US Parent Teaching Abroad/ In-State Tuition

Have any teachers from the US, sent a child back to the US for college and received in-state tuition.

Checking the required factors for Pennsylvania there are 3 factors they consider for in-state tuition:

1. Parent has a driver's license in that state: Check
2. Parent pays state taxes: Check
3. Parent has a property deed in their name or a lease agreement for at least a year within the state: I don't have this one, but my parents live in Pennsylvania
Thinking about how to get around this last one, or if anyone has any experience with this. Thanks.

Inactive but Valid Certification

If my Pennsylvania certification goes Inactive, would the better international schools care? The certification would still be Valid, it would just be Inactive. In PA, the only way you can get hours toward reactivation is if you take specified courses in PA or certain college credits. Just curious if that is something I absolutely need to do in order to be considered at some of these higher tier schools. (I am certified in Math and currently teach AP Calc and Pre-calc in Bangkok)

Thanks. Any help anyone can give is appreciated.

Re: Search or Not?

An official paper with raised logo of the school was what was needed as form of recommendation for a hard copy in the past. Because of location, It'd be much easier to just have an email sent to me from a previous school back in the US, rather than an official document mailed to me across the world. Is an email that is printed out acceptable for a recommendation letter?

Re: Search or Not?

I'd prefer to just have my requests added and not rejoin, but we will see...

I know that some schools back in the U.S. ask for hard copies of references, but it seems that most International schools just want contact information of previous employers for applications or use a system such as Search. Is it still worth it to ask for actual physical copies of recommendations? Do many International Schools still look at hard copies?

Search or Not?

If I plan on staying in the same city for my next teaching assignment is it really worth signing up for Search Associates again?

I already have references on Search and may use it in the future, but at least for the next two years I will try to get a job in the same city, even if that means taking a year teaching ESL. However, I don't want to lose the references at the school I'm at.

Do administrators mind if you contact them two years later and ask them for a Search reference even though I won't be fresh in their mind? I probably should just pay the few hundred bucks and get the references upon leaving and Search might give me more opportunities in my city, but was looking for any suggestions.

Thanks.

Re: Loan Forgiveness?

Thank you Marieh. Does it have to be an "American" International School, or can it be any school that is non-profit. I've heard different answers from different representatives from fedloans, so I was hoping for some clarification.

Loan Forgiveness?

I know there has been some discussion on this site about this, but I'm not sure about this particular question. In the US if you teach at a public school for 10 years on a pay-as-you-earn plan you can have your loans forgiven. Is this possible if you teach at a non-profit "American" International School?

Also, are there many International Schools that teach an AP curriculum besides the specifically listed "American" schools?

Re: Leaving IT for DODEA

How does the retirement for DODEA compare to your typical public school in the US or a typical IT in Europe? Is it still normal to have to teach 25+ years to get a nice pension from DODEA?

Leaving IT for DODEA

I'm new to IT, but as a future goal would love to work for the DODEA. From what I read they do their hiring from June to October normally. How do you join them and not screw over the current school that you're at and have to possibly pay a few months salary to get out of your contract? Am I missing something here?

China Retirement

I was curious about retirement if you work in China for 10 years. If I taught in China for 10 years and left to another country would I receive some sort of retirement money/month when I became the age that I can collect, which I believe is 60 now. I'm sure it won't be much, but still curious? Thanks

Re: Medical Insurance for a Month?

Thanks for your answer, I appreciate it. I figure the car insurance won't be difficult, but the medical seems like a pain and costly.
