Re: Where have people done online Master in Education and Leadership.

Canada has some options too.

Western University has a MEd Educational Leadership online option
Queen's University has an online MEd, one concentration is in Educational Leadership.

I am sure Toronto, UBC and other schools have similar programs.

Re: Teachers in Europe

At a school in WE currently, our salary gets indexed against inflation multiple times a year. We just got a 2% bump due to inflation, rumor has we will get another one before winter break due to the inflation rate. This is all government mandated.

Re: Update From a Recuirter Regarding China

Dependants are getting into China and the entry process has become much easier (removed some major steps) and quarantine is shortened by half in many cities.

Rumours of HK going to no quarantine in November helps would mean cheaper flights to HK and then signing up for the lottery to cross into SZ. This would make returning more affordable as the current barrier of insane flight prices might not be changing for a bit or at least until China removes the positive case suspension rule.

I wouldn't bet that China is open borders for another year at least but many hurdles of getting in have been reduced. They just need normal prices of flights, and then you are "only" looking at a 7-day quarantine with maybe another 3 in your apartment. This I feel would entice a lot more teachers and ex-pats and help put China back on the list. The dynamic zero COVID policy however is another discussion.

Keeping Canadian accounts under 5k as somewhat an emergency fund but also to pay off monthly CC bills (flights and travel) and to be able to easily transfer money to friends and family back home to pay for presents or stuff like that. Usually the account is around 2.5K as I try and put the money into my investing account promptly to reduce the chance of spending it on stuff. No legal/tax reason just my "work flow".

I have the USD account as I have a bunch of family in the states and when visiting its easier to have a USD bank card. So not required to have the USD account but with my personal situation it helps. Having a USD account might save you money on conversion fees, something to look into. How much is the bank taking for converting the USD to CAD on an incoming transfer? If its is a number you can live with or is comparable to the fees/hassle of opening a USD account at your Canadian Bank there is probably less of a need.

Re: Off shore banking

As a fellow Canadian I will share what I do. I have three accounts, 1. Normal Canadian Bank Account, 2. American currency account at my Canadian bank (get paid mostly in USD) 3. Foreign Bank account in the country I live in for daily living expenses.

I am a non-resident and still have the bank accounts, DL and one credit card. As Hallam says, a few minor ties like this are not a concern. Balances in the account 1 and 2 are usually less than 5K USD with regular deposits into my investing account with IBKR. I have funded the IBKR account from both accounts 1 and 2 without any problems.

To move money around the world I predominantly use Wise.com (formerly transferwise). Super easy and very good rates. I am not crazy about using them as a bank to store my money but have no problem with them moving it between accounts.

If you are just getting started with this, I recommend joining Andrew's Facebook group as there is a ton of great advice and Andrew often chimes in with suggestions/advice.

Re: Moving Home Success Stories?

Schools usually provide a letter on school letter head stating your years of service and your position. My guess is if you have letters of verification that add up to 10 years (or however many you have worked) that would suffice.

UAE Weekend Change

The UAE is moving the weekend from Thursday-Friday to a 2.5 day weekend of Friday afternoon + Sat-Sun. News has came out that private schools will follow this change too.

Will be interesting to follow how the different schools adapt to this change that is coming into place Jan 1. Anybody with boots on the ground in the UAE have more info?

Re: Out side China job offers

Schools are also not interviewing candidates currently in China who have stated they will go home this summer and then come back who have dependents. Too much uncertainty with faith that dependents would be able to get out and back in. I'm fine with this if the school is transparent and upfront about the process.

I would avoid China for this cycle if you are not in China. The reputable schools are being cautious, the less reputable will do what ever they want and cut losses when it suits them and too late for the teacher to find a new position.

Re: Delta variant and in-person vs. online openings

We start fully in person Monday. Mask requirement in early primary only. Have to provide our contact tracing app information weekly and temp checks to enter any building. Campus is open to parents currently. An unknown percentage of staff and students are vaccinated. Quiet conversations are going around stating that maybe more proactive work could have been done to set up a basic framework if a switch to online is required.

If we do have to go online, which could realistically happen, it will be a very challenging transition as we have only been in person for the past 16 months.

ISS and Schrole Split

As many know, ISS and Schrole have ended their partnership, returning to individual recruiting agencies. What do people think will be the best move for teachers based on this split?

Will ISS have better access to schools globally as they have the history? Will one be better regionally (Schrole in SEA?)? Would a combination of Search and one of these be most effective?

Curious to hear what educators and especially admin have to say on this topic.

What InterTeach described is much closer to how counsellors have been used in the schools I have been at.

Resume Services and ATS

Hi all,

Recently stumbled across a consulting company that specializes in international teacher recruitment. They offer interview prep, resume building and cover letter support amongst other services. One of the things they highlighted was the importance of your resume being ATS friendly. I'm not going to post the name or website of the company as I don't use them.

I had never heard of this and was wondering if it is me or if this is something that teachers aren't thinking about and should be? ATS is an automated service HRs would use to pre-screen resumes to pick out the ones that would get manual inspection. I can see this being done at larger, well known schools who get +50 applicants for a posting.

If this sort of tech is being used would a less traditional resume to try and stand out actually be a deterrent? Would it make sense to have two versions of a resume, one for fairs and one for online applications?

Curious to here what the collective ISR group thinks.

School is changing our contracts in the spring

Hi,

Hoping to get the collective thoughts from the ISR community on something that I have never experienced before in an international school.

My current school has came out in April and changed the contract for next year after teachers were required to give their intention for the following academic year in the fall. What are people's thoughts about this and/or have they experienced this before?

Contract changes had somethings better, somethings worse and somethings that will not impact me.

PE Teachers and schools that only locally hire

Like the post title alludes to, I am looking for information (regions or cities) where PE teachers are generally not an international hire position but a local hire position. I have asked for specific schools in the paid section of the Forum but no luck yet.

I know that a large school in Sao Paulo is a school that does not hire international teachers for PE in Elementary. I have also heard rumours of some schools in Switzerland following this pathway too.

If people have information on this it would be helpful as it would help filter regions/cities for teaching couples who have a PE partner and a non-PE teacher partner.

Thanks!
