Re: Admins Out There

Cupis,

It has depended upon the position, but in general we are seeing the same or more applicants than previous years. At this point, we have filled half of our vacancies for 21-22, although we could have a couple more resignations.

We typically get between 20 to 50 applicants for a position.

I actually start with the references and remove anyone with mediocre to negative references. Then I look at experience in similar positions at similar schools. We then move to first round interviews, which are generally short to get a feel for the candidate. If we think the person is viable, they are then put into our process which includes interviews with principal, HOD, and other teacher leaders.

To be honest, years of experience (provided they have more than two years) and certification are less important.

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

Psyguy,

"As I briefly discussed above, you seem to be one of those leadership that thinks your extremely limited HR experience (and recruiters and leadership tend to do HR very badly) allows you so profiler level insight into the quality of an IT."

Wow, you have no idea who I am or my HR background or experience yet you claim to have knowledge about me and how well or not I do the most important thing in my job. It does seem a bit hypocritical don't you think? What training do you have judging people based on their internet comments?

My insights come from twenty years of experience in hiring, additional coursework, and HR workshops. More importantly, my experience comes from seeing how the candidates do as teachers in my school. I have had successful hires from Skype and from face-to-face fairs and I have had unsuccessful hires in both formats, but I have a much higher success rate and the teachers stay longer from face-to-face fairs.

No one forces anyone to attend a fair, either as a candidate or a recruiter. While many have predicted their demise there are more candidates attending fairs than ever before, so it must be working for some of them.

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

Psyguy,

The point is I want to get to know them better before I hire them. I want to know if they are the teachers I want working with our students and be a part of our community. At a fair, I can see them in a variety of settings including interviews, conversations during the day, the reception at night, and spend far more time than one hour. I can get to know them much better than a couple of Skype conversations.

@Nomads

What about getting to know them, when you know they start working for you, because if they arent going to work for you why does getting to know them matter.
Further, how do you get to know them better? Your spending an hour having a conversation either way. You seem to be one of those leadership that BELIEVE they have some finely honed sixth sense of being able to profile ITs and candidates.

Re: Reapplying at a school I previously turned down

I would contact the principal and say just what you said to us. If they were willing to hire you before, they should be equally interested now plus you have more experience.

The one point you will need to address is given your previous concern with salary, how long do you plan to stay? If most of their teachers only stay two or three years due to the salary then it should not be an issue.

Re: Best Job Fair to Land a Tier 1 School

As a recruiter, about half of our hires are by Skype or Zoom and about half are done at fairs. I attend fairs so I can meet teachers face to face. I get to know people better meeting them in person, and I hope they get to know me better, than I ever will via Skype. Most experienced teachers who work at good schools and have strong references get hired by Skype and do not need to attend fairs unless they want to do so.

Re: School social worker looking for an IS position

This year, my school hired an experienced social worker to be our elementary counselor and we are very pleased with her work. It is definitely possible, but the four dependents could be an issue at many schools. I would encourage you to create a file with one of the major placement firms and see what happens. The more flexible you are in terms of location the better your chances will be.

Good luck.

Re: Shanghai IS with Diverse Student Population

Shanghai American - Puxi campus is largely Asian students. The Pudong Campus is a bit more diverse, but still predominantly Asian.

Concordia is probably the most diverse, but does have the religious aspect.

Dulwich College is a British program is probably second most diverse.

Re: Is this really a career anymore? Economists, can you ans

Blinky,

As a recruiter with access to salary information of many other schools, my sense is the established "Tier 1" schools have made modest salary increases over the past few years. There continues to be growth from for profit schools, which is many, but not all, cases offer the lowest salaries they can to increase the profit margin. Competition for students in major cities is increasing, which is moderating the amount the established schools can increase tuition and thereby increase salaries.

Re: Teach Away

I have used them as a recruiter. They are a legitimate company. They connect teachers and schools for Skype interviews although they partnered with ISS this year in two recruiting fairs. Their model to is screen candidates and then refer candidates to schools.

While they have expanded to more traditional international schools, their first big contract was hiring for local schools in the UAE, which provide traditional OH packages. Do your homework and make sure it is the type of school where you would enjoy working.

Re: International v/s Local Hire

Zenteach,

I am proud to be one of the contributors who feels strongly about PsyGuy advocating fraud. As a recruiter, if I find out someone lied to me, including lies of omission, in the interview process they are immediately removed from consideration. It sounds like this is a location that you really want to go. Is it worth the risk by being vague or dodgy with the truth?

Be open, state you are applying as an overseas-hire. I agree your husband's passport status is not relevant in the initial stages of the interviews. If they want to hire you and they have the funds for that position to be OH, they will hire you as an overseas-hire. Sometimes, particularly at the end of the recruiting, some schools may only have funds to bring in someone on a local contract.

Good luck.

Artsmg,

Follow up with the other contacts. You are presuming they are bad, but maybe not. If nothing else you will get different perspectives.

Z,

Take the job. The experience is invaluable and will set you apart. When you go for your next admin position, having had experience will put you ahead of teachers from tier 1and 2 schools who want to break into admin.

Re: Masters Degree That Is Worth Time/Money?

Skybluesky,

I would recommend a Masters if the major is something you are truly interested in pursuing. Schools generally prefer teachers with Masters who can articulate how it has helped them become a better teacher.

In terms of the money, the return on investment is between 5 and 7 years. Most schools give a 10% increase in pay for a masters. If you are making $40,000 to $50,000 base with a bachelors, you could make up $25,000 in about six years and then you are benefitting from the increase for another 15 to 20 years.

Re: Updates from Bangkok

Just came back from Bangkok as a recruiter. There was 560 candidates and 120 schools. The Search folks said this was consistent with the past. Contracts were being offered. Search London is a week earlier this year, some recruiters were going straight to London from Bangkok, which may impact it but I doubt it.

In general, there is not that much overlap from schools that attend Bangkok and London. There were only a couple of European schools in Bangkok and they tend to be the majority in London.

Not sure about number of vacancies in other schools, too focused on mine, but I was pleased with the overall quality and quantity of candidates for the ones I had.

Re: 20 years teaching in Independent school-Search salary pr

Splendid,

It is possible with some schools, but few, if any, of the top schools will exceed their maximum entry step. It would be too controversial with existing staff who came in on that step. The max entry step varies from school to school, from 5 up to 16 or so.
