Re: Reply

I prefer face to face interviews but the expense of flying somewhere is too high so I hope SA finds a good format for the virtual fairs and we can do that. I do prefer a dedicated event though where schools and teachers can do a lot of interviews in a short amount of time --a weekend-- but if that e...

Re: Reply

So what you're saying is the self reported savings potential of 5-8K for a single international teacher is in actuality even lower? You previously said those SA numbers "tend to be inflated" and "they have an interest in presenting their IS in as positive a light as possible". And the schools saying...

Re: Beginning Of The End for China Foreign Teachers?

When tensions between China and Japan ran high in 2012 over the Senkaku Island, some Japanese expats in China including two Japanese teachers were arrested. Sushi restaurant and car dealerships for Japanese brands were trashed despite often being owned by Chinese citizens. It was not a good time to ...

Re: If not in your home country, then where do you plan to retire?

Colleague just told me he bought a house in Patagonia for his retirement years. Too cold and isolated for me so I'll stick to my Thailand plan for now.

Re: If not in your home country, then where do you plan to retire?

The plan is Thailand but we'll decide closer to retirement age. Maybe by that time Thailand will not be an attractive option anymore. We'll need good medical care and relatively low cost of living. Access to a good airport is also a plus. Some good options mentioned in this thread and will look at t...

Re: British School Manila

Manila would be near the bottom on my list of cities. As has been mentioned already you likely won't save your desired sum.

Re: Your top 3/5/10 of favorite cities/countries to live

Addis Ababa? I looked into ICS a few years ago and talked to a few teachers that worked there. They all said positive things about the school and absolutely LOVED the country for the many great interesting travel opportunities there but none of them had anything very positive to say about the city A...

Re: Your top 3/5/10 of favorite cities/countries to live

Love this question, because there are some awesome schools in awful cities, and some great cities without a decent international school. Sadly there's not a lot of overlap between my list of preferred cities and my list if preferred schools. I would move my dream school to: 1. Lisbon 2. Tbilisi - fo...

Re: High pay package IS?

If she can teach Maths and Chinese, she would be an attractive candidate. Maths is always in demand, and schools always like it if you can teach a second subject. Some countries in Asia with a large Chinese speaking minority (or majority of course) they hire local teachers to teach Chinese but in ot...

Re: Advice for married couples working together

A couple I know both found that their life was too much dominated by the school they both worked at -they would discuss students at home all the time-, so they decided not to talk about school at home anymore. Instead, they would talk about school issues during their lunch together, or during their ...

Re: Stay or go for it?

A few years ago when I was working at a good tier 2 school in a less desirable location a teacher with exactly your profile was hired. The first choice had declined the school's offer, and their second choice couldn't be reached, so she got the job. Normally the school wouldn't hire anyone with only...
