Re: Effect of Brexit on WE teaching job market?

Not sure why you don't think Brexit will not be a factor. In the EU a job can only be taken by a none EU citizen if no EU citizen can fill that role. Pre brexit this means that British teachers have the priority over all none EU citizens even if the school may prefer the American candidate. If the EU citizen is qualified for that job they have priority. If brexit changes this then it will level an unlevel playing field.

Re: Effect of Brexit on WE teaching job market?

I think we are a long way away from the final deal that the UK will strike with the EU so its still all guess work at the moment. If the UK decides to commit suicide and go no deal then the teachers from the USA and other none British English speaking countries will at least be on a level playing field with the Brits, possibly in an even better position. If the current British government has a brain between the lot of them they will strike a deal that leaves the UK closely aligned with the EU but the existence of that brain is rather dubious.

Maybe alarmist, maybe not. Most westerners get away with it but not all. Pregnancy is an unpredictable time. Not everyone is considered safe to fly, some can be on bed rest for months. Why go to a country, planning to commit a serious criminal offence and hope to get away with it? There are women in prison right now for having babies while unmarried in the UAE and other countries in the region. Why risk being one of them? There are so many places in the world that have sensible attitudes to sex and relationships I just don't understand why a couple that don't want to be married would chose to go there.

Re: Middle east: Unmarried teaching couples

If you give birth less than 180 days after the date on the marriage certificate then they will not issue a birth certificate for the child and the matter is referred to the court. The UAE does not allow shotgun weddings.

Re: Middle east: Unmarried teaching couples

In the UAE if you turn up to a doctor pregnant and unmarried the doctor has a legal obligation to report you to the police. It is a criminal offence to give birth while not married and women have gone to prison for it. If you have your child outside of the country but are not married you may find that you cannot get a visa for the child. If you are so against being married why do you want to go to a part of the world that views unmarried partners as criminals. Either get married or go elsewhere, it's not worth the risk.

Re: Experiences with teenage children

Alot will depend on how she feels about the move. If she is exited and wants to go it will probably work out fine. If she is reluctant and has already decided to hate it that's a real problem. You are moving with both parents and that's very important to a child so you have that in your favour. Think also about what you will do if she loves it and wants to stay and you want to return?

Re: Hostile Deputy

Ah, bunny boiler is a common term in the UK. It's a reference to Glen Close in Fatal attraction. Seven weeks. Yeah you can do it no problem. You would not be the first person to find themselves in a relationship they knew nothing about. Good luck with the new job.

Re: Hostile Deputy

Basically she had a crush on you which is not uncommon when relationships break up. It deflects emotions elsewhere. There was probably a lot of daydreaming involved. When she realised this was not reciprocated she turned nasty. She is treating you like an ex. You have done nothing wrong and you are right it's totally unprofessional. Bit of a bunny boiler situation where the sex was pure fantasy. I don't have a clue how to advise you except to remain civil and professional.

Re: Single parents

Its a rather unfortunate truth that a single divorced parent must also consider the local culture. We,in the West have a relaxed attitude to such things as single parents but some parts of the world are rather more old fashioned. I have seen some very sad cases where children are excluded by the local contingent in the school for such reasons. The school was very reluctant to tell it's paying customers that their views are wrong and the children were simply being obedient to their fathers by excluding such children. It is important that such teachers choose their schools wisely.

Re: Brexit Implications on EU

Glad you remembered about the Welsh. Westminster is the government of the UK. This includes all four countries. If they trigger article 50 all four will leave. Scotland will not be exempt anymore than London or Liverpool will be exempt. If Scotland does then leave it will be a very long process for them to then rejoin the EU. This process will be heavily hampered by Spain which has its own agenda. What you have hypothesised about is something that will be decades into the future for Scotland if ever and is unlikely for Northern Ireland due to the history of the region.
