Teaching to Admin back to Teaching?

Seeking the wisdom of the hive mind on my current situation. As a seasoned teacher with a rich background in both the USA and internationally, I made the leap back to the States for an administrative role. While I'm enjoying the work, the allure of my past life abroad tugs at me. Despite applying for various positions through SEARCH, the response has been rather quiet. My focus is mainly in Asia and I would consider China if it was a T1 city.

Scenario 1 = Keep applying for admin jobs and wait out some positions. Perhaps late Winter / Spring might yield better results for someone with not as much admin experience.

Scenario 2 = Head back into the classroom and apply at solid T1 schools. My teaching experience was strong and I have no reservations about getting interviews/offers in my field for teaching roles. If I obtained a role like this, I would like to work my way up the ladder but realize that might not work for a variety of reasons.

Let me know your thoughts as I bounce some ideas around. Cheers to those looking for their next roles for 24/25!

Re: Reapplying at a school I previously turned down

I would agree with the poster above. It is an asset but only how you turned it down. Definitely point it out and be upfront in your cover letter to them... something like "A few years ago I was afforded an opportunity to work at your school by X admin and chose to go a different direction due to my life's circumstance at the time. However, since then, I realize how much I loved X school and really would love an opportunity to talk about X position"

Swing it in a positive light and you are golden... that is if you turned it down in a professional way.

This is just how I would go about it which might not be how everyone would FYI

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

BKK has two fairs. One occurs in November and is coined the "Leadership Fair" (This is on the SEARCH website). The teacher BKK fair occurs in January and is a trifecta of "super" fairs. You can research until your eyes pop out of your head about everyone's opinion on these fairs. Ultimately, I and several fellow (not Psyguy) teachers here say it is about 2 things: 1. How close are you to BKK-LON-BOS and 2. How many of the school/area you wish to work/live at are at the fair.

The thing is unless you blow a recruiter out of the water, they probably are hesitant at hiring at BKK since LON/BOS happen after and they know they have a pool of candidates they will be interviewing there as well. BKK/LON are probably the most competitive and those "Tier 1" schools will probably be at both BKK/LON. The difference is the Tier 2s vary so if you want a better shot at working in Asia BKK is probably a good choice while LON attracts smaller Tier 2 schools due to proximity.

If I were you, hit up the website and see the schools attending. No use in going to a fair with 3 schools you wish to work at rather than perhaps 10 at another.

Bangkok Leadership Fair

Just curious about everyone's perspective of this fair. I would like to hear people who have actually been as a candidate or even a recruiter if they exist on the board. Is this worth the time if you are trying to make your break into entry-level admin?

I am contemplating going to this fair or perhaps the BKK/London fair in January as I know both those fairs are super fairs. I am looking for entry admin jobs.

Returning to the USA after time abroad

Curious to know if anyone has had experience returning back to the USA after being abroad for some time. How did the schools you applied for react to your experience? Did they understand what an international school is/does? Did you feel like you stood out more compared to local candidates?

I have been in conversation with a few schools systems, not to return, but rather they are old friends interested in what exactly I am doing. Even though I say I am an international teacher, they assume it is ESL. After describing what I do and where I work, they usually say that is great. I am fortunate enough to work at a really good school that is well known around the world. This school is one of those schools at fairs people are lined up for miles for so no question I am not at a tier 3 school... So I know I come in with a solid background of prior work experience and arguably more diversity in my profession compared to local hires in the USA.

Special Ed/Learning Support Professional Development

Hello!

Long time lurker here who has finally made the break into IT! I have a handful of teaching year from the USA under my belt but not much PD to go with it. I am currently working in an Asian IS and have a generous PD supplement that goes with my contract. I was curious what the forums suggestions are for PD in reference to Special Education in an IT setting. PD referencing to conferences/seminars to attend or even classes to take to supplement my professional resume to better serve my school.

Thanks in advance!
