still growing.

Both cities have a lot of great restaurants and easy access to Hong Kong (GZ to HK is a 2-hour train ride) if you need to get away. In addition to the easy access to Hong Kong/Shenzhen from Guangzhou, China Southern is based in GZ and has direct flights all over Asia and beyond. We have flown to Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap for 3-day weekends.

The worst things about living in Guangzhou are the usual issues that come up anywhere in China, including Shenzhen. The pollution can get bad, but not as bad as up north and not nearly as often. The spitting is still noticeable, but I think it's much less than even a few years ago. Pushing/not lining up, but again this seems to be decreasing. I think more people speak English in Shekou than Guangzhou if that matters to you.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your search!

Re: Comparing locations in China - pollution

I lived in Shenzhen, and I currently live Guangzhou. The air pollution levels are about the same. There are bad days in both cities, with the AQI going above 200, but most days are "moderate".

You might also want to consider other types of pollution. Shenzhen has more noise pollution than Guangzhou. Building is 24 hours a day in Shenzhen. Building in Guangzhou stops by 10:00 pm. I've been told each city has different laws, but who knows. Perhaps because of this, I think there is more dust pollution in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen also has motorbikes. They are outlawed in Guangzhou. Might not seem like a big deal, but they are VERY annoying and can make your life as a pedestrian a nightmare.

Re: Phnom Penh

We have friends who taught there. They have 2 children, and they loved it. As previous poster noted, lots of good restaurants/bars to choose from, and a fun night market. There are a few green spaces, and a nice riverside promenade.

My wife and I have not lived in Phnom Penh, but we visit every year and like the laid back atmosphere, great food and the most friendly people on the planet. Obviously, PP is nowhere near the touristy draw as other places in the country, but you can get to the rest of Cambodia easily (and cheaply).

Re: American International School of Guangzhou

If you go to the school website (aisgz.org) there is a lot of information. To help answer some of your questions, look at the "Welcome Brochure" under admissions.

No, at our school the PYP Coordinator is on the same pay scale as teachers.
