Re: Taking a year out

It shouldn’t be a problem at all. I’m in that situation this year. I’ve taken the year off to take care of my children and my husband and I were applying and interviewing for new schools. We had over 10 interviews and only one school even brought it up in the interview, and definitely not in a negative way.

Re: International Schools and Divorce

Interesting topic to pose here. My husband and I met at an international School and are both from the states. We have talked many times about how our relationship might be if we were to be teaching in the US. We both feel teaching in the US would cause more stress on our relationship because we find teaching internationally to be far less stressful. In addition we enjoy the fact that we see each other periodically throughout the day and our children get to go to school where we work. Back in the US, we’d be dealing with expensive child care, most likely working at different schools, more bills and all the stresses of teaching in a IS public school nowadays. I’m not saying we would have marital problems we returned but we both feel teaching and living abroad works well for our marriage.

Re: UNI Fair

I went to the UNI fair straight out if teacher’s college, and had a great experience. It is the perfect fair for a new teacher. No, you’re lot going to land an amazing tier 1 school, but who cares?! Now is the time to get your feet wet and work your way up to that. I went in 2007, but have met many teachers since then who landed there first job at that fair. There are quite a few Latin American schools that attend that fair. I went with five other newly certified teachers and we all had at least two job offers we were happy with. Go with an open mind, yet do your research, and you’ll have a great time!
