Re: Is Teach-now or Teacher Ready worth the time or money?

I think it's worth it. It is an alternative route, but it ends in a US state certification just like any other teacher. You need a certification to be considered for a worthwhile job. My husband had a similar situation and has joined Teach Now- he was never a teacher and is teaching PE without any credentials at my school. After joining (and proving his talent as a teacher), he has been offered a position in his subject area for next year. He does not have a background in education and that didn't matter when joining Teach Now. The difference as far as jobs is that he has both an undergraduate degree and a masters degree in his subject area, which is apparently an area hard to find teachers in. So, once he gets that certification and works for a couple years in his new role, I think he'll be quite marketable, which makes it good news for us as a teaching couple. But, without the certification, many schools wouldn't even consider you a candidate, which is why I think it's so important. I don't necessarily think he'll list Teach Now on his resume- what will be on there is his US certification in the subject area.

Re: Some questions about Teach-Now for those in the know

Also, for Teacher Ready in FL, you have to prove residence and a teaching position in the state of FL or they won't issue you the professional certificate. It says this on their website. https://www.teacherready.org/admissions ... s-dates-3/

So if they don't issue you a teaching certificate, there's not much point to that.

Re: Some questions about Teach-Now for those in the know

I know this is an old post, but maybe someone will see it. What do you mean that in CT you just have to show up and take the test? I'm certified in K-6 Elementary and 7-12 Business in CT and you have to do more than just show up for a test.... you have to complete an educator preparation program and/or coursework for what you're trying to get certified in ( you have to see what you need for that specific area). CT isn't an easy state to get certified in. Here are the guidelines right off their site. http://www.sde.ct.gov/sde/lib/sde/pdf/c ... 1109aw.pdf

Re: Library Certification

I have a Masters in Teaching and I'm currently working on a Masters in Library and Information Science (great program online). However, I'm working on the program part-time because I teach (obviously), so I don't plan on being done for some years to come. In the meantime, I wanted to be certified for library, at least. I did that through the State of Florida (my other certs are in Connecticut). All I had to do was take and pass the Pearson test for Florida Educational Media Specialist, apply and I got a letter saying I was approved for the professional certificate (5 year renewable). I have to get fingerprinted when I go home over break to get the actual certificate issued, but it was that easy be approved for it. Just be aware, I don't know if it's guaranteed that you'll get a professional certificate or a temporary one. When I called the certification office beforehand, they basically said they would review my credentials and see. Don't know if I was lucky or the fact that I was already certified with a Masters degree helped. You could always give it a shot.

My problem is, I am not sure how I'll land a job without any previous library experience, even with the certification and the fact I'm working on my masters. Hoping to work in a library over summer to get a bit of experience.
