Re: Social Studies Demand

Social Studies isn't in high demand right now, especially outside of specialized areas like Economics. If you're aiming for better pay, being open to other subjects or regions could help. Having extra credentials like Special Ed can be useful, but experience really makes the difference in getting noticed.

Re: School still recruiting from certain countries only: THIS IS 2024!

I don't like seeing the pickings of 2024 schools still only getting them from certain countries. I get the visa and immigration rules in play, but it just doesn’t fit with the spirit of international education. Some of it also raises questions when schools say they are inclusive but have restrictions on dependents or flip the rulebook out of nowhere. But because it’s easy to frame it as saving money versus fostering a diverse, inclusive environment, it might come across as more about saving money rather than fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

Re: Dealing with toxic school leadership

It sounds like that would be such a tough situation. Thinking about it, it is hard work when feedback isn’t welcome and staff feel down trodden. If things don’t improve it might be a good idea to ask yourself if staying is best for your long term health. Sometimes it is best to move on.

Re: 24/25 Job Search

Sorry to revive this thread, but job hunting is really tough, and I've felt it, too. After a few rejections, I decided to get professional help with my resume. It made a huge difference, helping me stand out and pass through ATS systems more easily. So that's what I recommend to those struggling with finding a job: sharpen your resume.

Re: Racist Comments

When racism gets brushed off it’s so frustrating, instead of these being the safest places. This should be led by leadership, not only in policies, but with real actions. It’s about saying this behavior isn’t OK, whether it’s here or elsewhere. When the school doesn’t do enough about it, it sends the wrong message. That always includes always first, Support for those affected.

Re: Does my recent work history look poor? Will I be ignored when applying?

Honestly, I wouldn’t stress too much about it. Life throws curveballs, and schools know that. As long as you’re open about what’s been going on and show that you’ve handled it professionally, most will understand. People change jobs for all kinds of reasons. Just focus on what you can bring to the table now, and don’t let past bumps define you. You’ll be fine!

Re: IB Leadership/Educator Courses - Online Delivery? The cheapest?

If you’re interested in working towards a School Management and Leadership certificate but simply don’t have the funds to join the Universities of Oxford or Cambridge, then Harvard’s online course offers this for a very reasonable price of $2K. The University of Buckingham, for £6K, Ed.Ld. M.Ed, is a cheap, entirely online, if you are after more advanced credentials. Both ways are great ways to build up your leadership skills without spending a lot.
