Re: Teaching and Traveling and Health

She is seeing doctors and a specialist today, (hopefully). She is very Vulcan and will base her decision on their opinions, of course. I was just looking to hear some opinions to compare with my initial reaction.

Teaching and Traveling and Health

Hello all -

About 8 years ago my friend had some blood clots that ended up in her lung. Messy business, really. So they busted them and the doctors said that there was a good chance she was free and clear, and that was a one-off.

This past weekend they returned. They got her on meds and they will be clear soon, just have to pay close attention for a little while. My question is this: She will be working in a place that is around 20 hours away. I know flights (sedentary periods) are a dangerous place for another episode - and she would be taking at least 2 flights a year home, and probably many shorter ones to travel. I know there are compression socks and all kinds of things she could take, but I would like to hear any opinions on whether or not you think it is worth the trouble, and whether it is something you would risk for a job. The idea of being concerned for 6-8 weeks after a flight that a clot has or will slip through is interesting to me, so I would like to hear any points of view you have - being personally close I think my opinion is swayed. Her choices are to keep the job and do what she can to try to prevent these from returning, or find a job that wouldn't require very extended flights and play it a bit safer.

Thanks for your input!

Re: Qatar Foundation Queries

I am going to the ME and my school interviewed over Skype, and it seems to be more common for schools to work that way. A lot of what you are asking is very school-specific, however.

Re: Databases

You can look around here and may be able to find partial lists as some topics.

As far as I know you don't have to have an active profile to be a member - I could search schools while I waited for my references and transcripts on ISS, so I wasn't active while I looked around. Should be good for 2 years as well.

Not sure is Search is any different.

Re: Interview

I don't think it is really either good or bad.

If nothing comes up on Google, post up the name here and see what people have to say. Someone usually knows someone who knows...

Re: Worth pursuing a masters degree?

I have a bit of debt from mine, but it is also because of where I attended school - several factors involved. I knew that going in. There are cheaper and faster options out there if you're just interested in the title and the pay bump. Some you may even be able to complete while you are overseas, although I have not looked into that very much.

The details like shipping and relocation $ etc. are sent by the school. I am sure schools would not want falsify it and end up losing Search or ISS as a recruiting tool, and a teacher would probably alert them immediately if they were lying about their benefits. You can always ask the school as well if you are concerned. As for savings, it is saving potential - you could walk away with more or less. Too many factors to consider.

Re: Resume for newbie teacher?!?

I don't have references on my CV this time, but I usually do. I printed " additional information and references available upon request" on it and attach it as a separate file when I email it in with the CV. I just like to keep documents small and not "busy", complete personal perference.

As for the number I have 3 educational and one personal, I tried to vary them so I have one teacher, one admin, and one board member. Try to keep them as recent as you can. I was lucky to know people that went into each of these fields so I could just grab one from them, as well as some chucklehead friend from NASA who looks good on there.

Educational References are the best, obviously, but any supervisor would be good for a start.

The order of my resume is
- Availability/Personal Information/Photo
- Work Experience
- Education
- Teaching Certifications
- Job related experience
- Job Related Training
- References

Same happened to me earlier in the season! Nothing for months, then right when I was offered a job after the first interview, I got three more offers to speak all of a sudden. Went with the first place and have no regrets. Just weird how the timing works.

And lemon - the tier doesn't make any difference, all that matters is that you are happy and doing what you love to do :)

Re: Had my interview. It didn't go well.

A friend is elementary admin and he is having issues filling spots here in the US so there are jobs out there, just be prepared to take something that isn't ideal for your first posting. I can tell you my first two years were...interesting...for sure.

Sorry the interview wasn't ideal, but every experience is a chance to learn. Keep trying, you'll find something.

Re: Advice

It is late to get a posting for this year, but that in no way means you shouldn't try. It all comes down to what are you willing to put up with for how much money. It is kind of likely you'll end up in some place you never considered, so just keep your wants and needs in mind when you do talk to schools.

Keep sending out applications to places - even the ones that don't top your list. Keep us posted!

Re: Interview question

They would hopefully let you know if you got the job at the same time they would notify you if you didn't. If they aren't professional enough to do that you should be thankful you didn't end up working for them. Don't get too worried - they haven't told you it isn't yours so that means you're still in the running. Good luck!

Re: TESOL Portland a Total Bust

There are positions still open - and a few more will open up when people cancel or switch schools around last minute etc. ISS and Search are good, also check out JoyJobs and actually search around and visit the pages of some schools. They post openings there often in the HR or Staff catagories.

Re: student teaching and the school's reputation

I know I get annoyed when the applications request my student teaching experience. After your first job it really makes no difference anyway.

However, for someone with no teaching experience, this would be something to consider. Whether or not it is "better" than a regular student teaching experience I am not sure. I can't really see it tipping any scales though. But with how competitive it is getting out there every bit helps, I suppose.

If you can get it, go for it. Why not?

Re: 8 Years IB MAth HL and SL No interviews?!

Sounds like the positions are out there so it really is looking to be a resume issue. I would definitely ask your recruiter since somehow there is a fault between who you really are, and who you appear to be on paper.

Hopefully one of these positions pans out and you get the posting you would like.
