Re: China closed

Jesus the ridiculous nonsense of a certain KIA here is unnerving.

Here are the facts.
1. All IT's in China are Z visa holders.
2. Z visa holders are absolutely, unequivocally, not allowed into China right now.
3. It does not matter if the IT is somehow considered "exceptional". That is absolute and utter nonsense blown out someone's butt.

I work very closely with human resources. The parent company of our school is a very valuable and respected organization not even related to education. We work hand-in-hand with immigration authorities and are here, on the ground sifting through the information as it becomes available. If it were possible for an "exceptional" IT to get in, we would know.

To reiterate, the FACT is, not one single IT has or will be allowed into China until the travel ban is lifted. Plain and simple.

Anything else written about this, unless you work for the government in China, is pure conjecture and speculation.

This is a convoluted statement. It can't be both easy to interpret and whatever China wants it to mean.

I nevr claimed "claims of thousands of force majeure
> certificates being issued, in relation to teachers". Just that

Thousands have been issued to BUSINESSES. This is a discussion board for teachers thus pretty much anyone here may assume this applies to teachers, and it does not. In addition,if this language is not specifically in the employment contract then it will not be applied, period.
Many people are in precarious situations right now and giving armchair legal advice is just bad practice.

Re: Racism in China

August will be two years in China. I have already experienced what I would refer to as xenophobia, since the . hit. I understand the fear of the unknown, on the part of average Chinese citizens. They only know what their government tells them and I don't have any reason to believe that the CCP has handed down any directives regarding foreigners and discrimination. There have been a lot of "imported" cases and that scares people.

I've seen the videos and understand that there are African immigrants here who have faced poor, if not bad treatment. I've also read that there are a number of illegals in that area - coming in on one permit, sending it home, and another uses the same permit. It happens in the U.S. quite frequently so stands to reason it could happen here. We also don't know who decided to be jerks to those people. Most likely it is a very small number of ignorant people.

Overall, I am comfortable everywhere I go here. I'm just bummed I can't go away to Sanya for the weekend because many hotels are not accepting foreigners right now, which I understand.

Re: Reopening

Schools in Shanghai are opening in grade-stages. April 27, 2 high school grades return. Other grades will return staggered by grades; upper grades first. We have been told to be prepared to return after May 6 but nothing is confirmed yet. This is direct information from the Shanghai Education Bureau. Kindergartens open last.

When I see how the school has prepared, I'll determine then how comfortable I am going back. Lots of people here are roaming around without masks and it makes me very uncomfortable!

Re: Can I force Majeure?

shadowjack, I agree! It's just unnerving to see certain people here giving legal advice and making claims of thousands of force majeure certificates being issued, in relation to teachers. I understand that you did not make that claim.

Re: Can I force Majeure?

Guys, there is not a single law expert on these boards. A lot of statements being made here are basically headlines someone glanced at, then spewed it out their behind.

RE: China issuing thousands of force majeure certificates:

"China has issued a record number of force majeure certificates in an attempt to exempt local exporters from fulfilling contractual agreements with overseas buyers as the country struggles with the fallout from the coronavirus outbreak."
https://www.ft.com/content/bca84ad8-586 ... 0f971febbc

Chinese law, specifically relating to force majeure, is very difficult to interpret, even for a qualified law professional. One possibility is, if that language isn't specifically in your contract, it's most likely not something to pursue.

There are several groups on WeChat and Facebook for expats that will usually be able to get you in touch with a local attorney. Probably better to get your facts from a law professional, rather than unfounded opinions and conjecture on a discussion board.

There is no such thing as an endorsement/credential in ESOL in California.

This! As we are interviewing for next school year I am so frustrated by people calling themselves teachers who do everything they can to avoid a degree in education, can't give me one good example of a Learning Objective, know little to nothing about pedagogy, developmentally appropriate practice, or classroom management.

Some of us actually chose education as a major. I have more than 1,000 hours student and intern teaching. Through those mentors I learned so much. Skipping around the credentialing process is an insult to real teachers, and you are doing a serious disservice to the children you are "teaching".

No idea what "box" you are talking about. IPC is a very loose curriculum and a school attempting to become certified as implementing the curriculum at the Mastery level requires creating every single lesson, from scratch. I've been on an IPC accreditation team. The work and materials involved are immense.

Re: PYP or IPC in terms of cost to school?

PsyGuy,

What is FWE? What is your personal/professional experience implementing the IPC? With whom did you train?

Having been the person who did the ordering for materials for our units, I believe IPC to be initially, quite costly. Once you have collected lots of books, realia, and other materials the cost goes down, over time.

The work involved in implementing the IPC at the highest level is very work intensive. PYP comes with Scope & Sequence. In the IPC, the S&C is developed as a staff. Objectives, assessments, everything is made by teachers.

Also, IPC requires a separate but integrated math and Language Arts program, which is another added cost.

SCIS is at least 30% locals though they carry either a Hong Kong or Taiwanese passport. I didn't find SCIS (any campus), to have the true international mix I hoped for.

International School of Koje on Geoje Island in Korea offers jobs to people in your situation. It's a nice island and not as remote as Jeju. Might give it a whirl. :)

Re: China Employment Contract - SAFEA

I could do that but I would have to sign the contract saying I will return. I'm trying to be an upstanding sort and not sign a contract I don't intend to fufill. :/ Thus, I'll probably just not get that payment.

Re: China Employment Contract - SAFEA

Thank you for the detailed reply! I found the SAFEA document. I guess that is indeed in place.

I'll defintely stay until the end of the school year. I am due a final paymen in August that I reckon I won't get if I am not actually coming back?
