Re: Coming Clean with the IRS

It is not a waste of money to get an accountant. Typically you only need to file back 3 years, and your return will usually pay for the cost of the accountant. If you have a wife or kids it is even better. You are throwing away 1000 usd a year by not filing!

Re: Selling Out for the Money

Mike, it is not about the total amount of money you have, it is about residual income. What do you have coming in monthly vs expense. You could have 5 million and live too lavish a lifestyle and live beyond your life expectation and be broke. 700k wisely invested and living in an adequate surroundings could very well be enough!

What do you need?

Re: Korea International School

I have a few friends that worked there, and they tell me quite a bit of the old crowd is out, but that it is still a very fun place. I also have a friend who is joining in the Fall, and they are excited. The culture at KIS is that everyone works very hard and plays hard, is well resourced and it is a fun place to work. I have heard various reports about the head, but that will not normally affect the daily workings of a teachers life. I would look forward to it with a huge smile, it will be fun, and look great on your resume!

Good luck

Re: ISS & Search - worth it?

For me, and from what I saw specifically in Bangkok... Here are the differences. ISS seemed to suck from the get go, I had been to a search fair before, and though, whoooa, why do we have this tiny room, and the schools have this vast (usually) empty hall. But then I settled in and reforcused on the task at hand. What I saw were there were less BIG schools from China and Europe, but there were still very good schools at ISS, and there were a lot of people with job offers. I had several. I didn't accept any because I was going to Search. Search is a meat market, and they are only selecting the choicest pieces. If you have a trailing spouse and a kid, you better be amazing. The quality of jobs at Search was better, but depending on your personal reality, the ISS fair might be better for you. I ended up taking one of the ISS offers in the end, but met some great HOS's from European schools who seemed to love me, but in the end were going to London, and would probably not want to pull some baggage out of Asia with the money they offer.

So really, evaluate yourself, know your strengths, and weaknesses, be honest with yourself, and put your energy into what fits you the best!

Good luck

Re: American Embassy School India any recent info?

Have been there, and know several folks working there. The experience is as good as it gets in India. The drawback is that in most cases you have to be American, which has had some immigration like issues with India, and the school being so prominent receives the brunt of the difficulties. I would never want to go back to India, but I would go to the Embassy school!

Re: United Nations International School New York

Definitely a top notch school. My friend there claims to have golden handcuffs. You are compensated well, but NYC is expensive!!! Many, many, many people there have been there a very long time, and that can be stifling. I didn't care much for my interviewer, he was just odd. Very tech oriented school, go to their website and see what they are doing!

Good luck

Re: Criminal Record Check for China (from Egypt)

Surprised they did not offer an English option. China offers this when you get you bgc from them. Anyway, they would require it to be in English, so you better go the extra step and send both the original and the certified English copy.

Re: International Schools retirement plans thoughts?

Buy land, build cheap condos, become a slum lord.... Or something a little more classy. But really, retirement is all about residual income. Do you have a place to live? Can you buy food? Can you pay all the bills that come your way? You can? Well then you can retire!!! How you get there, well safe investments with brokers etc., is one way, but land is my way!!!

I have done it, it is stressful. Tons of interviews in Bangkok, but you can increase your selection. Both offer different things. It was worth it in the end.

Re: Experienced teacher, Married to non-teaching spouse with

I definitely felt this at recruiting fairs this past year when a great interview turns into nothing... At all. I was still able to score a well paying position with my non teaching wife and child. It does not hurt being able to teach IBDP science, in fact that is my saving grace (and being incredibly handsome... That never hurts HAHAHAHA). Your recruiter and mine might be the same, as their notes are equally articulate and honest. I say good luck, keep plugging away!

Re: breaking out of "tier 3" - advice?

There are a lot of smaller IS's in China that are highering even at the beginning of the school year. Many of them are ok, and very good to get into the next phase of your teaching careers. Albeit I personally greatly disliked my experience at Beanstalk In Beijing, they have a new director who is quite famous for turning things around, and friends in the elementary have expressed high praise. There are quite a few schools of similar caliber with similar employment practices. Look on the pay portion of this site, and then go to school sites, look on joyjobs (which at this point would be my starting point), tieonline post similar (and both of these are cheap). I went for a training in Beijing and walked away with 2 job offers, China is a mecca right now. Otherwise stick it out for another year and make the investment in going to Bangkok in January. I recommend ISS for your experience level, if you have an open mind you will find a great position next January.

Good luck.

Bog, I am still going with my blueairs. My kids health is not worth strapping a filter to a fan for 30 bucks.

Re: Cost of running air purifiers in Beijing

I am Bog, I have already purchased mine from friends who are leaving Beijing. I happened to get a great deal. But there are definitely expat sites in Shanghai and Beijing to help locate units. Electricity is not expensive, you need the purifiers!!! You health is definitely worth keeping those things running!

Enjoy Shanghai, I will be visiting friends there next school year.
