Re: Have you ever been evacuated?

I’ve never been evacuated but I participated in several practice sessions hosted by the embassy in a couple different countries. (Does this still happen? I can’t remember hearing about any of these in over 15 years.) We were told we’d have limited notice and have to get ourselves to the rally point ...

Re: Your top 3/5/10 of favorite cities/countries to live

Never even been in the country. I hear it’s nice and hope to visit someday. But it’s not on my favorites list.

Re: Your top 3/5/10 of favorite cities/countries to live

No one's mentioned my number 1 yet, and I will be keeping it to myself. Selfish, but I want it to be just as golden when I am ready to move there permanently.

Re: How do you get to work?

Everything from a 30 minute drive each way, in countries requiring two cars per family, to walking 2 minutes across the campus.

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

Why do you keep insisting I'm writing about the school? It is the government that can do all this, as I clearly wrote repeatedly. The school simply tells the government about the situation. And in most countries, the school/employer is actually required to inform the government if a foreign worker q...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

This whole thing is making me laugh. Picture the equivalent situation in the UK, the US, or anywhere really. A foreigner’s right to live and work in the UK is under review. The foreigner is asked to participate in the process but instead hides under their blanket. The inexorable forces of government...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

It’s not the IS that has the power, it’s the government. They issue and cancel in their system. And they won’t be stopped by a little thing like a foreigner playing “hide the passport”. The school will inform the government that the person is no longer employed and has absconded with their passport....

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

Interesting theory, but the IS doesn’t need your passport to cancel your visa. That’s the normal route, but it’s not required. Cancellation happens with the stroke of a key on a computer. It is meant to be also recorded in the passport, but the cancellation happens regardless. It does give me intere...

Re: US equivalent bachelor's degree/Teaching License

There will be more to it than that, I expect. Probably about the number and type of courses. The equivalency agency should be able to explain.

Re: Advice for married couples working together

Enjoy the benefits of working with your favorite person in the world. Have lunch together daily - millions of lovey-dovey couples the world round would envy you for your luck! Definitely keep a dose of professionalism, as mentioned above. The most PDA I've ever seen is an occasional handhold on the ...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

Clearly PG and I disagree, and there’s no point getting into the nitty gritty there. PG doesn’t argue in the academic sense, he fights in the playground sense. Anyway, what is worth mentioning to you is to look at your contract and labor law carefully. Don’t presume an extra class is a broken contra...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

I do have sympathy for you, absolutely. This isn’t what any of us signed up for, not even close. Everyone at my school, me included, has excellent cause to say “not what I signed up for”. We’re all pushed to the limit. Things are gradually improving for us, but these first weeks have been rough. Pro...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

I don’t think that’s going to pass muster. There might not be an option for resigning mid contract. That would explain why it’s not in the handbook- it doesn’t exist. It doesn’t at my current school, though our handbook does have a line about teachers sometimes having emerging life situations that r...

Re: How to resign and transfer my visa?

It’s probably in the staff handbook or HR manual, both of which should be freely available to all staff. Try asking for those docs, or whatever your school calls them, rather than asking your specific question and raising flags too early. But I wouldn’t be too hopeful. Most schools don’t offer you t...
