Re: Chances for moving to Europe without previous IT experie

Long time lurker and occasional poster...

I will say most of the time PSYguy tends to always disagree with virtually every poster. I am not saying he is not helpful, just always sees EVERYthing different.

Re: Airport baggage allowance

I have never flown with Emirates but after googling I realize what you meant.

I am going to go in a different direction as PSYguy...

Why not chat with your school about this situation? If I was in your position, being a new hire, I would want to make the best first impression possible. I would email them with this query and say that you feel like the price is very high and you would feel bad asking for the refund. They might say it does not matter and to do it anyway or they may say bring a couple of KGs over and that is what you'll be reimbursed with.

Regardless, by opening a line of communication you'll stand a better chance at meshing into the school well.

Re: Airport baggage allowance

Is it possible to purchase an "extra bag" with the airline?

Yeah, that completely changes the context of your original post. Probably would not sweat it.

Re: Applying to schools showing no vacancies?

What you're going to get on here is "what is the worst that could happen" answers. In theory, it is correct. They might see you, be impressed with your resume, know their is a vacancy coming, not really advertise it or interview, interview you, bam new job. However, I feel like this does not happen often and the percentage of this working is probably pretty low.

If anything, they will pool your resume and never hear from them. Unless you have an impressive resume, I doubt you hear anything more than an automated response.

Just my two cents, I am sure a few other posters will say something differing.

Yeah... probably not a good idea sending that info over prior to being offered the job...

Re: USA salary

Some schools (public schools) will allow you elect to receive your salary over a 12 month period. Basically, they split your check up into 12 equal parts and you receive your salary over the course of the year. The school system I just worked for in the USA did this for me.

This is tweets that happened after the fact. You conveyed in your first response that tweets prior to this incident caused this.

Re: SEARCH reference question

I would contact your associate and inform them of this. I would imagine they would "wave" that small portion of the app. IMO you should be fine with your current school's LoR's

What about joining SEARCH as an intern since you don't have the 2 years of experience?

Re: SEARCH administrator references

First bit of advice, I have been in your shoes. I know your concerns about the Search profile app and Letter of Recommendations from admin/personal.

Basically, the confidential reference sheet is a form like email sent to professional/personal referees. It takes a total of 5 min TOPS to complete. It has roughly 15 questions to answer with sufficient/need improvement (or something similar) about your teaching and professionalism. There is maybe 3 boxes at the bottom for written responses if they wish to complete.

Pro tip: When you go to ask your admin for the confidential reference letter, bring your UPDATED resume and a small write up of things you'd like for them to include. Don't just shove it in their face but if the admin legit cannot think of "nice" things to say due to not having a lot of interaction they will be glad to have these hand outs. You have to introduce these in a delicate manner. Once you ask and they say they will be more than glad to complete the reference kind of slide in the well if you want any extra help I have an updated resume with me and also some things these recruiters look for specifically. Have them in your hand at this time. If they want them they will ask for them. If not they will say they are good without them.

Re: Feeling anxious/sad

Any advice from the vets on the emotional roller coaster once you arrive in your new location?

I accepted a job in South Korea. Very excited at this point but still go through the "am I making the right decision" mentality at times. I know I did make the right decision though. Friends, co workers, and some fam always ask "can you speak Korean" "How will you communicate" "Why int he world would you want to go there" "Arent you afriad of N Korea" etc. It does put a slight damper on the excitement but I realize the same people asking these dumb questions have never left the country and some probably the state.
