Who is actively looking?

What's the take on this hiring season? It seems to be moving really slowly vs previous years(pre-Covid). People I know have been hot commodities in the past and are barely getting responses. What's the deal?

AIS GUANGHZOU - SALARY

I used to work in Guangzhou but not at the American International School. Not looking for a review of the school but does anyone know anything about salary? Do you have to pay taxes? I know someone there but I haven't been able to get in touch with them.

Re: Ghosted by School?

I didn't make them wait for anything. She legitimately had other duties. When we interviewed people in my department some asked us to wait more than 4 days. He said this week. She gave him an answer of this week but I will be sure to share your opinion.

Ghosted by School?

Hello All,

I'm asking for a friend because I'm not experienced enough in international school hiring. A school reached out to her asking to set up sometime during the week to interview. She responded with a yes and gave them a day 4 days later and asked if that would work. She explained that she had work duties that would cause her to work late and that is why she is asking for any time after that date. It's been two days and the school hasn't responded to set up the interview. I told her she should at least reach out again by email. She's thinking the school doesn't want to interview her anymore and just decided not to respond.

Thoughts?

Re: Chronic pain in China

Umm.. the Consulate hasn't been located on Shamian Island in almost 10 years and the pharmacies don't really cater to expats especially with that class of medication. Anyway, check with United Family Healthcare. The majority of staff are Westerners and are more inclined to prescribe meds. Most expats get their meds there and if they don't have it will go to HK. If you do have to go to HK the cost is less than 50 USD roundtrip by train (cheaper by bus). We often go in the morning and come back later that evening.

Not coming back to read responses- I have no interest in arguing what I know to be true. Just wanted to share some actual facts from someone who lives here and deals with people needing prescriptions regularly.

China did not request my transcripts. Just my degree.

Re: Looking for Feedback

Do you have a facebook account? There are a few groups on there where Black teachers discuss their experiences. MANY of them are in the Middle East and they have a group specific to that region.

Re: First time working overseas (china) hiring process?

Currently going through this process. Everything said above is correct except - you can walk into the Embassy and do the process yourself. So far I haven't had any issues (many people have). I have debated using a service.

The HR department has been really good. Upon receiving my contract they emailed me immediately with due dates for documents and a document detailing the process for document authentication and obtaining the Visa. And absolutely ask for clarification. As Eion Padraig said there may be language issues that can completely change what your school is attempting to communicate.

Re: Asking for References from Current Teachers

In my most recent interview, after my first interview with the principal I spoke with the other person in my department. After that I spoke with a teacher experiencing their 1st year at the school. The principal then emailed me asking if I wanted to speak with other teachers/staff members. I did. I also requested to speak with a specific teacher (for a certain reason). After that I had my second interview with the principal. Then I interviewed with the director and discussed contract, etc. They never stalled on my requests and always sent contact info immediately. They were very encouraging about me speaking to other staff members.

Nice, Shawanda! I was hoping to get a school in West Africa but....didn't happen. Like helloiswill, I accepted a position in China. Congrats everyone!

Guangzhou

Would anyone like to share thoughts/experiences of living and working in Guangzhou? I have researched A LOT but would like to hear the good, the bad, and especially the ugly. This would be my first IT post. I am a single (but not at all looking for information about dating) Black woman.

Re: All Alone Out Here?

I received an email from what has been mentioned as a Tier 1 school several times on here. I had my first interview with them tonight and it went well. They contacted me. I was surprised because I heard schools don't do that.

I'm on Search also. I haven't applied to that many schools. Maybe 5 at this point. I will apply to a few more tomorrow. I'm somewhat but not extremely selective. One school responded, one removed the post and I haven't heard from the others.

My associate had been great so far. Not overbearing, but doesn't ignore me. Sends emails with suggestions and information. Provided information about the school I interviewed with although the information was nothing I hadn't anyway known from my research.

At this point I'm trying to breathe and be patient.
