Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

The moral of the story is that you need to directly contact your local Exit-Entry Bureau and SAFEA office to find out exactly what applies to you and what you need to do. There is so much misinformation online and enough regional variation that you could find yourself in some serious hot water if yo...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

Since I am moving to the region, and I am curious about how this all works, I actually called the Entry and Exit Administration Office of the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau and they confirmed what I thought. They stated that if you lose your job without another lined up you need to apply for a Sta...

See here: http://www.gz.gov.cn/guangzhouinternational/residents/entryexitandresidenceprocedures/ One relevant line: "4. Foreign nationals who are terminating their studies or employment in Guangzhou for any reason should surrender their residence permit and obtain the relevant visa immediately." Obv...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

By official law once a work permit is canceled the residence permit should be canceled in 10 days. However, like many things in China enforcement is lax and can vary from province to province. This results in many different interpretations but 30 days is often given as an acceptable time frame even ...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

The residence permit is also tied to your work permit. If you quit your job you have 30 days to transfer your residence permit and get a new work permit from your new employer or get a tourist visa (which may not even be an option now) if you want to stay in country. There is also a 30-day humanitar...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

OP, you might be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire on this one. There is no guarantee the potential new school will stick to their word, on classes or housing or otherwise, either. Keep in mind they are knowingly and willingly poaching you from another school in a time of crisis. This spea...

Re: Schools that take teachers with no teaching cert

There is no shortage of these schools in China many of which pay reasonably well too. Not the top tier ones of course but if you don’t mind working with a 100% Chinese student population this is an option. The pandemic is making everything uncertain and particularly when it comes to China, but it st...

The IRS is providing a waiver this year for the FEIE for you which you probably qualify.

Re: How competitive would I be?

Taiwan is odd in that there are really no tier 2 schools which are the best fit for you right now. You could apply to the top ones but the competition will be fierce even if there are openings. Are mainland schools completely out of the question? You could almost certainly pick up a tier 2 school po...

Re: Taxes/Stimulus Checks/David Wisdom

I filed 2019 two weeks ago and used my mail forwarding address in the US. The site previously said there was an error but now says it will mail my check on May 1st. It did not give me an option to add my bank information sadly, so I hope I will be able to remotely deposit the check with my US bankin...

Re: Spring break dates changed because of coronavirus

Of course you have the right to be upset. There is much to be upset about given the current circumstances. The country where I am living, Georgia, just announced they are closing the borders to foreigners for two weeks starting two days from now. However, at this point I think we all know this very ...

Re: Director Invited me Out - Help!

Since you are asking I assume there is part of you who wants to go. It’s a matter of how much caution you can take. Is this a purely social gathering? If yes, I would ask if I could bring a friend with me if I felt the need for caution. A male friend if I really wanted to dampen potential romantic e...

Re: China People - What Does Online Learning Look Like for You Right Now?

I’m in Tbilisi and all schools have been shut down for at least two weeks. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on how to do high school math assessments at least semi-effectively? My school does not have any platforms that support this directly and I am having a hard time thinking of a way to...
