Re: and it continues

Curious to know more about this. Since the admin said it’s ok, was this SAS? I’ve also heard unconfirmed rumors that teachers are getting back into China now with letters of invitation; surely if this was SAS they’d have enough sway to get these letters, right?

Re: 2020 Income Taxes USA

Technically, yes. However, there is a clause with the foreign residence test that states that if you returned to the US for longer than 30 days due to civil unrest or natural disaster that your income would still be tax free. I’m hoping that this year the IRS will include covid in that clause.

Re: So, if the border isn't open...

I feel like this is the million dollar question right now. I wonder if schools even have a plan at this point. With so many teachers currently locked out of their countries, and many who have already resigned for next year, how can schools open in the fall if borders are still closed? Not to mention...

Re: China closed

@TheHuman I know you said it’s just rumors, but any more context on where those rumors are coming from? What do you all think is going to happen to schools that cannot get new hires in the country until December and cannot get returning staff that is stuck back until mid September? Our school in Sha...

Re: Inactive but Valid Certification

If you haven't spoken directly to the PA certifying organization, I'd highly recommend calling them. I thought I was in the same situation in my state (not PA), and I called. They let me know that the principal at my international school could 1) Sign off that I had done an equivalent amount of scho...

Re: Years lived overseas in a non-teaching capacity - SA

@ThamesPirate (and everyone)-- I've wondered about highlighting travel in a cover letter, so this is interesting. What do you think about mentioning travel to the country that the school is in? For instance, when I've applied to schools in cities/countries I've travelled to, I list in my cover lette...

Re: Excess baggage?

In case anyone else references this thread in the future, I wanted to add on that I learned about baggage embargoes today. Airlines such as United and Delta (and probably others) have periods where flights to certain regions ban ANY excess baggage-- as in, you cannot even pay to bring more than 2 ba...

Re: Excess baggage?

Thanks @buffalofan and @PsyGuy! Glad to hear that you've never had (or heard of) bags having to be left behind-- that would be a nightmare scenario for me. If someone can get 49 bags on a plane, then hopefully there will be no issue with my 6 (+/-) large duffle bags. Thanks for the advice about insu...

Re: Excess baggage?

Thanks, Mamava. Wow-- 26 bags! I am really hoping to be booked on Delta since they seem to have the best baggage policy (if your bags don't fit on your flight, they will send them on the next one). To clarify, I'm not asking how many bags I should bring or what to pack. I'm just interested to know i...

Excess baggage?

Hi everyone, I've decided to move all my stuff via excess baggage rather than ship it this summer. I'm curious about others' experiences doing this. How many bags total (per individual) did you end up bringing? Did any airline ever measure your checked baggage (it looks like 158 cm/62 inch is the ma...

Re: Search "Verifying" references thru personal email addres

The verification depends on your associate. You could just ask your references for their new work email address and have it sent there. I used a retired administrator from a previous job and I’m pretty sure my associate just researched a little online to verify. But that was only one of my six refer...

Re: Getting a real job at a real school without experience

If living in Brazil is an option, you could try to get hired as a local hire (lower package) if any last minute vacancies pop up in the fall, or if there are any “runners” who abandon their posts mid year. You could also consider schools in Venezuela. Obviously there is a very difficult situation th...

Re: Feeling like I want to move my family back home

I'll add clarification for my insurance comment-- it looks alarmist reading it now. The school/district does usually pay a portion of the premium; my comment was more meant as an indictment of the system (even with a "good" plan, my out of pocket costs are high). Also, for families and spouses, be p...

Re: Feeling like I want to move my family back home

I’m sure that nothing compares to the feeling of being “home” and that is a strong pull. I’m on the opposite end of the situation (leaving the US) so I’ll share my two cents about what I won’t miss. Firstly, the pay may look reasonable on paper, but in reality it means keeping a very strict budget. ...
