Re: 'Normal' full time teaching load in Secondary

I teach 25/32 class periods. This is over a two-week period (3/4 then 2/4 alternating each day). This means that I have alternating days of 1 period of prep time/2 periods of prep time. Additionally, I have a 25-minute advisory four days a week, a 1-hour well-being class 1 day per week and about 1 hour of supervision duties per week.

There is also Schoolspring.com. This was created in Vermont and mostly has postings for the New England area but occasionally you can find jobs in other places. In fact, in Vermont you are required to use it to apply for a position.

When to announce a departure

I am likely going to be leaving my current school at the end of June 2023 (will be returning home to be closer to family). I teach IBDP chemistry. What is your opinion? Do I let my admin know now that I am likely to depart or do I hold that close to my chest and only announce in November when I'm required to disclose my intentions? Pros and cons please.

Re: Doubling up on Recruitment agencies

One bit I of information I have found out from my Head of School is about why certain schools may choose to recruit with ISS vs Search. Apparently, ISS now charges a flat fee to the school for how ever many candidates a school hires. Search charges for each individual hire. So it is only cost beneficial for a school to use ISS if they plan on hiring several of ISS's candidates. For schools that have low turnover it's more financially beneficial to use Search.

Re: Last straws

For me, it's wasn't the school at all. I loved it. However, I didn't feel like I was getting what I needed out of the city. It's a city of 2 million that lacks a metropolitan center and didn't fulfill me culturally. People are very friendly and yet, due to language barriers, little integration was able to happen. While the people I worked with were great, I needed social and cultural fulfillment beyond the expats that I worked with.

Doubling up on Recruitment agencies

I am in the process of resigning from my current IS and looking at new positions that are becoming available. I am currently registered on ISS-Schrole and GRC. My colleague mentioned that my position has already been posted on Search (not a problem as I indicated that I was likely to leave and my school wants a jump start on applicants if I do resign). My question is, is there enough overlap in the recruitment agencies that I'll see most of the available positions or should I also register with Search? My field is IB chemistry if anyone thinks that matters.

Advice on References

As I prepare for the end of a contract I am getting my references in order. I need to add three new references to the search agency I am using. I have one from my first international position. My issue is this, at my current school neither the head of school or principal has ever observed me in the classroom for more than 5 minutes (I've been at the school almost 3 years now). I know I could get good, accurate references from my IB coordinator and the assistant principal but how does that look not having a more senior administrator write the letter? Do I ask anyway knowing that it will be vague on specifics relating to teaching style? Suggestions?

Ideas for Networking needed

I am an IB chemistry teacher who has committed to teaching at my current school through June 2020. By the time I finish this contract I will have 19 years of teaching experience (4 years IB, 2 years AP, 6 years international, 2 yrs as dept head). My question is this. Knowing that I will begin searching for a new school in October of 2019, what would be an appropriate way to reach out to schools in Europe in advance? I've had my eye on international schools in Vienna and Barcelona. I don't want to be pushy but I also want to get my name and credentials out there in advance.

Re: Accepting/Declining Interviews

If you know that you definitely don't want to work at the offering school I would say that it's appropriate not to waste their time accepting an interview anyway. If you're unsure, then by all means, practice your interview skills because you never know. I have had two offers to interview in regions that I am not interested in this time around. I emailed back immediately, thanking them for their interest but declining their interview request. Both schools emailed me back to thank me for my prompt response. It pays to be up front.

Uruguay

I'm looking for any experience that people have living in Montevideo. Cost of living, quality of life, ease in getting utilities, ease of transportation, etc. I'm reading very different information regarding cost of living and the quality of the local beaches.

Re: Euro Schools - specifics, please?

I just interviewed with one of those schools. Unfortunately, they didn't fully read my dossier where I indicated that I had taken IB training but did not have experience teaching it. Five minutes into the interview it was over because not only did they want someone with experience in IB, they wanted someone with enough experience to be a reader, perhaps with 10 years of IB experience. Otherwise I have 13 years of US teaching experience, as well as 2 years of international teaching experience, with a MS +30 credits. You don't say what position you're looking for so this might not be relevant to you but this was the info I got directly from the school.

IB positions

I'm finding myself in a Catch-22. Many international schools want teachers with IB experience. I have AP experience and have taken the Category 1 training for IB but no experience teaching it. How can I get the experience if I'm not currently teaching in an IB school? If you're an IB teacher (I'm specifically looking at DP science), how did you gain your initial experience? I would love some suggestions on how to put myself in a more favorable position.
