Admin Credential Online vs. From Home Country

Hello folks.

TLDR: is it possible to get a full admin (principal's) credential online, or do practicums and other things necessitate being in your home country (one that is recognized by foreign governments for visa purposes....I live in the USA).

Basically I taught oversees for 10+ years and never got an admin credential because it didn't seem possible while abroad after some looking into. The closest I saw were the PTC courses and I did some of those before moving back to the States.

But now I'm back in the States and in a leadership grad program and it seems like I could have done this while abroad, including getting signed off for my 300 practicum type hours while teaching international. It makes me feel like I made a mistake by not tackling it online beforehand, but I think I found awhile back that it just wasn't possible for a number of reasons.

What do y'all think?

At the end of the day, while PTC and all of the different things they offer seem good, I'm kind of happy to be in a US state, getting the admin credential, and then experience, because it seems like the most legit way to make it happen. Let me know what you think.

Good points, but coming from someone that has lived around, and have wanted to buy for days, you have to be careful about the legal system and real estate norms of where you buy. I've heard firsthand stories of "lost" titles for expats, gangsters taking over a home, and lots of rules in different countries barring or limiting expat rentals (with due cause for the most part).

All told, you may have to pay more of a premium to find a secure situation. However Mexico can be a good choice, Pnomh Penh, Georgia....I think the standard for a good deal is around1,000 per square meter....

Best TAX Company for Expats

Hello folks.

I'm a US citizen who is starting to think about filing for 2021 and I have a bit of a complex return and want to get solid tax preparer (i.e. W-2 income, gig economy income, and foreign income).

I had one before that dealt with expats and they weren't so hot so I am thinking of finding a new group. Any suggestions?

Find a financial advisor that knows foreign income. We have Roth IRAs and we save like mad. As always (and it's usually not much help by the time a person asks for it) people need to start saving in their 20s. We are a dual teaching couple, 25 years in the US (public schools) and now 15 years overseas (3 of those as missionaries) and we have more than enough for retirement, as well as putting 3 kids through college debt-free. Living overseas massively helped, but it was starting when we got married (22) that really gave us the headstart.

Doing a Roth while abroad is the holy grail. How did you set that up?!

if you are an American make sure you have your 40 credits for social security and more importantly medicare. sign up online and check those credits!!
For real! I'm delivering Uber Eats right now (back in the States due to Covid) because last summer I did the check you speak of and saw I had like 39 or 39.5 credits. So I have to earn like 1,300 USD this year to get that 40th credit!

Some people say that it won't even be around in the future, but I'd rather be vested in the program and hope that something will work out. And also I know nothing of Medicare, but would rather be eligible than not lol.

The 4% rule was created when bonds in a 60/40 portfolio actually yielded something. 2.5 to 3% is the new normal--if you're lucky.
I'm wondering about this though. My conception of the 4% rule is that if you have 1.5 million, and you withdraw 4% a year, you will live with 60,000 USD a year for 25 years. So if you retire at 65, and your investments don't even return anything, you are still going to be 89 before you have no money, right?

And that's not taking into account that as the years go down you can surely whittle your budget down as you go as 60k seems like on the higher side of annual needs, you can also look to readjust your portfolio allocation, etc.

Re: What to study to hone my EAL support skills

Hey folks I just wanted to pass along a book that has really helped me wrap my head around the EAL situation. I shouldn't have been surprised that it was written by Gini Rojas.

It's called "Strategies for Success with English Language Learners." Through ASCD.

Check it out if you are looking for a text book of sorts for some ELL programs and/or working with ELLs.

Re: What to study to hone my EAL support skills

Thanks for the feedback folks.

PsyGuy, I was thinking of looking into some online TESOL or read up on some training books, so I was glad to see that recommendation.

grdwdgrrrl, actually last week I dug into some Gini Rojas materials from a couple trainings I took over the years. I'm getting some good notes and reminders. I still have a lot more of my training materials to review.

What to study to hone my EAL support skills

Hello folks.

To cut to the chase, do you have any suggestions for courses, or books, or certificate programs to help me level up in the EAL field (English as an Additional Language push-in and pull-out)?

Over the years I have worked with many ELLs, and have done some EAL support, but my bread and butter is Learning Support. I'm hoping to fill some gaps between the skills that cross over as a Learning Support teacher, and the direct instruction that ELLs need that I am not as familiar with.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
