I know I could've found most of the books online but I didn't want to have to rebuy them or have to convince the school to buy them. Also, some of them I received at professional development classes and couldn't be found online or electronically.

I don't know if it makes a difference or not but I teach SWD and I wasn't sure what resources would be available once I got there. There are some things I use at least once a week; they wouldn't just collect dust on a shelf.

I decided to mail them anyway. I would rather be prepared than to have to scramble, looking for things that would work for me.

Bring professional resources to int'l teaching job?

I'll start my first international teaching job in August and in all of my packing, I'm wondering if I need to save room for professional resources (workbooks, checklists) I've collected over the years. Some of them, I think, are absolutely necessary but the school may already have some resources I could use.

Should I spend the money/effort to make sure I have them so I'm not stuck without what I'm accustomed to using?

Should I just say to heck with it and just acquire new things when I get there?

I used the TIE website as I didn't have the 200+ to spend on Search. I was contacted by a few not so great schools through TIE but I ended up getting a job offer from a decent school who used the TIE website to find me. I'll start in August so I've yet to see if it was money well spent :)

I can't help you with this, but (sorry to slightly hijack) my family and I are off to Shanghai in August. Since you have experience there, do you have any words of wisdom for us? This will be our first international post.
Whatever you do, do not choose Yew Chung. It's run by a group whose main focus in on making money. They treat their staff very unprofessionally, so I do not recommend them at all. I am currently at one of their schools and all the western staff have left since I arrived three years ago. I am joining them in June.
At which campus are you working? Is it specific to one campus or is it all YCIS schools?

Also, what is the Moral Education department?

About how much is the housing allowance at UWC? Can either of you say or give a general idea?

I get the instant job notifications and I'm fairly sure it e-mails me the same time it's updated on their site. So far, I've noticed that I get the notifications even before the school's update their websites with the job openings.

Thanks for responding, wrldtrvlr123. Here are more questions for you, since you responded:

Since you're currently teaching sped internationally, what does your typical day look like?

Do you have your own classroom and you teach resource classes or do you go into a gen. ed. teacher's room for all subjects (i.e. collaborative/mainstream/inclusion) or is it a combination of both?

Do you have to do formal testing with students to determine if they're eligible for special ed services?

Is there anything special that international schools are looking for in a special ed teacher that would give me an advantage over the other special ed teachers?

About how long did it take you to get an international job once you started applying?

If you'd prefer, you can e-mail me your answers: stockingblue@yahoo.com

Thanks!!!

Special education teacher-need advice

I'm currently a resource teacher in a middle school. I've taught collaborative (inclusion) and resource in all subject areas in grades 6-8 for eight years and I also taught at a K-12 school for one year. I have a Bachelor's in collab K-6 and Master's in integrating technology. I have a non-teaching spouse and a two year old; what are my chances of finding a job overseas? My husband and I have narrowed down our choice areas to eastern Europe and east Asia.

I would really love the advice of special education (learning support, student support) teachers currently teaching at international schools. Where have you taught? What have your experieces been (both positive and negative)?

Also, my husband doesn't have a degree but he's considering getting a paraprofessional certificate so that he could be a teaching assistant. Would that even be worth it? Would that make us more marketable?

Thanks in advance for any help!
