Re: Search Job Fair Demise

What I don’t understand is why there is such a huge difference in the interview process at fairs (especially online ones). I’ve interviewed with 8 schools this season (not at fairs) and they’ve all had multiple rounds of interviews with different admins each interview, screening questions, and lengthy reference check processes. I don’t get how recruiters are magically able to apply the same rigorous recruiting standards and all accomplish this in the span of a couple days just because it’s a fair. I mean if recruiting can be accomplished in 3 days, couldn’t admin just schedule a weekend to complete all their recruiting regardless of attending a fair?

If this isn’t already a reference to Centner Academy in Miami, they’ve done that (among other things)

@sid @shadowjack Thanks for the reassurance. Wanna hire me? I’m a good teacher and I will stay at least 3 years, lol

Re: New to The Game...

@sid and other administrators— I’m curious to know how much the pandemic has shaped your view of 2 year stints— for example, someone with 3 | 6 | 2 | 2. The last three school years have been impacted by the pandemic, so is that something you would automatically consider before writing off that candidate as flighty?

Re: How do ISs compare to schools back home (for students)?

Way too broad to even begin to compare. Are you comparing Sidwell Friends to St. Dominics Portugal? In that case there is no question the domestic school is better. Are you comparing a public, underfunded title 1 school to ISKL? Then the international school is definitely better.

It’s worth noting that there 30 Search Associates schools in the US, plus hundreds more international schools in the US. 1,000s of US public schools offer IB, and the vast majority of IB diploma students are from schools in the US.

Re: What do you think about combining a Grade 9 and 10 English classes together?

There is no criteria written specifically for year 4, so in practice the schools I’ve worked at use the year 5 criteria for both years. Beyond that, there’s only minimal difference between the year 3 and year 5 criteria anyway. Take a look at criteria A for example:

In year 3 the student:
i. provides perceptive identification and explanation of the content, context, language, structure, technique and style, and explains the relationships among texts thoroughly
ii. provides perceptive identification and explanation of the effects of the creator’s choices on an audience
iii. gives detailed justification of opinions and ideas with a range of examples, and thorough explanations; uses accurate terminology
iv. perceptively compares and contrasts features within and between genres and texts.

In year 5 the student:
i. provides perceptive - of the content, context, language, structure, technique, style of text(s) and the relationship among texts
ii. perceptively - the effects of the creator’s choices on an audience
iii. gives detailed justification of opinions and ideas with a range of examples, and thorough explanations; uses accurate terminology
iv. perceptively compares and contrasts by making extensive connections in features across and within genres and texts.

Re: What do you think about combining a Grade 9 and 10 English classes together?

If they are MYP curriculum, it could make sense; the standards are the exact same for grade 9 and 10. Otherwise, it would take a lot of curriculum planning in order to do it in a meaningful way. Typically, the grade 10 students would read more complex material and write about more complex topics, and the grade 9 students would need direct instruction for things that the grade 10s should already be familiar with. Ultimately, it’s just a whole lot of work for that teacher beyond normal differentiation. It’s two separate classes in one space. If the school is in financial trouble and doing this out of necessity, then there’s your answer.

Re: Anyone have experience with being Jewish in the ME?

I’m interested to know people’s’ thoughts, predictions, or current experiences since Israel recently established diplomatic ties with the UAE and Bahrain. If you are there now, has there been antisemitic backlash and/or a rise in resentment of Jews and Israel in those countries due this? Does it seem like the people of these countries are receptive to the diplomatic agreements? If you were gazing into a crystal ball, do you think these countries will become more viable options for Jewish international teachers?

Re: and it continues

Curious to know more about this. Since the admin said it’s ok, was this SAS? I’ve also heard unconfirmed rumors that teachers are getting back into China now with letters of invitation; surely if this was SAS they’d have enough sway to get these letters, right?

Re: 2020 Income Taxes USA

Technically, yes. However, there is a clause with the foreign residence test that states that if you returned to the US for longer than 30 days due to civil unrest or natural disaster that your income would still be tax free. I’m hoping that this year the IRS will include covid in that clause.

Re: So, if the border isn't open...

I feel like this is the million dollar question right now. I wonder if schools even have a plan at this point. With so many teachers currently locked out of their countries, and many who have already resigned for next year, how can schools open in the fall if borders are still closed? Not to mention the many administrators expecting to start new posts next year. Some heads of school are not in their countries. Schools will be hobbled. I imagine all the scenarios you listed being used.

Re: China closed

@TheHuman I know you said it’s just rumors, but any more context on where those rumors are coming from?

What do you all think is going to happen to schools that cannot get new hires in the country until December and cannot get returning staff that is stuck back until mid September? Our school in Shanghai is already opening now.

I think the border could open as early as July (maybe even June). Of course it’s speculation. Beijing lifted its quarantine for domestic travelers and they are already starting to fast track special business visas for people from South Korea and Singapore. These seem like good signs.

Re: Inactive but Valid Certification

If you haven't spoken directly to the PA certifying organization, I'd highly recommend calling them. I thought I was in the same situation in my state (not PA), and I called. They let me know that the principal at my international school could 1) Sign off that I had done an equivalent amount of school embedded PD or 2) write a letter that my certification was a condition of employment and then I would have my certificate renewed. This information was nowhere online for me to find. Good luck!

Re: Years lived overseas in a non-teaching capacity - SA

@ThamesPirate (and everyone)-- I've wondered about highlighting travel in a cover letter, so this is interesting. What do you think about mentioning travel to the country that the school is in? For instance, when I've applied to schools in cities/countries I've travelled to, I list in my cover letter how much I enjoyed my time there and that I would love to live there. I finally stopped putting that in my cover letter, and the school I work for now is one where I left it off and was contacted almost immediately for interview after applying. But, in my interview the principal seemed happy to know I had been in the country before and had a frame of reference for what my life would be like. Am I overthinking this?

Re: Excess baggage?

In case anyone else references this thread in the future, I wanted to add on that I learned about baggage embargoes today. Airlines such as United and Delta (and probably others) have periods where flights to certain regions ban ANY excess baggage-- as in, you cannot even pay to bring more than 2 bags. These embargoes are listed on their websites. For Delta, the embargoed destinations are mostly in Latin American, plus Manila and Nigeria. Thankfully I am not affected, but this would be terrible to not know about for someone going to one of those destinations.
