Re: Cheap and easy (online) Masters?

Which country is your friend from? That will make a big difference. If she's Australian I have a recommendation. But if she's not Australian it won't be cheap.

Re: Search technicality

As stated, no. I have changed mine multiple times. The only catch is that they noticed and put my application into "hibernation" which means schools can't see me. But when I asked nicely they changed some setting so that I can search/see schools they just can't see me at this point. And they did say that if I found a school who I wanted to be able to see my application then I could let them know and they'd make it so the school could see it.

Re: Red flags or paranoia?

5 years in 2 schools certainly doesn't sound undesirable but it doesn't make you highly experienced either. Especially if that's your total teaching experience rather than international experience (I don't know what DS means so I wasn't sure where you'd been working).

I'm a bit confused by who you talked to. Was it the director or the IB coordinator? Or are they the same person? I'd certainly be wary of a school that mixed those two roles. Either way if it's a big school I wouldn't be shocked if the director didn't know the details of your teaching specifics (contact hours per grade) but I'd find it odd that you were interviewing with the director before the principal so the whole set up seems a little strange (most directors let their principals do the initial weeding out of candidates in my experience).

It's possible the these are red flags but it's also possible that things are being done in a bit of a strange order due to it being the summer break and people being hard to contact etc.

The line about "looking for someone who's extraordinary" is a bit on the pretentious side!

Re: Job offer red flags

Hmmm.

It was pretty generous of you to accept based on those details.

But having said that, in my experience of international schools (three so far, all of the excellent places to work) a week is a very short time to wait. So don't abandon all hope. But, having said that I'd feel free to send a follow up email letting them know that you'd like confirmation that your acceptance had been noted so that you can feel assured you are out of the job hunt.

I don't think I've ever got a contract until months after I accepted a job so I wouldn't get hung up on that but I would want a lot more information about the offer in writing.

That guy with the dragon

Hi all,

Looking for any information on the school in Quilmes, Argentina? Owned by that guy who killed the dragon.

The reviews on ISR are pretty damming, but just wondering if there's anyone with recent experience of working there who could give me a little more background.

Thanks.

Re: Slower start to recruiting?

I actually feel like I'm seeing less from Asia than in the past but it's still early...

Interesting that others feel otherwise (especially as I'm maths as well). I guess some of it is just luck. Last time I changed jobs (5 years ago) the number of maths jobs were insane and it seemed hardly anyone was competing for them, maybe that was just an exceptionally big year for maths (seriously, I went to the Bangkok fair and nearly drowned in interviews including some that I was clearly not qualified for - I asked some recruiters why and they told me there were just hardly any good maths candidates at the fair that year).

Re: Schools on roughly a Jan - Dec school year

It's mainly South American schools I'm interested in. I'm perfectly happy with a March start. I've found a few S. American schools that have a roughly calendar year but I'm just putting this post out in case anyone throws some names out that I haven't heard of. The ones I've come across are names people have given me and then I've gone and looked them up - I haven't found any easy way to track down schools on that schedule.

Re: ISS or Search if Can't make Job Fair?

I've never used ISS but I find the Search database worth every penny... Personally I don't go to job fairs, I don't see it as worth the money (although if I had less experience I'd be more likely to consider it). Went once, fascinating experience but considering the cost (not of the fair, of the time off, flights, accommodation etc) I just don't think it was worth it. I got offered lots of jobs there but ended up choosing a job with a school that wasn't at the fair anyway (and it turned out to be a great choice).

So every job I've had I've got without a job fair (but with using the Search database).

Schools on roughly a Jan - Dec school year

Hi All,

For various reasons I've decided I really want to try and get a job in a school that runs on a roughly Jan - Dec school year. I've got a few questions that I'd love answered if anyone has information.

1. Please let me know any international schools that you know of that run on this schedule. I've got a few on my list already but the more I have to research the better. (Please note, in lines with the forum rules I'm not asking for an evaluation of the schools, just a list).

2. Is anyone familiar with when the recruiting cycle for these schools runs? So for example, right now is the start of recruiting for August 2018. Anyone got information on when I could expect to see jobs advertised for starts around Jan 2019.

Thanks!
