Program Advice

My current IS is growing and I have been slated for the half psychology teacher, half college counselor position. I've been teaching psych for many years, but am interested in moving into college counseling and am excited to be able to combine both positions. My admin is offering PD in case I ever want to move on to a new school. UCLA program or Principal's Training certificate program? Something else? Thanks!

Re: Relocation Companies and Teaching License

We've already accepted positions so no more negotiations, but this is our first international move. Beyond getting rid of tons of our stuff, selling our house, and finishing up at our current jobs, I am worried that I might be forgetting something. Things I have been thinking about:
Banking/Credit Cards - do you have ones from home and one in the new country?
What to take - we will be looking for furnished or part-furnished, but anything you wish you had brought with you?
Suggestions for helping make this a smooth transition for my kids (around kindergarten age)?
Thanks!

Re: Relocation Companies and Teaching License

Thanks!

There's a lot of great information about getting hired on this site, but I'm wondering if there's a list of things to be done between accepting a position and starting the new job - especially geared for first time ITs? I'm going to be keeping track of what I need to take care of for the school, but a list for the general moving process might be helpful, too. If anyone has one, I'd appreciate the information! Thanks

Re: Relocation Companies and Teaching License

Thanks for all the advice! After talking it over with Mr. L we have decided to go the baggage overload route. Thankfully we are living close to the airport we fly into. It looks like there are enough furnished housing options that we won't need too much stuff and minimalism seems the way to go. I hadn't even thought of this and the companies you recommended cost so much more than I expected - draining too much of the relocation budget. I figure if we don't need it for the three months it's shipping we probably can do without it in generally. Simplifying was one of our hopes for relocating - now to convince my young children to get rid of a bunch of toys. Wish me luck! :)

In terms of the license - thanks for the heads up about CA and NJ. We're not opposed to PD and usually have more than we need within just a couple years because we value it. However, our state dept. of education is notoriously inept and increased the costs to renew the license. It seemed more practical to park them some place since we do not plan on returning to our current state, if we return to the States at all.

I really appreciate all the advice and support. This site has been a wonderful help!

Relocation Companies and Teaching License

Looking for some advice about the following topics, please. Thanks so much!

1. Can you recommend an international relocation company? We are moving from the States to Europe and will be looking to do just a small air shipment.

2. We are in a state that requires renewing our teaching license every 5 years. I have heard that there are other states that you can just "park" your license. Recommendations?

Re: Blacklisting

Thanks for the advice everyone. Just to clarify - we withdrew before we were even offered the positions, but the interviews were in late May for two unexpected openings. At the time my kids were not school-age or we would have sent them to the local school system, but instead, we would have needed to pay for two kids in preschool/daycare in a city known for a very high cost of living. We were not being petty about it, just trying to be financially responsible.

Blacklisting

Curious about the concept of blacklisting....what "offenses" can get someone on the list?
What about withdrawing from consideration late in the interview process for a late spring hire because the school didn't have places for your 2 children? Is it worth applying again, several years later?

Election Results

Just curious - do you think there will be much of an impact on the IE field with the election of Donald Trump?

AP vs. IB

My husband and I have been AP teachers for many years, but are interested in the IB DP program as that seems much more common overseas. For those of you that have taught both, can you speak to the difference in day to day teaching and workload for each program. We understand the philosophical differences in approach to education and the general content differences, but I'm curious about the logistics of teaching. Do you prefer one curriculum over another? Thanks!

Air Quality in Asia

Great graphic included in the article for the change in air quality over the last 10 years. I've seen a number of people posting questions about air quality and pollution on this board. Hope someone finds this helpful.

Canada

Without trying to get into a political discussion, the following article appeared in the Washington Post newspaper today:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wor ... ?tid=sm_fb

Basically a small town in Canada that is losing population has advertised to Americans to move there if Donald Trump becomes president. The area looks beautiful and I'd love to go there for a vacation, but it's got me thinking more about Canada....is it possible for a US teacher to move and teach in Canada? There do not seem to be many international schools. Can local Canadian schools hire from abroad? Thanks

Resignation timeline

Newbie question here - it seems like ITs have it kind of tough if they want to leave their current school. They have to notify early and then HOPE that something works out or end up unemployed. What happens if a teacher says they will be returning, then ends up finding another position and resigning after their school's notification date? Is there some international blacklist of sorts? The belief that once a cheater (of the system) always a cheater? Just curious
