2017 Fair Diaries?

Hello all,

In the past, fair diaries have been one of the most helpful, interesting threads posted on these forums, especially to those that are new to international teaching or are looking during this high season.

Anyone care to let us know what their experience is like in London right now, for example? Of course, you can scrub your diary of all personally identifying characteristics if need be.

Thanks in advance!

Re: List of Schools for TS and Dependents

Agree w the previous statements: it just depends on you, the school, and the current needs.

I have had interest from schools who state on their Search/ISS profile that they will only speak to singles/ teaching couples, and I don't fit into either of those categories.

Definitely apply everywhere you are interested in, as I am now on my second international gig and am considered a "difficult placement."

Re: TAX-FREE TUITION FOR DEPENDENT CHILDREN

I don't believe it is a taxable benefit in Mexico and on south. Sweeping generalization, I know.

Re: Bangkok Fair

I second that emotion!

I was all ready to write one this year, then I up and got hired?!

... But seriously, I love those diaries.

Re: Undergraduate degree different than cert and experience

I have found that most schools care much more about the experience plus certification, not that your degree necessarily matches. However, some countries, as has been stated, do require them to match, for what I assume is visa related. The one country that comes to mind and it is always clear in job postings: Turkey.

For example, if you are going to teach HS English there, your major needs to have been English (or presumably Education?). Even if you are licensed to teach English and have 10 years experience, my understanding is that they won't be able to hire you if your major was say, Sociology.

This is not THAT common though, in my research anyway.

Re: IB Teaching: Day to Day, Unit to Unit

I teach secondary, so I am curious about MYP and DP.

I have gone to the sites and read various student and teacher blogs and forums, so I do understand the basics: Extended Essay, CAS, and so on.

I just was wondering what it would be like, in the trenches, of actually doing it, since I've taught AP, Common Core, American style curriculums, but not IB. Backwards Design (UbD) and all that.

I presume there are differences, like outside exams.

What does a typical day or unit look like, in terms of planning, classroom environment, etc.

Any comments are appreciated. I know this could become a pretty long answer, so I appreciate whatever you can add.

Thanks!

IB Teaching: Day to Day, Unit to Unit

What is it like? I have read and heard that it's inquiry based, very holistic, but I would love to hear from current/past IB teachers about what it is like compared to "regular" teaching. Is it so different? Is it hard to learn?

Reading IBO website and other blogs so far has only given me a superficial idea of what this program looks like on the inside.

Really curious.

Thanks in advance!

ISS iFair today?

I was wondering if anyone had participated?

Or, what are they like?

Re: Is an EU passport an advantage?

So, what is the difference between having an EU passport and "working papers"? Is that a separate process?

Re: Search vs. ISS and 3 Dependents

As always, I enjoy and learn from these discussions. Keep sharing.

My spouse also works, independent of location, so we are a two salary family just like we were (would be) in the States. So, as far as fending for our family financially, we believe we will be okay in most situations.

We have been abroad now for 5+ years and it has been a great experience. Nice school, great staff, ability to travel as much as we want. Save a bit too (though not as much as we would like).

Got hired at UNI years ago, with those dependents.

We want to teach overseas for the same reason, I am guessing, that most of us do: it's exhilerating.

Thanks again everyone.

Re: Asking Friends/Former Colleagues for Help in Hiring

Thank you for the advice all.

Yes, definitely asking friends and former colleagues about possible openings at their schools or just a kind word. Not expecting them to sit down with their director and interview for me or anything! ;-)

Re: Search vs. ISS and 3 Dependents

Shad, what exactly "isn't the kiss of death?" The specifics of my resume?

Currently, I'm registering for ISS AND Search until I hear some compelling reason from someone here (or elsewhere) about which is more open to considering me. I'd really prefer to avoid all all the registering business and know from the get-go whether they will allow me to sign up and be a full candidate.

Related question: When asking for references, what is a reasonable amount of time to ask directors/principals to have it ready by? A week? Two? Smart to include a timeline in the initial ask, as in "Can you write me a reference within the next two weeks?"

Thanks!

Re: Search vs. ISS and 3 Dependents

Thanks Overhere.

How dated are we talking?

It would be nice to know upfront, but I do understand every case is a bit different and there are no absolutely hard and fast rules.

Search vs. ISS and 3 Dependents

So, here we are: I am finally ready to play the ISR "What are my chances?" game!

My vitals:
Wife consults with US company (not a teacher, obviously)
2 small, school age children
15 years teaching experience, half in US, half internationally all at one school
US/EU passport
Licensed to teach secondary English and Social Studies
Majority of experience is English (grades 6-12), but have also taught Geography, World History recently
7 years AP experience
LMS Coordinator at school (Moodle); Google Educator (would consider a tech position too)
Open to go just about anywhere

Always interesting to read people's responses to these things, so thanks!

Second question:
I would like to get access to databases and possibly attend a fair. Search and ISS seem to be the major players. Before I pay and fill out all of this paperwork, will they both accept me, at least, as a candidate to access the databases? I have read here that as a rule Search does not even consider teachers with 3 dependents. I did not see that on their FAQ page. Just wanted to find out for sure in advance.

Thanks for any insights you might have.
