Re: Spring break dates changed because of coronavirus

Of course you have the right to be upset. There is much to be upset about given the current circumstances. The country where I am living, Georgia, just announced they are closing the borders to foreigners for two weeks starting two days from now. However, at this point I think we all know this very ...

Re: Director Invited me Out - Help!

Since you are asking I assume there is part of you who wants to go. It’s a matter of how much caution you can take. Is this a purely social gathering? If yes, I would ask if I could bring a friend with me if I felt the need for caution. A male friend if I really wanted to dampen potential romantic e...

Re: China People - What Does Online Learning Look Like for You Right Now?

I’m in Tbilisi and all schools have been shut down for at least two weeks. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on how to do high school math assessments at least semi-effectively? My school does not have any platforms that support this directly and I am having a hard time thinking of a way to...

What about free tuition for children? That could be a deal breaker for many families if that becomes taxable given the insane tuition many schools charge.

Re: Search, China, and Reneging

I'm also set to move to China in August. As you can expect I am closely monitoring the situation. I'm not ready to pull the plug yet as the situation is currently expected to run its course over a period of six months. At this time as a single, I am willing to take a wait and see approach. Right now...

Re: International vs Bilingual school in China

I currently work at a quality school as a math teacher, and while you can transfer there is no guarantee you can get what you want. I have more experience than you and have several years in the system, but was not offered a position at an IB school last year when I put in for a transfer. There are o...

Re: Current 2019 list of countries with best savings potenti

@Zagreb77 Sure! I should point out that targeting particular schools within the QSI network is quite difficult. Since there is a transfer system between schools that happens prior to most hiring the relatively popular schools (in which Tbilisi is included) are tough are get, and most external hires ...

Re: Current 2019 list of countries with best savings potenti

What do you define as good savings? Is it a percentage of salary or just total amount saved? How much? Right now I am saving ~50% of my salary in Tbilisi ($2000 per month go straight to my investment accounts) while still eating out regularly and traveling. A very solid balance of lifestyle and cost...

Re: AIS GUANGHZOU - SALARY

Current Search numbers show $55K for BA+4 and $66K for MA+8. These figures are not net and they state 16% taxes with them claiming the same savings amount as noted before. Salaries in China seem to be trending up, and I recently accepted a position at a school in the Guangdong region for $70k so the...

Re: Pensions: Sweden vs Denmark vs Finland vs Norway vs Germ

Interesting. I have a follow-up question then. If it's more about public healthcare than the pension, what does it take to have access in most western European countries? Is it like Medicare where you need a certain amount of time in system as a taxpayer or is it residency-based?

Re: Pensions: Sweden vs Denmark vs Finland vs Norway vs Germ

Out of curiosity do any of these places offer a pension of more than a few hundred USD for a foreign teacher who arrives in their 50s and works for ~15 years? If not, what is the allure? I could see it for a teacher who already has their financial ducks in a row and wanted to retire in relative styl...

Re: Retirement and savings for international teachers?

I use a taxable fund at Schwab and put my savings in ETF index funds. The reality is most schools don't offer formal retirement plans (although there are exceptions) and if you claim the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (and have no other taxable income) you don't qualify to invest in IRAs in most si...

Savings Potential in Shenzhen

I recently received a verbal job offer in Shenzhen and wanted to check with the community to see what my savings potential could be. I’m esstimating my after tax income including bonuses would be around $70,000. The offer includes standard benefits like housing (studio is free but I might upgrade to...
