Two applications for posts I am very qualified for.
Didn’t hear back from either.
One apparently went for someone with 0 IB experience but lots of industry experience. Disappointing as I don’t want their old job.
The other has advertised for the third(!) time this recruitment period. I have 8 years of IB experience and 4 years at a t1…don’t know what they’re hoping for.

PGCE or Masters of Ed for special needs?
Generally do you think schools would consider someone is with a Masters of Education instead of a PGCE for a learning support teacher (teacher, not assistant).

Re: Travelling to a country in lockdown
Depends on how well you'd cope with isolation.
I moved to mere 'lockdown' and it was hellish. Met 0 new people, saw 0 new places, wasn't settled for about 7 or 8 months. Still sort of hate things here.

Open University or Online degree from 'regular' UK university?
A friend is looking into getting into teaching, but their degree is from a university in indonesia and we haven't been able to get it recognised.
What would be more appealing to an IS? Initially I was convinced that the OU was the way to go, but have heard some locals in my current country sniff at it (whereas they'd fawn over someone with a degree from Oxford Brookes).
Some lower tier UK universities are offering online degrees now (e.g. Derby).
So which one do you think would go down better at an IS? Open University or a not so good 'University of ....'? We're targeting primary schools.
Thanks!
N.B. please also let me know if you think tier 1/2 would make a difference, friend would be working in Asia and is ethnically Asian, we all know how well that works out in IE...

PGCEi alternatives?
Hi All
I've read a bit about tier 1 and possibly tier 2 schools refusing to hire PGCEi holders. Are there any qualifications that can be completed internationally and are as respected as those complete domestically in canada/the usa/aus etc?
Also I think you can get QTS internationally if the school agree to support it? Is this correct?
Thanks!

Re: Professor Career Changer
Hey
Late to the ., but had a colleague in my first school who was in the same situation as you.
She jumped straight into teaching HS at a British independent school. They very much valued her phd, many staff there also had one. The school didn't require a certificate, but supported people to do one (in that they signed off on things, for some they paid for the qualification on the condition you worked there for x years after), so after a year you get your PGCE, then after another year your QTS.
The school taught both IB and IGCSE, so sliding into teaching in Asia/the middle east was extremely easy.
Pay was *just* enough for a family, but most (all?) had working spouses. Subsidised housing and free food was provided. Without this, there is no way that you could have had a non working spouse if you were at the bottom of the pay scale (you got 1 extra point for a masters, 2 for a phd)
I'd highly recommend going down this route, though it would require a lot of work. I'd start by contacting UK independent boarding (for the housing) schools that teach IB.
Best of luck!

Re: High pay package IS?
Late to the . but a lot of independent british schools (not IB, A level etc.) will pay a decent salary for a chinese teacher, certified or not. These will sometimes come with benefits e.g. housing, or extra pay if you as a couple are willing to be house parents.

Just go to a lower tier IS. If you have good qualifications and experience, the lower down ones with aspirations will take you.
My last school hired a guy against my advice, he was known in our subject community as super flaky, but I wasn't on great terms with management, so they chose not to listen. Lo and behold, he didn't show at the beginning of term, and the guys that I'd recommended have already taken up posts.

Re: thai police clearance cert
Update: things have changed. I ran around chasing bits of paper. Turns out I didn't need anything other than my passport and a photocopy of the photo page/stamp.
They did everything else there, was very easy and took about 30 mins.
Still don't know what I need it for though!

thai police clearance cert
Does anyone here have info on it?
The links on their website are broken and the numbers are out of service/not being picked up
School have given me an english list but the translation is terrible and the staff dont know anything.
It says I need an embassy request letter but doesn't say what that letter needs to contain, it has different categories (marriage, education, work etc.) but nothing for leaving the country
I don't even know why I need it. My next job hasn't requested it.
Edit: turns out the english list of docs is incorrect. you don't need most of them. just passport, wp and some forms. They can do the rest there. Still don't know why I need it though!

Re: Getting Thai Tax Refund
Hi All
Thanks for the replies. School flat out said no so I'm going to hire someone.
Apparently the schools can do it easily, just choose not to. Or finance do it on the sly and then keep it for themselves.
So yeah, external company seems to be the way to go.

Re: Schools refunding tuition fees
Our board also said no. Explained to parents that if they refunded tuition fees there wouldn't be a school for their kids to attend next year. Also pointed out that our online tuition is far more intensive than what other schools are doing in the area (we do group video chats for each lesson, most places are just giving them online tasks)
Instead, they decided not to raise fees next year.
