Re: Year off?

Thanks for the advice. I've always heard mix things about taking a year off but your right I am sure the word pandemic will be a pretty easy thing to say and not worry about follow up questions. I am going to get a letter from the school that no longer needs my services saying I was offered the job so that some what helps.

Year off?

Anybody taking the year off? I got locked out of China in February and my new schools numbers dropped so I am not needed. Now it's very late and I am financially set to take a year off. Anyone see a downside to this? I'm sure the market is not going to be booming next year but the jobs on Search and ISS currently are not anything that sparks my interest. Just looking for some guidance. Thanks.

Re: Let the Bloodbath Begin.....

My current school (located in China) just reopened for grades 4-12 to make the Chinese parents happy. They are running a skeleton crew since most of us are out of country. The middle school is made of 9 foreign teachers with only 2 currently working at the school. The rest of us are running "hybrid classes" while they babysit the kids. The staff as a whole is burned out but considering they will be losing an estimated 25% of their students for next year (foreign students) they are trying to make the local parents happy. It will be interesting how long the students keep showing up considering they could very well do the exact same work at home and not sit 2 meters apart for each other with masks and eat lunch in silence. I am interested in hearing the feedback from the students. Seems like everything students enjoy about school will be lost for the time being. If parents think keeping them home is a fight I can't imagine dragging a 14-year-old out of bed at 6 to go to this new form of school.

Re: Reopening

My school in China is reopening for grades 9 and 12. I am not in country but they sent out a video to all high school students on the requirements and it looks like a prison. I would not want my kid going back and do not understand the value of going back compared to online. Also, since 1/2 of our staff is out of country many classes are still distance learning and the teachers that did go back are getting an increased workload without compensation. For example I was directed to find a teacher on campus to remove all items besides desk and computers from my class and make sure all desk are 1.5 meters apart.

Re: Situation in China

Working in China I have the exact same questions. We have been able to refund our tickets going back to China but have still had problems with connections due to being in China in the past 14 days.

Most of the schools have set up online learning to a degree so I assume we will be getting paid for atleast that time worked.

I do worry about the cost of getting back to China once the door opens back up. That being said I am not purchasing a ticket till I feel it's safe. I have had friends that went back this week because flights are cheap and they are going to stay home. I personally would rather be outside of the country and not stuck in my apartment.

Re: Situation in China

My school keeps telling me to report the 10th so I can do my 14 day quarantine just incase we go back the 24th. I have thought about it and just can't do it. I have signed a contract for next year outside of China and might just step down before I report. I am using the flights as an excuse but they have found a way to get me back thru Korea.
