Getting flights home this summer for departing teachers?

Hello,

I am at a school in Southeast Asia and will be departing at the end of this year. The US Embassy in our Country says on their website basically US Citizens should get out now or be prepared to be stuck for the foreseeable future. I guess my concern is that if I can't get out this summer I also won't have any support in my current country after my contract ends. How are other departing teachers feeling? Are you worried it will be hard to get out this summer?

On another note, I feel the job I accepted for next year is pretty precarious now. I hope not, I really want to go to that school, but I just don't know right now.

Thanks!

What about Vietnam?

I'm wondering about lifestyle and salary/housing allowance in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. What would be a decent salary/housing allowance there? How is the life with young children?

Thanks!

Bangkok vs. Shanghai with a family

Hello, I am wondering about your thoughts on Bangkok vs. Shanghai for a family with two young children. School issues aside, I'm just wondering about things such as food safety, air quality, family friendliness, etc.

I recently read about the heating line in China and that Shanghai is below it, so it can be very cold indoors in the winter, which doesn't sound great. On the other hand, I don't know how much Bangkok will be like Las Vegas with hawkers trying to pitch adult services as we walk down the street.

General thoughts?

Recruiting over break

Hello, I noticed that some of the schools are starting to go on break now. Do you expect to hear responses over break or generally do they not reply again until after break?

Re: No response from Associate?

Thanks, I will just keep checking on it. Does anyone have a work around to view openings in the meantime, short of going to each individual school website?

No response from Associate?

Okay, I used Search Associates for my previous job search, which landed me in my current IS. Now I'm looking for a different position for next year. Everything is updated in my SA profile and I've reached out to my Associate to reactive my account, but I haven't received any response. It's going on a week now. I did receive a contact from someone else in the company that just said it would be forwarded to my Associate, again with no response.

Is this odd? I'm not trying to rush people, but I feel like this is really peak time and delays now could have me missing out on potential opportunities.

I still think I made the right decision at the time. My youngest child was too young for the school B, but was able to attend school A. Now two years later that won't be a factor. This allowed my spouse to work, and not have to stay home, which led to a new career at an English language school and getting some certificates in that area. I think this will help wherever we go in the future.

Reapplying at a school after turning down an offer

Hello! So, two years ago during recruiting season, I was down to two offers that I was seriously considering. I went with offer A for various reasons including family reasons (they had more to offer a trailing spouse and dependents) and a location that was more attractive to me. However, offer B was financially much better and seemed like a great school, etc. I think at the time I handled things professionally with school B, I met with them in person at a fair to tell them I wouldn't accept the offer, they did ask me why, and I explained the family reasons, etc.

Now my two year contract will be ending at school A and I see the position is open at school B. It's a replacing a different person, as best as I can tell, not the person they hired two years ago. I am going to leave school A and I'm not sure about the best route to take with school B. I don't know if I should just email the contacts I spoke with before? Or send in a regular application, per the instructions on the website, but that feels weird.

Any thoughts?

Business studies job market?

Hello, I have a trailing spouse with a bachelor's in business. Said spouse is thinking of getting a teaching degree while we are overseas at my new posting. Looking at the TeacherReady program out of Florida, it looks like a way to a teaching degree but it pretty much gets you certified in the field of your undergrad degree. I'm not sure if there is demand for business studies, or it it would be better to do a complete online masters and pick a different area of certification?

The benefits of the TeacherReady program would be much lower cost and time commitment.

Re: reading books

I just wanted to get more info on the Kindle book topic. I have an iPad and use the Kindle app, registered user in the USA. From online searches I've read that any books that aren't actually downloaded onto my iPad, I might have trouble downloading them once I'm in another country? I saw that they might charge an extra $2 per book and also that the wireless download might not work? I am just wondering if I can continue to log into Amazon.com, buy US books, and download them onto my iPad like normal once I'm abroad. I can't get a clear answer on this from google searches, I keep finding conflicting information.

I will be in a country that has it's own Amazon, I don't know if that makes a difference. I'm sure I will be setting up an Amazon account in the host country to buy retail goods, but would want to continue buying English books from the US site. Also, what would happen if I'm downloading Kindle books from both sites for some reason? I doubt that I would, but I'm just not sure how that would work. I mainly don't want to lose the books I've already purchased!

TIA!

Re: How soon to receive contract after accepting at a fair?

Soooooooooooo, this is an interesting thread. I have received my contract and also heard from the admission office and received paperwork for my dependent to start school. Are you saying this still isn't set? In that case, how can anyone even go into this field if they never know the job will be there until they arrive at the destination? I would have to think that would only happen in a small minority of cases, or why would anyone do this? The risk would be too great. Why should I quit my job, sell my house, etc, if I really have no idea if I have the job?

I did see in the reviews of one of the schools I was talking with, that a teacher traveled to a school and wasn't told until she arrived that she didn't have the job. I believe it had something to do with a work visa issue? I'm not sure, this was just from the reviews. Anyway, at that point, I took that school off my list of consideration. That was the only school I heard anything like that about of the schools I was considering.
